How to dress these windows?

I'm a complete novice and don't know what to do .
I've had curtain poles put up but I'm now unsure that this is under way to go .
As below 2 windows are close together but with narrow space between them and on one side.
The third window is flush against the wall on one side.
I'm aiming for unfussy and plain.
Roller blinds?

Shutters.

If you can afford to splash out a bit Roman blinds with an electric remote control you would be able to open up/put down quickly with no need for all the chords. Assuming you want the windows/view completely open.

If you want to screen the windows venetian blinds you can angle- then perhaps still curtains for night time cosiness?

Thank you both for posting !
I'm one of those annoying people who doesnt know what they want but is pretty much sure about what they don't want.

I think shutters block the light too much for my taste , and feel the same about Venetian blinds. I'm not sure about Roman blinds , though think that might be an option .

If you look up perfect fit blinds on blinds2go they have clips into the windows and the Venetian ones you can pull up so they let all the light in that you want. You have to be careful about the window opening that the frame doesn't get in the way though. The perfect fit shutters have space built in for window opening but you can only open and close the slats I think

Loveautumnhatewinter · 03/04/2025 10:04

Totally understand the light issue with shutter/blinds options. Personally then, I would keep it simple and go for a neutral roller blind. I don’t think the windows could could cope with the drama of Roman/venetian blinds - it would look too fussy and too much for the room.

Do you know I'd forgotten that Venetian blinds do this!

Shutters only block the light while the slats are closed! You can open them!

Nice room! I would go with floor length curtains because I just think they make a room cosier and prettier.

parietal · 03/04/2025 14:14

Floor length curtains on all. I’d get some basic ikea ones to try out and then upgrade when you’ve had time to think.

Roller blinds are too utilitarian and "kitcheny" for that room. Roman blinds in a plain fabric would be simple and elegant and suit the room more. I'm sick of seeing Venetian blinds everywhere, they aren't elegant, they're fussy and are dust magnets.

JaninaDuszejko · 03/04/2025 14:19

If you want unfussy and plain then get cheap roller blinds. You can get 'bottom up' roller blinds so you have privacy but still have light coming in at the top.

You could then add curtains later if you want a softer look. But I'd say have one curtain rail over the pair of windows and extend the rail out by about 15-30cm at each side so you can pull the curtains completely back (for the single window you could get away with one curtain).

Meant to say, I agree, I'd go with roman blinds in a beautiful fabric. You can get them interlined to make the room warmer as well.

Buy bottom up blinds then adding curtains later is also a good option.

We are currently going through this after a renovation. SO many choices.

Is that room a bedroom? Do you want blackout? Is it overlooked? How often will the window coverings actually be totally closed? Will they be just slightly pulled down most of the time? These are some questions to ask and will help guide what you actually need.

I was looking at shutters, I like the look, but also don't like that you need to pull the whole thing off the window- to have the window completely clear. Yes, you can open/close the slats, but I'd prefer a clear view.

Rina66 · 03/04/2025 14:42

I think Roman blinds on the outside of the window with black out roller blinds in the recess, so at night you just bring down the roller blinds, the romans can then always stay up and the window looks dressed. The roller blind mechanisms will be hidden by the romans.

LollyWillow · 03/04/2025 14:57

This is a difficult one. I do think that roller blinds would be a bit too clinical. Roman blinds would work OK if you went for a fairly plain fabric and the top of the blind was on,or close to, the ceiling so that you weren't blocking too much light.

Personally, I would go for curtains but run the curtain rail across the whole width of the wall. You would need curtains made of fairly lightweight fabric (although still lined) so that there wasn't too much bulk when they were open. I would have a button/hook to hold back the curtains at either end so that not too much light is lost during the day. At night you would effectively have a curtain that covered the whole wall, which would be lovely.

Saltedcarameltiramisucheesecake · 03/04/2025 15:02

We've got windows like that in our bedroom and have fitted cartridge blinds which are great for blackout and definitely help keep the heat in in winter and cool in the summer.

pleasepackitin · 03/04/2025 15:16

I think some nice floor length voils and a simple roman blind !

Bluevelvetsofa · 03/04/2025 15:32

Roman or day and night blinds.

Why would you want your romans to always stay up and pull down the cheaper roller blinds? That makes no sense. Better to get roman blinds with blackout lining so you can have blinds that are both beautiful and practical.

sharkanado · 03/04/2025 15:40

shutters are made for these

sharkanado · 03/04/2025 15:41

The benefit of a shutter is you can close the bottom tier but keep the slats open and completely open the top tier so you get light & privacy.

Defiantly41 · 03/04/2025 16:02

Here are my Roman blinds, fitted inside the recess with motorised headers so very clean looking. They have blackout lining and fit exactly into the recess.
