Tell me about Nailsea….

Twoshoesnewshoes · 09/04/2025 19:36

DD has potentially been priced out of her choice of areas of Bristol - eg Brislington, St Anne’s type.
she doesn’t want to buy in eg Easton or Hartcliffe type areas as she will be living alone and wants a safe community.
some affordable (just) places in Nailsea - is it rough or a good alternative?
thanks!

What about southville? Is that any cheaper.
Sorry I don't know nailsea.

Rellotello · 09/04/2025 20:33

Southville is definitely more expensive than St Anne’s/Brislington. What is her budget and what is she looking for? Nailsea is fine but there’s not much to attract a younger person, mostly older people and families. It’s also not the easiest for transport if she enjoys the social life of central Bristol.

Agree Hartcliffe should be a big no but there are plenty of fair, affordable areas nearish Easton.

ediepop · 09/04/2025 20:44

We bought in Brislington/St Anne's a decade ago because we'd been priced out of Southville.

I don't know much about Nailsea - but it is a bit far out for having a social life. I wonder if Fishponds might suit her? But if you tell us her budget and whether she's after a flat/house/how many bedrooms, we might be able to help. I'm a total Rightmove BS4 (and beyond) property addict as DH and I keep pondering a move.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 09/04/2025 23:25

Thanks everyone
budget absolute maximum £210k
two beds
ground floor and communal garden would be amazing but of course not essential (she would like a cat)

How old is DD? My parents live nearby. They’re in their 80s. Their friends have moved to Nailsea to be closer to the shops… It’s safe, and dull for a young person.

Crisplet · 09/04/2025 23:34

Nailsea is honestly awful. Not for young people. The centre is dull and run down. The only reason would ever consider is if my DC were in dire need of a secondary school place!

St George - BS5
Fishponds
Old Market
St Pauls
Stapleton
Bedminster - BS3

Southville is extortionate

Twoshoesnewshoes · 09/04/2025 23:52

DD is late 20s
wants to be close (ish) to the centre but appreciates she may have to go further out
thanks everyone, really helpful
she can’t afford bedminster
says St George is rough?
what is shirehampton like, and Hanham?

Hanham is lovely, very safe, easy to get into town on the bus and close to greenery.

ive lived in St George. It’s fine safety wise, the park is gorgeous and there’s shops and restaurants on Church Road. Church Road is a bit rougher….but that’s actually Redfield.

Someone suggested Old Market. I’ve lived there too and I would strongly suggest avoiding it! It is not a safe place for a single woman after dark! Avoid!

If safety is important then personally I would also avoid St Paul’s. It’s much better than it used to be but, but not great for a single young woman.

For 210k she might want to consider parts of Whitchurch or Stockwood in the South, although they might be a bit too quiet….or the Bristol bits of South Glos (Kingswood, Staple Hill and that kind of area

Crete001 · 10/04/2025 05:25

Look at Yatton.....much better than Nailsea

kirinm · 10/04/2025 07:43

St George wasn’t particularly rough when I lived there about 15 years ago. I’m sure it’ll have improved rather than got worse. And it’s an easy walk into town.

Nextdoor55 · 10/04/2025 07:47

Keynsham? Is that affordable?

Rellotello · 10/04/2025 07:48

Twoshoesnewshoes · 09/04/2025 23:58

Anyone know This area?

Fishponds is fine generally, a decent high street, cafes/pubs and good transport into town but I would always be wary of blocks like this. It doesn’t look very well looked after and she is relying on lots of occupiers being decent people to ensure she feels safe.

Does she NEED 2 beds? Could she get a sofa bed in the living room for people to stay on? This would open up many nicer options. Having just helped a friend look for a flat with a similar budget she was priced out of 2 beds and ended up buying a 1 bed new build in a converted building in Fishponds.

heldinadream · 10/04/2025 08:12

This is top of her budget @Twoshoesnewshoes but it's got it's own tiny garden, paved but she could get some of that taken up and a bit of turf down to keep the cat happy.
This area- lovely, buses to town and not that far, couple of green spaces nearby and only a stone's throw from the 'hub' of south Bristol around North and East streets. North Street has the Tobacco Factory theatre loads of good cheap places to eat and arty type places and a deli etc.
I'm more familiar with North Street than the area this flat is in - Bishopsworth/Headley Park - but we are literally in the process of moving to Headley Park ourselves. My daughter lives near Parsons Street Station and we've been looking for over a year and she's been helping, and she really rates this area.
There are a couple more but this looked like the best one. Her own garden!

