House in Wimbledon

Hi all!

I have been trawling Rightmove and speaking to agents but cannot seem to find anything. Can a wise musmnetter help me?! We are looking for a 4 bed home with a driveway in Wimbledon. Not too far from the station is our main criteria. Budget up to 1.5 MAX. I cannot for the life of me find anything and we want to move soon!

Also any guidance on areas? I’ve heard not near the park given the upcoming works.

We initially had our heart set on Richmond but that’s not happening due to plane noise!

Needs some updating but fits your criteria? https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/156059129#/?channel=RES_BUY

Additional bedrooms but has a drive:

I saw nearly all the houses in that road have been for sale recently so got scared there’s a problem haha

We were in Wimbledon but lived to Raynes
Park (West Wimbledon) to get the drive and a detached house. RP mainline is fast into Waterloo and Wimbledon station is a quick bus ride away.

Oh how interesting!! We looked at Raynes Park as an area and loved it. But we use the district line and the station seemed far away in traffic. Is it a nice area? Perhaps I ought to reconsider. The kids will hopefully be at Rowans which seems a good distance from there too.

It's very convenient for Wimbledon. My husband regularly uses the District Line and cycles to Wimbledon to pick it up. I just get the bus along Worple Road.

It's a very nice area. Easy access to the Common via Barham Road and quick to get to Kingston.

Oh that really makes me happy. Could you possibly tell me a bit more about the area? Nice shops and people etc?

We also have a house in Raynes Park and I really love it as an area. Easy to get to Wimbledon and into London. But you get a bit more for your money there.

Isn't there still plane noise in Wimbledon? I'd rather live in Richmond with the noise than Wimbledon

Is there? Every time I’ve gone it’s been quite faint but nowhere near as bad as Richmond?

Drives are not that common in houses in Wimbledon town (if you are more flexible on areas where it's less accessible to the station you could get one).

Most housing is Victorian era so they were not built in that style.

I know Wimbledon well and most people have a car and can still park close to their house.

Agree with pp that Raynes Park might be the place to look if a drive is essential.

Aussiegold · 20/01/2025 14:59

I do know a house in Wimbledon, South Park road area, that fits your criteria, including off road parking for at least 3 cars, but needs A LOT of work and is in probate, depends when you want to move and if you wanted to do a refurb to get what you want.

Unfortunately we don’t want to do much work! I have a newborn and that’s a bit too much of. Project but thank you!

That’s really really useful. Where I currently live it’s residents parking and it’s really hard to get a spot especially if you go out on the weekend and it’s proving difficult with the kids!

I’ve actually started a thread with two houses I like. Would you happen to be able to help? https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/property/5258000-raynes-park-wimbledon

This is minutes’ walk from the station and has off street parking. Not expensive for the area.

I used to live in Raynes Park. Nice area and the good schools keep prices bouyant. Wouldn't say it's convenient for the District line though - a bus would take a while to get to the tube, or it's a train (couple stops).
I live in the South Park grid. You won't get what you want here for your budget (most are terraced and very few driveways and the fourth bedrooms are teeny weeny), though the Haydons Park Rd house looks a good buy and is only a few streets away. A friend sold hers on that road a couple years ago for £1.65m, but she is an interior designer and it was gorgeous. The far end is close to the Thameslink train which goes through the City up to St Pancras.
The Coombe Lane house - not a lot near there and it's a distance from Raynes Park train too. Feels very suburban.
I think Raynes Park might be your best bet.

amyboo · 22/01/2025 15:41

Good friend of mine lived in Raynes Park until a few months ago - near the cricket club. Lovely area - 5 minute walk to shops and the station. Kids were in good schools. They had a semi-detached 5 bed house with offroad parking... Seemed like a great place to raise kids - parks and open space nearby, and central London was only 20 mins away on the train....

AreYouMeOrWhat · 22/01/2025 15:47

I hugely preferred living in Wimbledon to Raynes Park. No idea why people call RP a lovely area; definitely not my idea of one. I was in the Apostles; it is nicer the other side of the railway, I grant you.

Give up on the driveway and go to Wimbledon. Much more going on, it really is a nice area and RP is a pain for the District Line as you have to change trains/from the bus (unless cycling works).

Coldanddamp · 22/01/2025 16:02

RP is fine, the high street is ok & you are very close to Wimbledon. If catholic the excellent state secondaries are pretty close to it too.

HappyWhenItsSnowing · 22/01/2025 17:04

Look at Southfields Grid and Wimbledon Park

Much nicer in my opinion

Better schools / Better community / Better Transport

OurFlagMeansAfternoonTea · 22/01/2025 17:09

Have a look at Merton Park, SW19 as well. It's near both Wimbledon and Raynes Park, but there's lots more chance of driveways.

PlaneNoiz · 22/01/2025 17:30

Thank you. We really need to be close to a district line station though.
