Anthracite grey or white window

Hi,

We are looking to replace the windows on this 1930s semi detached property. But struggling to pick the colour, would you go for anthracite grey or white UPVC? Eventually we would like to replace all the render too.

Houses on the road are mix of white, grey, black and brown windows.

Help please!

I’d go for white, I think the grey will date. It’s very ‘in’ just now but I’m sure that trend will pass very quickly.

abnerbrownsdressinggown · 31/01/2025 09:46

White. Anthracite is going to look dated very quickly and windows are expensive to replace.

Blarn · 31/01/2025 09:48

White. Grey looks so dated already, although would absolutely be easier to keep clean.

Or, go with a colour and match your door to it. A house near us has pale blue frames and front door with brick and white rendering. It looks beautiful.

I'd go white, that's what we did a couple of years ago. Similar looking house. I just think the anthracite grey will look dated in a few years but white won't

user8432176409 · 31/01/2025 09:51

White/cream.
Grey windows will be the avocado bathroom, mosaic tiles, red feature wall etc of the next few years!

nookmiles · 31/01/2025 09:52

Back in the 80s brown windows were the thing. I feel like now the grey ones are the same trend. They will date. White is classic and doesn't date. Windows are expensive. I think white suits your house best.

rwalker · 31/01/2025 09:52

I’d go black striking ,different and also traditional grey looks shit already

Viviennemary · 31/01/2025 09:53

White. These grey/brown/black windows look awful in most cases

BlueRaspberry7 · 31/01/2025 10:12

White. I was nearly tempted to go anthracite grey on our 50s semi and now very relieved we didn't.

Tupster · 31/01/2025 10:38

Definitely white - those grey frames only look good on modern style houses where the industrial look fits the architectural style. Houses like this look awful and will look shabby and dated way very quickly.

CellophaneFlower · 31/01/2025 11:19

I don't mind anthracite windows on the right house and I hate the whole "dated" thing... the world would be a very bland place if everyone just opted for the safe option. However, I do think white would better suit your house.

SoapySponge · 31/01/2025 11:25

The grey is going to date very quickly, like those awful dark brown windows that were so popular a while back.

Gekko21 · 31/01/2025 15:20

I want to say grey or black as I think it looks great, but like others I do worry it will date very quickly. We had our windows redone a few years back and went white in the end because I was worried it would date and it's not something you can easily change without spending a lot of money. I would definitely white render over the pebbledash whatever windows you choose. It'll look so much smarter.

OnGoldenPond · 31/01/2025 21:11

On that house definitely white. We have anthracite windows and love them, but we have a new build, ultra modern house so they look right. Dark grey windows on older properties just don't look right.

RosemaryRabbit · 31/01/2025 21:34

Definitely white.

2025mustbebetter · 31/01/2025 21:36

Oh god please get white! I think grey windows look officey. White won't date!

verycloakanddaggers · 31/01/2025 21:58

White. Grey has already started to look 'of its time' whereas white is the basic classic.

BuzzieLittleBee · 31/01/2025 22:38

Grey windows have very much been a thing for around 20 years now, and they're not going anywhere. Loads of new build estates round here are putting them in.

The pale green windows that started cropping up at the same time as grey ones have definitely dated and have had their day, but grey ones are here to stay.

@OP - use one of the online visualiser tools and see what looks good. Or just draw over the white with the paint tool. There's no right or wrong answer to this one!

SquishyGloopyBum · 31/01/2025 22:43

I'd go back to the period of your house. So not white, but cream.

SecretSoul · 01/02/2025 07:29

Have you got any photos of the houses in the same road with grey windows? I can’t quite envisage it.

White windows get really dirty - and weirdly, I always think white looks quite dated 🤷‍♀️😂

I am planning black windows for our 1960s house. Our front door has a black surround so white windows would look weird, imo.

Are you planning on changing the front door and the frame? If so, what colour? If you’re changing the colour of your window frames, I think your doorframe needs to complement it. White doorframe and grey windows would look odd.

Rellotello · 01/02/2025 08:12

I think Anthracite generally looks awful but that’s partly because people also seem to go for really thick frames - so it’s just a load of grey plastic! I’d go for black it you can afford really slim aluminium frames, otherwise white. Having said that, we have agate grey windows on our house (kind of a soft green/grey) might be worth a look but i have a different style of house.

I like anthracite against cream or white render. I have the awful rosewood frames that many have mentioned (not by choice!), on cream render. I actually don't think they look that bad and would certainly prefer them to white frames of the same age as assume they'd look really aged by now.

LynetteScavo · 01/02/2025 20:53

On that style of house definitely white. On a detached with white or cream render grey would
look OK, but not on that house. (The other photos you've posted of houses in the road prove the point)

JC03745 · 01/02/2025 21:02

White!

We started renovating a 1930's property 4yrs ago and grey was already on the way out back then! We have black aluminum frames, because they have the narrowest frame and most similar the original crittall.
