If you had a white stucco Georgian detached house, what colour would you paint the front door?

Currently a safe but boring glossy blue

Purplecatshopaholic · 05/01/2025 13:06

Pale blue or pale pink.

LaLatina · 05/01/2025 13:16

F and B Bamboozle.

MrsMoastyToasty · 05/01/2025 13:38

Black.

I live not far from lots of Georgian houses (Bath) and loads of them are black. It's probably a grade 2 /Unesco world heritage thing.

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 05/01/2025 13:40

Assuming it's listed, you'll have very limited choices.

MeandBobbyMcGoo · 05/01/2025 13:41

I'd also say shiny black.

CaptainCabinetsTrappedInCabinets · 05/01/2025 13:43

A nice deep navy. With a sheen, but not glossy.

Germanjio · 05/01/2025 13:44

Ours is navy. I wanted deep yellow but DH vetoed it.

BaronessBomburst · 05/01/2025 13:46

Black!

MeanMrMustardSeed · 05/01/2025 13:46

Green. Forest green!

ladymalfoy45 · 05/01/2025 13:46

But. Is it TARDIS blue? I want our front door painted TARDIS blue but it's boring British Racing Green .

NeddieSeagoonsSteamPoweredTelephone · 05/01/2025 13:50

Architectural historian here! Black, for preference, but otherwise a very dark forest green, Trafalgar blue or a very dark maroon.

Pootles34 · 05/01/2025 13:51

Different colour every year, and I would be very happy indeed. So jealous!

OnlyFrench · 05/01/2025 13:54

I painted mine F&B Blue Grey (a pale green Confused) twenty years ago and the current owners have kept it. I'd probably do black now.

user5566774 · 05/01/2025 14:04

Thank you all - lots of ideas.

@Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies Yes, it's listed, but I think (hope) they'll be pretty flexible on this considering it's not actually an original door and the hoops we've jumped through so far.

@NeddieSeagoonsSteamPoweredTelephone Thank you!

@LaLatina I really, really like that, but suspect it would be a step too far for the conservation officer.

In our area, the Conservation Officer is really strict. I mean, we live in a non-descript Victorian house, in a conservation area and have had problems changing the colour of our door (and, yes, we were looking at a colour which was more historically appropriate than the existing colour). If we lived in one of the nearby Georgian houses the chances of choosing the door colour really would fall into the snow flake in hell category. So I may be overly sensitive to the issue.

PigletJohn · 05/01/2025 14:16

Sunlight heats the door, making the wood shrink, which causes cracking of paint at the joints. Proper wooden panelled doors are made so that the panels can move, and slide in and out of their grooves. This will crack the paint but, worse, if the joints have been painted heavily, sticking the panels solidly in place, the panels will split. This is often seen on old doors, it is very disfiguring, difficult to repair well, and if the paint is not scraped out of the joints, will happen again.

Black paint is especially bad as it gets hottest in sunlight. The reason 10 Downing Street does not have a cracked door is that it is a modern steel replica.

Red paint fades in sunlight. I don't know why, but now you know, you will notice it.

butshesatschool · 05/01/2025 14:23

Also Georgian white stucco house - front door is railings colour from farrow and ball. Door furniture is bronze so it blends in. We chose it to be a bit more interesting than black!

user5566774 · 06/01/2025 09:37

@PigletJohn

Thanks for that information. It's a newly constructed solid wood replica door as the original was too trashed to save, so has only been painted once. It's south facing, but we have a portico, so somewhat protected, but I'll definitely keep that in mind. Does the gloss level have any impact on that?

@butshesatschool

I really like Railings - think it would be lovely as a halfway between blue and black. I might get a swatch, but will definitely keep @PigletJohn's advice in mind.

Red.

Londonmummy66 · 06/01/2025 14:15

Not white stucco but t is a Georgian house - we currently have F&B Bible Black which is actually a deep purple but when we repaint we'll probably go with Railings. Most of our neighbours have black but there are also a bright yellow, a crimson and a sage green.

BettyBardMacDonald · 06/01/2025 14:23

Black or dark sage green.

Itcantgetanycolder · 06/01/2025 14:39

Ours is a pale pink

slightlydistrac · 06/01/2025 14:42

On the whole, I'd probably go with gloss white. Otherwise possibly either black or duck-egg blue. It would really depend on whether there are other similar properties in the same street. If the property is in a conservation area, then there might be local regulations over colour schemes, so worth checking that out.

Wot23 · 06/01/2025 14:57

gloss post office red
(in reality I'd leave it the blue you have it)

Lampzade · 06/01/2025 14:58

MeanMrMustardSeed · 05/01/2025 13:46

Green. Forest green!
