Planning permission to include 3 traveller pitches…

MrsALS · 02/03/2025 18:29

If you were living close by (circa 0.5 miles) to a new build development that included 3 permanent traveller pitches would you be worried?
Local planning has just been approved.
On one hand 0.5 miles isn’t on our doorstep, 3 pitches isn’t huge, and I’m guessing a permanent site as part of a wider new development is better than a temporary, illegal site. But on the other hand I can’t help but be nervous, particularly the impact on resale value.
Can I have opinions please?

No way would I purchase so near to a traveller site. It may badly devalue your property depending on how things go.

You think half a mile is very close? Are you sure you don’t live that close to a small site because I can thin’ of quite a few in my area.

Erm, yes.

Not sure what you're trying to tell me that I don't already know ?

Oh sorry, not intended as rude . Just agreeing, that there are different ethnic and cultural groups of travelling people.

Why is Mumsnet allowing a thread full of people to be so openly racist? It's disgusting.

PicturePlace · 04/03/2025 06:28

@OhHellolittleone I’m actually horrified that MY post was deleted and not this thread. Genuinely shocked.

Completely agree. This post and the responses make for grim reading. Of course it is wildly racist to assume Travellers will be problematic. Imagine of this post was about any other race. Really, really grim snd disappointing.

PicturePlace · 04/03/2025 06:30

For children to grow up and be told they are from a ‘bad’ community that would affect house prices is WRONG. For people to feel so unwelcome is WRONG. Just as it would be wrong for black children to think they would grow up to join a gang etc etc. we need to stop this narrative. Mumsnet need to stamp it out. It is not ok for this to be an acceptable discussion.

Hear, hear

What's most frustrating is that people only notice the bad. Why would you even notice normal people living normal lives? They probably encounter hundreds of gypsies and travellers but don't even know it. Then they have one bad experience and make their mind up about the whole lot.

I've had plenty of bad experiences with people from a variety of backgrounds, but I've never used that single interaction to decide that the entire race were like that.

New Age or Van dwellers definitely aren’t “ Travellers “ but people who can’t afford to live in, or who don’t want to live in a house or flat.

Fine with van dwellers as long as they are parked at an approved site with toilets & showers. Their vehicle registered & insured. Their trash in bins.

They should not be urinating or pooping outside. They should be following the basic hygiene & rubbish disposal rules.

1apenny2apenny · 04/03/2025 12:17

I no wouldn't buy from you and I suspect the new development will be a hard sell, can't believe the developer will be pleased about this.

For those shouting 'racism', no just based on experience. Why take the risk!

Is not racism, it’s personal experience. When you’ve lived near travellers and seen them repeatedly shoplift, walk away from restaurants without paying, fly tipping and laughing in the face of shop staff as they try to ask them to pay, then you’ll see why no one wants to live near them.

TheOneWithTheWedding · 04/03/2025 17:22

We used to live near one and it was awful. I would avoid

AceofPentacles · 04/03/2025 18:26

It is racist, as other people have pointed out, to say that a whole ethnicity of people are 'bad' based on your personal experience.

I work with a traveller family, who have been told to fuck off daily for most of their lives, subjected to racist slurs (somehow people think this is acceptable?) been afforded no opportunities (eg jobs) due to their heritage and culture, and as a result don't trust anyone and have pretty low self esteem. How is this thread still standing .

What a disgraceful post.

We are people, not fucking animals.

Jessicapancake · 04/03/2025 19:43

It would put me off. I'd look elsewhere.

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 05/03/2025 08:40

The racism in here is, sadly, not unexpected but very disheartening. No other ethnic group is spoken of this way.

In addition, there is anti social behaviour from all sections of society at times. Several of my middle class, well off friends openly admit to various types of fraud but somehow that is seen as "acceptable" whereas shoplifting is not.

Some people on this thread ought to be ashamed of themselves.

Bryonyberries · 05/03/2025 08:42

We have a fixed traveller site close to my house. I’d lived here a few years before I even knew it existed! I’ve cared for their children at the local nursery and they are all lovely people, so personally I wouldn’t have any issues with it based on my experiences.

Cashncarry · 05/03/2025 09:10

This thread illustrates why racism against travellers is one of the last acceptable forms of racism. The fact that the OP is from an ethnic minority makes it worse not better. When my parents came to this country, they had to put up with signs saying “No Blacks, no Indians” and this is no different. Some of these comments are horrifically racist and part of the reason I rarely post on Mumsnet these days.

TheMorels · 05/03/2025 09:26

I think it will impact on the appeal of the new build properties, but not on a property half a mile away.

camperjam · 05/03/2025 22:37

I live near one and wouldn't choose to again

ClearFruit · 05/03/2025 22:40

Fuck me, no. Bright red flag. No, no, no. I have personal experience of being in close proximity. No.

Get off the fence and tell us what you really think 🤣🤣

Yogre · 05/03/2025 22:50

From personal experience, no I would not buy your house. Additionally, if I were you, I'd move, the house value will be affected.

Our family and community suffered terrible racist abuse and violence from some local travellers. Actual racist abuse, not just them not wanting to live near us. The general crime shot up too. It was bad enough that I'd now never take the risk.

I don't care if people think it's racist, if you've experienced something enough times, you'd be an idiot to not consider it happening again in the same circumstances.
