Large trees in garden

I am buying a house but when I didn't go in the garden on my first viewing. I requested a second viewing and was chocked by what I saw.

There is a very large tree at the bottom and two large conifer trees as you can see in the images. I thought the big tree was outside the property but it turned out it's inside.

How much do you think it could cost to remove the trees?

Also, does the shed's roof look like those ones with asbestos?

Thank you.

I don't understand why you were shocked at trees being in a garden?!?

You’ve obviously never lived near a big tree:

  • Blocking out light
  • Blocking tv signal
  • Bird mess everywhere
  • Sticky sap all over cars and windows
  • Leaves everywhere in autumn
  • Grass not growing properly under tree
  • Gutters getting blocked with detritus
  • Seeds dropping all over eveything

Trees are great, but too near a house -No.

They also reduce the noise levels, give you shade in the increasingly hot summers, provide shelter to birds and wildlife and help clear the air pollution.

Cutting trees is an act of ignorance.

My garden.

  • I love the shade in the summer. It’s - - 10° cooler at the bottom of my garden.
  • I don’t get TV through the aerial anyway so that doesn’t matter.
  • Not much bird mess.
  • my car is at the front of the house.
  • so what if leaves get everywhere. They can be swept up or left to be habitats for all sorts of wildlife.
  • I’m not that fussed about grass. Don’t try growing full sun plants in shade.
  • gutter ls will need cleaning regardless.
  • pull up seedlings.

Thank you for your response. I am not chocked by the trees but by the mess. We have the same issue where I currently leave and they are blocking the drains and damaging the garage and shed roof.

Not sure what you’re implying....or what the tree are but can find out.
One old boy got around the preservation order saying there was nothing tree was diseased - we think.

I’ve lived near lots of big trees. I am quite happy to clear up leaves. They make an excellent mulch for the garden. Never had a problem with signal and I think there are ways around this. Most trees don’t block light, especially deciduous trees. There are lots of plants which grow under trees. Woodland plants love this type of habitat. I think people are just lazy and it’s no wonder we are the worse country in Europe for our tree numbers with these weird attitudes.

But those things aren’t a nuisance, they’re just trees behaving like trees. Leaves everywhere in autumn! Yes, and? And grass isn’t meant to grow under trees.

It’s like OP going outside and being shocked to discover there’s some outside there.

It was just a silly joke, not trying to imply anything 🙄

You were missing an apostrophe in your previous post, so when you said "my friends do" it read as though your friends have a TPO on them, rather than your friends' tree (obviously i knew what you meant, but sometimes a bit of humour is fun). An ent is a talking tree creature from Lord of the Rings.

What mess? Do you mean leaves? Just get a brush and clear them up.

How can you be chocked by mess?

Rispithe · 17/02/2025 12:45

Hi, thank you. I was chocked by the mess.

You may find that because the house is on the market the sellers have "checked out" of garden maintenance, focusing on getting the house looking nice for sale. So they may not have raked leaves since the autumn for example. No garden is looking at its best in February!

Seeline · 17/02/2025 12:54

What mess?

Owmyelbow · 17/02/2025 12:55

It's not a mess, it's nature, don't buy the house if you don't like the tree. Lelandi fine, they contribute very little, but that other tree will be supporting whole ecosystems.

Chuchoter · 17/02/2025 12:58

Chop the bloody awful conifer down but leave that old tree alone.

Just be aware that when you chop the conifer down there will be eleventy million spiders looking for a new home.

IBloodyLoveMyBlanket · 17/02/2025 13:00

Oh @ChompandaGrazia your photo has made me happy. I can't wait for spring. I hope you had a Chomp and a Grazia while you were sitting there.

custardpyjamas · 17/02/2025 13:00

We took down a big sycamore that was totally shading our veg plot (it was a fairly small tree when we bought the house 30+ years ago). Cost about £1,000 we kept the big wood and they cut that into reasonably manageable lengths and removed the small stuff for that price. It was a proper tree surgeon.

And before anyone says, we have a lot of big trees which we love, just this one had got really huge and was not in a good place, there are other big trees maybe 30ft either side as well, outside our property.

I think the OP means “shocked”

Lavenderblossoms · 17/02/2025 13:11

Please don't chop them down fgs.

Bloody humans honestly. One day we'll have no sodding trees that help with oxygen.

If you're that bothered get them pointed but please don't chop them down.

Those trees have probably been around longer than you.

squashyhat · 17/02/2025 13:13

Nobody has answered your shed roof question. Yes it does look like it could contain asbestos. It's not dangerous as long as it's not damaged or disturbed but I would get it checked out.

They block light when they are 10ft from the house and twice the height of the house. Clearly you did not live quite so close to such a large tree as I did.

Leeto888 · 17/02/2025 13:25

That’s quite a different situation @Doris86 amd absolutely no reason to be against trees in gardens as a general principle, which appears to be your point. I would be amazed if it’s true it is so close to your house and that you are not exaggerating. Your main problem seems to be that trees shed their leaves.

MegTheForgetfulCat · 17/02/2025 13:27

Doris86 · 17/02/2025 13:20

But that isn't relevant to the tree here, which the OP says is at the bottom of the garden. Even if the first photo is taken from the doorstep, the tree is clearly some distance from the house.
