Bathroom layout help

Hi we're fortunate to have recently moved into a house with a large ensuite bathroom.
It is currently dominated by a large walk in shower.

I'm more of a bath person. So I want to add a bath but hubby will still want to shower.

Which layout would you go with.

A. Bath with shower over. Would mean toilet not right opposite when you open the door and less cleaning.

B. separate shower cubicle. Bathroom would feel smaller but I'd fell less crammed in when bathing and wouldn't have to deal with hubby's shower stuff.

I'll add pics of how it currently is and options A and B. Ignore decor and colours as the bathroom planner has limited options.

I'd go for option 2. Our bathroom is similar, but the toilet is next to the shower where you've got the radiator shown. That would solve the issue of the toilet being opposite the door. Our towel rad is on the wall above the bath, so where it's shown on your option 1 picture. It's compact, but the only way we could get a separate shower in.

Songbird54321 · 02/03/2025 20:25

I'd also go for option 2. I personally wouldn't get a curved shower though if you want ease first cleaning. It's far easier to clean our straight shower door than the curved one we had in rented (I use a karcher). Seems insignificant until you have to do it week in week out.
If you're a karcher-less/squeegee-less household then ignore me though 😊

B, separate shower to bathtub. If I had the space I would go for that one for sure ..

DisplayPurposesOnly · 02/03/2025 22:10

B but move shower to top RH corner, basin to right wall and radiator to anywhere it fits.

Moving the loo will be expensive.

parietal · 02/03/2025 22:44

Separate shower and not a tiny one with a curved off corner.

Can you cope with a small bath (150cm) rather than than big (170cm)?

Chillibilli · 02/03/2025 23:30

Thanks for the input so far. This layout does seem more practical but it doesn't look as aesthetically pleasing.

Yup I do have karcher window vac and squeegee for our main bathroom shower.

Guess I might have to choose function over form and also take costs into account.

Bath on the left will mean the door needs moving over a tad. Not a major issue as the pocket door is knackered and needs ripping out anyway.

I think this design looks really nice. It’s handy to have the towel rail next to the shower when you get out. You’ve got plenty of room to make the shower a good size here.

Have you got enough places to put things? Those wall mounted vanity units have quite shallow internal drawers. Where would you keep loo roll, towels etc?

I'm quite liking this but wondering if the loo seat would get wet?

No worries on storage, the ensuite comes off a big dressing room with lots of storage. It's also a bungalow with the utility not too far away.

I'll also have a mirror cupboard for toothbrushes etc and there will be a niche above the bath for prettier stuff

Who are you using to design the bathroom?

Totally would get wet, there’d be water all over the floor the whole time. Suggest you go and have a look at some shower cubicles and find a nice one - they don’t need to look bad!

minipie · 03/03/2025 00:36

Alternative option, not sure if this fits

Loo under window but with its back to the side wall not the back wall

Shower in front of loo - so along the left wall

Bath along rh wall

Sink in the middle facing the door

Towel rail on the wall at one end of the bath

AllLopsided · 03/03/2025 01:11

I wouldn't recommend the towel rail above the loo scenario in your most recent post. I have one like this (tiny bathroom, nowhere else to put it) and it's a pain having to reach over the loo to hang the towel up. And I only ever have one bath towel on there!

I'd go for the design in your post at 23:30. I don't see a convenient place for a toilet roll holder though.

1.8 x 2.6m

Mine is almost identical dimensions, and I'm struggling with the same issues.

Feels like the room really should be big enough for both, but layouts seem cramped.
Also don't want the loo opposite the entrance.
Plus largish window & soil stack prevents shower on window wall.

I've attached some layouts in case any are helpful.

Variations on this I discounted as having too little space between shower and bath.

Separate shower!
At a quick glance, your 23:30 layout.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 03/03/2025 07:48

Your 23.30 layout is good but move the towel rail to the front wall (the invisible one). You can have a bigger shower enclosure then (I have a 1000mm quadrant, feels roomy to me).

Definitely no to towel rail above loo and to open shower, as PPs have said.

minipie · 03/03/2025 07:55

Chasingsquirrels’s last layout, with the dark floor, is what I was suggesting. Though I’d probably go for a quadrant shower with a curved edge to make it feel nicer walking in. Or a longer narrower shower rather than square.

That one is my preference as well, but in mine the soil stack is on the opposite wall, so it would be far more work in my room.

Other overviews of the same basic layout.... (I've spent too much time overthinking this!).

I'd recommend a corner toilet. It gives you more room in front so you don't feel hemmed in by the sink or shower in front of you when you sit down.

I have the same layout as your last option but with a corner toilet and an even smaller bathroom.

january1244 · 03/03/2025 09:52

@Chasingsquirrels is is possible to do something like this with the bath and shower in one wet area?

You can tank the area, get a shower tray that can be tiled, get a narrow bath of under 700mm width, and then because you have elbow room above the bath, the walk in shower can be narrower (say 650mm width)

january1244 · 03/03/2025 09:56

Sorry it won't let me attach the picture. But basically a bath against the wall, a wall mounted or rain head shower right next to it with a drain, and then a shower screen protecting the rest of the bathroom. The heated towel rail can go in the shower on the back wall opposite the shower head - this has the bonus of making the open shower area warm and cosy and our towels have never got wet

Yes in your house with the soil stack in that corner, and the window in the middle, I’d swap it round so bath is on the left as you come in and shower and loo on the right. The loo cistern can be boxed in next to the soil stack boxing in and you can have a cupboard above the cistern, will hide the stack nicely.
This may involve moving the door over though…
