House in Wimbledon

Hi all!

I have been trawling Rightmove and speaking to agents but cannot seem to find anything. Can a wise musmnetter help me?! We are looking for a 4 bed home with a driveway in Wimbledon. Not too far from the station is our main criteria. Budget up to 1.5 MAX. I cannot for the life of me find anything and we want to move soon!

Also any guidance on areas? I’ve heard not near the park given the upcoming works.

We initially had our heart set on Richmond but that’s not happening due to plane noise!

look at places close to Wimbledon park and Southfields district line stations. You'll find something within budget, eg

CloudPop · 22/01/2025 18:10

Admittedly not great for getting to the Rowans

PlaneNoiz · 22/01/2025 18:55

Could do Donhead from there which is an option. But tbh I don’t want to be near the park given the years and years of upcoming construction!

Merton Park is a nice area. And you can jump on the tram direct into Wimbledon Station.

If living in Raynes Park you'd definitely want to be towards Cottenham Park or Holland Park. And you're very close to Wimbledon Village from there.

DLRPmember · 22/01/2025 20:12

I wouldn't want to live in Wimbledon Park. Much less green space - I
Like being able to walk straight onto Wimbledon Common and over to Richmond Park.

Both nice. I know those roads well 😂

PlaneNoiz · 22/01/2025 20:25

😂😂! The Laurel Road one seems very ideal given the size. Is it a busy road?

Thank you. We really need to be close to a district line station though.

The more expensive northern end of Merton Park (the conservation area) is only about 10 minutes walk from Wimbledon Station.

Another very happy Raynes Park resident here! And we're also sending our child to the Rowans :)

I occasionally need the district line for work (I normally get the mainline into Waterloo), and when I do it's one stop - three minutes - to Wimbledon and then change. And the trains are frequent. We live just 2 mins' walk from the station. We rely on on-street parking as we don't have a drive, but it's almost never been an issue in the nearly ten years we've lived here.

The local area has decent shops and cafes, and you're a short hop to Wimbledon village or Wimbledon town centre if you're after more. At the weekends we can walk up the hill to the common, visit the pub and generally enjoy the combo of urban and country living the area provides. And yes, there is plane noise, but nowhere near as bad as Richmond! (Believe me - I wanted to live in Richmond, and my husband refused due to this point! He's very sensitive to noise and he doesn't find it a problem here.)

My recommendations:

www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/154940675

www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/155251433 (this is the "less desirable" side of the tracks but it's an easy enough walk to the station, and you certainly get more house for your money!)

But I see what you mean, not much on the market! Give it a month or two, I think people who plan to sell want to get through one last Christmas before having a clean up getting the house ready to sell in spring.

Amity Grove would be good. 5 mins to the Co-op and Waitrose! I wouldn't recommend Grand Drive though.

Amity Grove would be my preference as well!

It's worth taking a look, but I'd also keep an eye out for anything coming up on Pepys Road, Lambton Road, Cambridge Road, Durham Road, Richmond Road, etc.

You are so so so helpful. Any suggestions of nurseries to register my DDs at anticipating a future move and London wait lists?! I’ve looked at two in churches which seemed ok.

I live in Wimbledon Park, have done for years. Not bothered about the upcoming works btw. Don't notice plane noise.

Anyway, friend lives in Raynes Park. I think it's really nice and quiet but with surprisingly good bus and train links considering that. And access to A3 etc. Easy to walk to the common and on to Putney Heath. It has a pretty good set of shops of a slightly more independent variety. You also get much bigger gardens than Wimbledon Park and Wimbledon itself. Plenty of park space and houses with park views.

Southfields is good too!

tobee · 22/01/2025 22:59

Good restaurants and pubs in Raynes Park too. Can't comment in an up to date way about nurseries and schools as dc are adults now.

OMG.

This house was a massive part of my childhood. My best friends dad built it - they owned the house next door & built this & then moved into it.

It has aged, for sure but when this house was lived in by the original family it was one of the nicest homes I have ever been in. The floors were sort of a bleached wood. The rooms were all painted soft shades of white and garden was exquisite. I wish I had pictures to show you what a truly truly gorgeous family home this was.

I know the layout of the kitchen seems odd but it worked so so well. I never thought I’d see this house again - it is a shame it’s been ruined inside (decor wise) but it could be easily put right.

it was built for a family of 6 & was so well designed. There was a snug/office when you went in the front door that was gorgeous. There was a breezeway to the side with a swing indoors too.

Honestly, go and see it is you can. It was a wonderful home. They had real vision. It was such a stylish, ahead of its time home.

what do you think of worple road

Koulibiak · 01/08/2025 21:17

@Butterflypoetry you may want to start your own thread as this is quite old. FWIW Worple road is quite busy, I wouldn’t want to live there.

Needs some updating but fits your criteria? https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/156059129#/?channel=RES_BUY

Additional bedrooms but has a drive:

Pine Grove is lovely - they are town houses, but in a great location. Really good state primary (bishop Gilpin) just up the road.

we have just sold our 5-bed (with parking) v close to the station for £1.4m so there are definitely options !
