Log burner novice

Hi

we are hopefully moving into a property with a log burner, ive never used one before and want to try and maximise its use.

In your experience what type of logs are good for burning over a long period?

How many logs do you roughly use per day? If just for an evening or if youre in all day?

Presumably it is better to bulk buy logs?

Thank you in advance

Yep, just like cars or gas boilers or BBQs.

Not really helping prove your point when gas boilers and cars are being banned……? 😂

There are systems that provide complete combustion of wood and solid fuels. You can even take the efficiency of a wood burner up from 70% to around 90% using a gasification system.
Have a Google for rocket mass heaters and masonry heaters. Effectively these will burn maybe 10 kilograms of wood very efficiently and the exhaust fumes are vented through a series of turns to store the heat and release it slowly over up to 24 hours. Only masonry heaters are approved without inspection by building control.

Efficiency, Location and Sizing of a Masonry Stove Heater

It is possible with a well designed masonry heater to heat a whole property & to add a baking oven and back boiler into a masonry stove.

Yep, which is why gas boilers are being phased out and cars are being transitioned to electric.

Gas cookers are another hazard. You couldn’t pay me enough to have one of those in my home.

@Soontobe60 we've been spending over £200 a month for heating during the colder months as everything is electric so we dont have a gas boiler in this flat

to spend £200 over dec/jan/feb would be ideal in bringing costs down

will look into moisture meter, though kiln dried logs seem to be the way to go

thanks
