If you had a white stucco Georgian detached house, what colour would you paint the front door?

Currently a safe but boring glossy blue

I have a Georgian (well, regency) townhouse that has a stucco front and our front door is black. I love it because it looks so classic and also goes with the black railings outside. However, I have seen front doors look lovely in a sage green round here.
Apologies if you know this, but farrow and ball list colours that go together. So if you know what colour your house is painted in (because I'm assuming it's not a brilliant white, and is an off white instead) then you could get a green (or a different colour) to tone with that. I think sometimes people don't know this and the colour they choose for the front door jars with the off white of the stucco.
Having said that, it sounds as if your house is quite grand so maybe black would be best in any case!

I grew up in a house like that, and in a conservation areas. We had a dark green door.

LaDeeDaDeeDa · 06/01/2025 15:25

Black.

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 06/01/2025 15:40

Do you have a tiled path?

SunnyPlumMember · 06/01/2025 17:16

As an interior designer, I have loads of opinions on high glass Vs eggshell! My main question would be who is painting it (if you eggshell) and if it is an old door it would do eggshell otherwise gloss can be a pain and look messy very quickly. I have recently completed to projects in Balham/Clapham and we painted one Railings Farrow and Ball and one a paint and paper shade.

Blue!
Which is no help to you at all 🙃
Sounds a beautiful house 🏠

@neverwakeasleepingbaby Actually, that's a really good idea. It's Cornforth White, which I know sometimes seems grey, but looks white in this instance.

@TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams No, it's reclaimed Portland Stone.

@SunnyPlumMember It's a newly made replica door as the original was long gone and the existing door was practically made of cardboard. It would be the excellent painter we've used for the rest of the house, so I'm pretty confident in his work. How did the Railings one come out?

What colour are the window frames and door frame?

muddyford · 06/01/2025 17:58

I saw a Georgian house a while ago with gorgeous sea-green door.

Vert de Mer

The great thing about this ‘sea blue’ is that it conveys the warmth of the Med and the greeny depth of the ocean. As a wall colour it brings a richness that is free of the seasons but is wonderfully timeless and so can complement any age of furnishings...

My previous house was a Georgian white stucco (well, very slightly off white, much more pleasing to the eye in a Northern climate). We painted our windows, doors, fencing and gates in F&B French Grey. It was stunning and is def go with that colour combo again. Very much pleased the Conservation officer as well.

Zippedydodah · 06/01/2025 18:08

French navy or deep purple/red

Neutral - great.

Are you after ‘classic’ or more whimsical, eclectic?

If classic, I agree with others to stick to a more neutral colour palette (black, navy, stone).

Personally I’d opt for a dark rose colour and use plant pots and climbers to compliment.

BraveStarr · 06/01/2025 18:13

Another vote for shiny black

Little Green Mischief

I like it but suspect that would give the conservation officer a heart attack 😅

Striking Cyan in Dulux Trade Pro range is closer.

Classic, I think. It's in London, so not a charming country house, and we're going to be limited by the need to get it approved. Though I do like a dark rose colour...

Have just looked at that one. It is really nice, but again, I don't want to kill off the conservation officer (who has been very kind to us).

As you say the front is painted in Cornforth White, I would definitely say go black, for example Railings.
You'd need to be careful with a green to make sure it toned in and didn't have much yellow in. Same for a pink.
But my choice would be black. So classic and will look fab 😄
