Talk to me about a dishwasher, pros and cons?

Really debating a dishwasher after just making cottage pie and the pure amount of dishes it has resulted in. Are they worth it? Can you put everything in a dishwasher? I hear you have to rinse them beforehand, is this literally just run under a tap or? Feeling overwhelmed!!
we are a family of 5 and have lots of dishes to wash daily it is exhausting me having to cook for an hour and then cleaning the dishes and the rest of the kitchen for another hour!! How do people have time for this on a school night 🤯

Get a dishwasher, it has programmes for dirty pans. They're not even very expensive.

DustyLee123 · 11/02/2025 18:18

I wouldn’t be without one.

Haricot · 11/02/2025 18:18

items absolutely don’t need rinsing. Just scrape off any residue first.

BIWI · 11/02/2025 18:20

The only thing that doesn't go in the dishwasher is wine glasses.

Sometimes not pans, but only because there isn't room for them.

Dishes need to be scraped of any leftover stuff, but not rinsed beforehand.

I wouldn't be without one!

Lilacbluewaters · 11/02/2025 18:21

Oh and does anyone know the costs of a dishwasher/installing

I rinse or scrape some things, others don't need it.

You can't put absolutely everything in it but it breaks the back of the job. Dont put in good glass west or non stick pans (I have steel now instead which go in it).

I doubt many people once they've had a dishwasher would want to be without one. They're more energy efficient than handwashing too.

Comedycook · 11/02/2025 18:23

I love my dishwasher....there are no downsides as far as I'm concerned. I rinse off any loose particles of food but that's it.

BooomShakeTheRoom · 11/02/2025 18:27

I never rinse, just scape and load. We wouldn’t be able to keep up without one!

Bankholidayhelp · 11/02/2025 18:28

There are no cons
Plumbing in is straight forward. Just needs to be near a sink /water.

No33 · 11/02/2025 18:29

No cons, wouldn't be without one now.

Person1234 · 11/02/2025 18:32

No cons, only pros! Get one!

I wash nearly everything in mine, including wine glasses.

Soontobe60 · 11/02/2025 18:32

Am I the only one wondering why you’re doing the cooking and then doing all the washing up? Get the other lazy sods in the house to do it! (Oh, and get a dishwasher)

Cheesesteakyum · 11/02/2025 18:33

No downsides for me tbh, very few things don’t go in ours - wooden spoons as it dries them out, the good glassware but seldom use it. Most of our pans and oven dishes are dishwasher safe, I just don’t put Dutch oven type dishes in and non stick frying pan. If you have space get a full size not a small one.

I couldn’t agree more !

Clean dry dishes and cutlery…. Wonderful

Huckyfell · 11/02/2025 18:36

Once you get one you'll wonder how on earth did i ever manage without one with 5 in the house.... we've got 2 and always in use. I don't understand how you can have family life without one to be honest..
Bit like handwashing clothes before washing machines were invented 😂

soupyspoon · 11/02/2025 18:38

Unfortunately Im not a fan but that is because I can smell 'dishwasher' on things and it leaves spots and OH insists on EVERYTHING going in there so our glassware, knives, scissors and plastic pots are ruined. We're in a hard water area and no matter how much salt or rinse aid or cleaning of the machine takes place we get residue.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 11/02/2025 18:39

No cons. I wouldn't be without one.

PoemsForTea · 11/02/2025 18:39

I'd marry mine

DreamW3aver · 11/02/2025 18:42

Unless you don't have room or can't afford one I can't imagine what the cons of not having a dishwasher for a family of 5 could possibly be

dementedpixie · 11/02/2025 18:49

Scrape, don't rinse. The detergent needs something to work on. I wouldn't be without mine. Gives you somewhere to store your dirty dishes until it's full enough to go on. Make sure you have plenty of cutlery!

I don't put in baking trays or dhs sharp knives. I do put wine glasses in as the ones we have have short stubby stems

Zanzara · 11/02/2025 18:51

Having a dishwasher was a condition of marriage for me. It wasn't such a thing back then, but I insisted. DH was wholly on board.

I have real regrets about installing a dishwasher in Zanzara Towers when we moved in. I regret letting men on the project persuading me to only have one. I wanted two. (One clean, one to wash, as far as practicable ). BIG mistake.

Don't be me. Go for it OP. It also puts the dirty pots out of the way until you're ready to deal with it.

Edited to add, I do hand wash my glasses. I love my glasses.

bellocchild · 11/02/2025 18:54

We've had a dishwasher (or truthfully many!) for 40 years. I even check we've got one in our holiday rentals. They are efficient, and very hygienic compared with washing-up by hand.

OnlyFrench · 11/02/2025 18:58

@PoemsForTea me too, but I'd probably have an affair with my air fryer

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 11/02/2025 18:58

Plus you can cook a whole salmon, wrapped in foil, in a dishwasher.

(We used to have to buy little tins of it before.)

Aposterhasnoname · 11/02/2025 18:59

Had a dishwasher for twenty years and I’ve never rinsed a dish or pan in all that time. Just clean it regularly and you’re golden. Wouldn’t be without one.