Whichhousetochoose · 10/04/2025 08:13

I’ve lived in Nailsea and thought it was lovely, it is a generally expensive place but still relatively close to bristol! Still pop back there a few times a month as DH family live there (lived with them to save for a deposit)

ediepop · 10/04/2025 08:42

I'm also wondering if it absolutely has to be 2 beds. For her budget, there really isn't much in Bristol. I searched Rightmove with her parameters and Bristol as the location and everything is mostly in rather dull or not very nice areas further out and the flats tend be cramped and badly laid out. If she goes for a one bed, much more opens up.
At her age, DH and I had a gorgeous one bed in Cotham. We loved that flat and the location was brilliant, very safe area, loads of bars and restaurants and things to do. I'd say a great location in your 20s is more important than a second bedroom.

This is a lovely flat, or it could be if the owner had tidied up a bit, with it's own scrap of garden. It's in Totterdown, which is a great area, (DH and I also had a house here, once a upon a time). It's on a quiet road, but near to lots of buzziness and also great transport links into the centre, although actually, you can walk or bike into the centre very easily from Totterdown. It's also very near to Victoria Park and Arnos Vale, two gorgeous and big green spaces.

Rellotello · 10/04/2025 09:27

Agree with the poster above. If she could compromise on a 1 bed I’d be looking around Glos Rd, maybe even Henleaze and Westbury on Trym (the odd flat might pop up) or Totterdown. This would be my current pick https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/160172225#/?channel=RES_BUY

Ah I spotted that one too! Gorgeous. I had a friend who had a flat in that row in our 20s and honestly the location could not be beaten. Yes, ok it's on Cheltenham road, which is very busy, but you will never be lacking things to do.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 10/04/2025 15:02

Thanks all!
yes she needs a two bed as she won’t be able to cover the mortgage and bills on her own, also would rather not live alone.

OP - There's this flat available on Sandy Park Road in Brislington.

And also this flat on Allison Road that needs a bit of work but comes with it's own separate garage.

I know Nailsea well and would disregard a lot of the negativity on this thread! It’s definitely safe for living on your own/ having a young family- the odd bit of anti social behaviour but nothing compared to a lot of areas. If she stays and settles there is a lot to do for children. You are on a direct bus route and train route into Bristol so you are hardly miles away. The town centre could be slightly prettier but there are a lot of nice places to eat, have a drink and not worry about walking home. Good amenities with supermarkets, fruit and veg shop etc. No banks anymore but that seems to be true of many places. Easy to access the waterfront at Clevedon and Portishead. Someone suggested Yatton over Nailsea- def cheaper but there are less
Facilities and location isn’t as convenient. I know of 3 people that have moved there as it’s cheaper than Nailsea, regretted it and are struggling to afford to move back.

pinkdelight · 10/04/2025 17:38

Our first flat was a two-bed in a block very much like the one OP posted and it was fab for a first-time buyer. I wouldn't assume that other people in the block will necessarily be a problem. Everyone minded their own business where I was and the communal areas were looked after by management co/service charge. Loads of people live in such blocks without any bother and she'd hopefully get a feel for the place when she viewed and how quiet or not the general vibe is. It also looks like she could add a bit of value over time by doing it up a bit, but that it's also perfectly liveable as is. Can't comment on the area specifically, but as a first time buyer with a tight-ish budget, I think it's wise to go for a purpose built block rather than compromising on space/no of rooms to get a period property/conversion flat. The extra bedroom will make a big difference day to day.

There’s a well nice pizza place in Nailsea. 🤣
