Large trees in garden

I am buying a house but when I didn't go in the garden on my first viewing. I requested a second viewing and was chocked by what I saw.

There is a very large tree at the bottom and two large conifer trees as you can see in the images. I thought the big tree was outside the property but it turned out it's inside.

How much do you think it could cost to remove the trees?

Also, does the shed's roof look like those ones with asbestos?

Thank you.

I stand on the side of the trees (and have similar wonderful ones in my garden or next door). I am hoping my fears that the new neighbours will pull all theirs down do not come to pass - they have already removed one with Council consent from the front.

He still doesn't get it. I think he just has very little theory of mind (I suspect neurodivergence, but as he's now in his 80s, it's not something anyone is going to pursue) and literally can't see that there are priorities other than 'tidy' and 'low-maintenance'. He once decided, while my mother was out and he was mowing the grass, that a mature border at the front of their house 'looked untidy', and cut flowering roses and shrubs in full bloom in the middle of summer, right back to stumps.

Oh blimey. I’m surprised your mother didn’t murder him!

Instead of cutting the 1st tree down you might ask a tree surgeon to look at reducing the canopy. DP have an enormous & very old ash in their garden. They'd never dream of chopping it down but did have canopy reduced a few yrs ago & tree surgeon advised this would actually likely extend its life & reduce risk of ash dieback. This was done at request of new neighbours & hadn't been considered by them previously.
The conifer, difficult to cut many back as they don't regrow if you chop into them too much.

Conifers take a lot of moisture from the soil and I personally hate them and removed from our garden. However wouldn’t take out an oak tree. It can be topped by a qualified tree surgeon but you made need permission.

The shed roof should be checked by a specialist, nobody can tell from the internet.

I have conifers.. not like the one pictured though, a row of lighter, bushier ones. I know people hate them but the sparrows in my garden adore them! They like to bounce around on the tip of the branches and they're like a little sparrow trampoline park 😂 When they've finished they like to bathe in the dry mud underneath 😍

Just had to add that, as they're not all bad!

Do you measure everything in pounds, shillings and pence @taxguru ?

The OP specifically asked about costs!

Nobody has answered your shed roof question. Yes it does look like it could contain asbestos. It's not dangerous as long as it's not damaged or disturbed but I would get it checked out.

Also if it’s asbestos it will be made of cement bonded asbestos sheets. This is one of the least dangerous forms of asbestos. It’s actually legal to remove it yourself and certain council tips will take it. You just need to use the right precautions, mask etc, and it needs to be wrapped in plastic sheets and sealed with tape before the tip will accept it.

My garden.

  • I love the shade in the summer. It’s - - 10° cooler at the bottom of my garden.
  • I don’t get TV through the aerial anyway so that doesn’t matter.
  • Not much bird mess.
  • my car is at the front of the house.
  • so what if leaves get everywhere. They can be swept up or left to be habitats for all sorts of wildlife.
  • I’m not that fussed about grass. Don’t try growing full sun plants in shade.
  • gutter ls will need cleaning regardless.
  • pull up seedlings.
-

Amazing view!

OP - if you don’t like the beautiful oak tree please don’t buy the house. Find a treeless house overlooking a field or park instead.

What's the actual issue here? Given the size of those trees I can't believe the OP didn't know they were there at all on the first viewing. So is the OP happy for the trees to be there if they are outside the garden, but want them completely destroyed if they are a few feet in to the property line?

They said they didn't know they were in the garden. I didn't get that bit either. If they're keen to remove them it would actually be better for them to be in their garden as they'd have zero control over them otherwise 🤷‍♀️

I suppose it might have been after dark? Bit hard to miss otherwise
