If you were putting a new kitchen in a bungalow to sell...

...what colour would you put in?

Please don't say don't bother - the bungalow has no kitchen right now.

I'm thinking (shiny) white. The rest of the decor is sage/cream/touches of red due to a carpet I have no control over! Am fully aware (my late dad's house) is a doer upper - posted a while ago, got some great advice and will be posting "after" pics soon.

3 bed bungalow, SE coast, we've de-olded it a bit and improved the kerb appeal.

I know in a couple of years people may very well re-model but for now we want it to be clean and nice. Wasn't selling in the state it was. I imagine an older couple would be able to live in it without modelling now so want a kitchen to suit. No integrated stuff involved (apart from oven) just space and plumbing etc.

Thank you - thinking Howdens cheapish white gloss but all ideas will be gratefully received!

Another vote for ikea

MyrtleLion · 28/03/2025 20:53

We had satin white for the wood, skirting boards, frames and doors etc.
Then pale lemon yellow for the kitchen and bathrooms with white gloss cupboard doors and long chrome handles.
It's lush.

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 28/03/2025 20:53

DIY Kitchens is my vote

Shufflebumnessie · 28/03/2025 20:54

I'm sorry for your loss Flowers.
I'd go for white but not shaker style. I'd choose completely smooth, flat doors - no panels/grooves etc (I thoroughly dislike them as they're just an additional ledge to clean!!).

Simrin · 28/03/2025 20:57

Yes agree, cream and not shiny.

In our old house, we had an Ikea kitchen (cream Shaker style, funnily enough) put in and it was way cheaper and better quality than other options. This was about 10-15 years ago and Ikea gave us details of our local "approved fitter" who came and installed it for us.

Since then the house has sold twice and had a lot of work done to it (new bathroom etc). I can see from the Zoopla photos that nobody has wanted to change the kitchen, though! Very nice kitchen; I still miss it!

Howdens do a nice cream shaker kitchen. Would look lovely with sage green walls.

Mumwithbaggage · 28/03/2025 21:03

Ikea trip on Monday after work then :)

B&Q do a cream shaker kitchen - might be easier if you need to go and pick it up. We put one in to sell a house 18 years ago. The house has been sold twice since then and it's still going strong.

CatchHimDerry · 28/03/2025 21:04

I hear good things about DIY kitchens

i work for a big well known company, shaker is very much still fashionable and neutral colours are best for resale

I I had Ikea for my utility room and quality was poor so I won’t recommend

I’ve worked for Howdens, they’re fine on a budget / for selling

My own kitchen is from there (builder special) and is falling apart 3 years in but that’s mostly incompetent fitting. I wouldn’t buy from there for myself though

Longhotsummers · 28/03/2025 21:04

DIY kitchens. I’ve recently put in two white gloss kitchens in older properties and they look great - clean lines and they really open the space up.

vandelle · 28/03/2025 21:05

I like shaker style a lot, the simple clean lines appeal to me, ledges or not! I wish I had one myself..... I don't think they'll ever date that much either.

martinisforeveryone · 28/03/2025 21:05

Absolutely no to any gloss shiny finish and no to white. Can you use the existing layout and carcass/frames and just fit new doors and worktops?

This is not a recommendation it's just the first search result

Posted this before read @Simrin's post 😄 at checking previous house sales. We've had an IKEA kitchen for 14 years, would get again.

Mumwithbaggage · 28/03/2025 20:46

Do Ikea cabinets come ready made?

No.

fluffbreeder · 28/03/2025 21:24

Yes white if cream but Matt, so the buyer can paint easily and shaker style warmer.

Haha, every now and then I like to google previous properties we've owned and see what the subsequent owners have done with the place (and how much it's selling for now... which is a bit more depressing!)

Latest sellers did good stuff to bathrooms and conservatory, but weren't so great on colour schemes and window styles. I look forward to having another look in 10 years to see what's been done next!

Mumwithbaggage · 29/03/2025 01:03

@martinisforeveryone it was way way beyond that so has been ripped out. Believe me, that would have been easier!!

It'll all be fine in the end. Or so I keep telling myself...

I'd go with the B&Q Caraway units and grey shiny doors with a light white with flecks of grey worktop. It's cheap, seems pretty strong and made up very easily. They do matching grey plinths, side panels and you can get handles that will go well with it. Sometimes they have a 40 percent off offer if you buy more than 4 or 5 units. I got this for a btl house and tenants really liked it. I gave them a choice of 3. That's the one they picked.

Cream shaker and a very hardy, timeless bench top, double sink.

My parents had a kitchen from Howdens 10 yrs ago and it’s still absolutely perfect condition and my DM is not the most house proud or the most likely person to look after it. I definitely think the fitting has something to do with that .
Their own brand of appliances on the other hand weren’t great .

OP cream shaker would get my vote.

TimeForATerf · 29/03/2025 05:10

Also cream shaker. Paint the walls sage green. Not the other way round. We did this in DDs first house, her kitchen is lovely.

QuartzIlikeit · 29/03/2025 05:29

I absolutely hate shaker style kitchens. They are incredibly dated and a magnet for dirt during to all the ledges in them. Go for completely smooth doors, handleless would be my preference but they tend to be more expensive.

Howdens kitchens are more easily fitted than ikea as they come pre built.

Bjorkdidit · 29/03/2025 06:35

No but they're very easy to build. I did most of ours while DP and his kitchen fitter mate did the installation.

I also agree with IKEA for good quality on a budget. If you're fitting it yourselves. Howden is a non starter anyway as they only supply to trade accounts.

If the kitchen isn't huge, I'd do a reasonably proper job of it as you can't assume the buyers will just rip it out in a couple of years. A well laid out kitchen in a neutral colour will mean one less thing to worry about while the buyers concentrate on the rest of the property.

Twiglets1 · 29/03/2025 07:22

Agree with cream shaker - will look good and no buyer will hate it whereas white gloss is more risky.

TubeScreamer · 29/03/2025 07:24

Cream shaker or navy shaker

white gloss will put people off
