How much to tip removal men

Completing on a house tomorrow. We've got the full packing service. Guys were here yesterday, they've almost finished packing up, just got beds to dismantle and load last few items on the van, drive us over then reassemble furniture and unload. They've honestly been bloody great how much should we tip them?

I think we tipped ours £100 (between them, not each!).

Starseeking · 03/01/2025 03:50

On the day they came, I took all their tea/coffee orders and bacon/egg/sausage roll orders, and did a run to the local cafe.

Unfortunately I didn't have the pre-packing service, however they were absolute speed demons and got our 3 bedroom house loaded, transported and delivered to the new house before midday. There were 6 of them, so I gave £10 each, which they seemed pretty happy with.

Twiglets1 · 03/01/2025 06:59

Last time we moved we gave them £20 each (plus regular coffee runs to local cafe).

FiveShelties · 03/01/2025 07:09

We had a full packing for an international move and we gave them £200 between four men who were with us for 4 long days. They were amazing.

CarrieMoonbeams · 03/01/2025 07:11

4 guys, £20 each.

Roselilly36 · 03/01/2025 07:25

Moved in 2021, gave them £20 each.

QuotetheRaven · 03/01/2025 07:26

Why on earth are you tipping? You pay for the service. We didn't tip, their service cost us about 5k.

exactly this. They cost a fortune and are doing the job they are paid for. I offer them tea and coffee while here and that’s it. Never even occurred to me to tip. Bizarre.
all these responses like they are doing you some kind of massive favour. Seems a very British thing - almost like you feel guilty for making them do all this physical work.

sorrynotathome · 03/01/2025 07:36

I gave them £20 each - as far as I was concerned they went above & beyond, so I wanted to thank them. There’s no shame in being appreciative. Nothing to do with feeling guilty - what a bizarre thing to say!

Lovemybunnies · 03/01/2025 07:39

You tip when people have worked very hard and don’t get paid very much. It’s not obligatory but it’s nice for them when it happens.

I don't live in the UK, and don't imagine anyone would even think of tipping them here. They are being paid to do a job, like other people who no-one would bother to tip. I didn't think tipping was part of UK life, and yet there are often threads about tipping hairdressers, binmen etc.

How on earth do you know how much other people are paid? Confused

AuntieMarys · 03/01/2025 07:45

I gave ours £100 between the six of them and went to Gregg's for sandwiches, pasties, coffees for lunch. They were incredible....dhs garden stuff alone took 2 hours to load . We had 3 massive vans.

genesis92 · 03/01/2025 08:00

Christ I didn't know this was a thing. I paid £1200 for a packing and removal service a few months ago. I feel like that's enough

CheeseTime · 03/01/2025 08:08

We had two over two days and they were amazing. Gave them £100 each. They were from some man with a van small business number, clearly not their own company and the very reasonable payment went to some man on WhatsApp as they were the only people available at very short notice. Would have paid a proper firm £2-3K if I’d been able to find one!
They cost £900 for two days with hundreds of miles of travel included. Both young and from abroad. The tip was gratefully given.

Jesus. Why? You went to Greggs for them?? You don’t think they brought their own lunch and drinks? “they were incredible” There is nothing incredible about wrapping and packing stuff. I can only presume that it’s such an alien thing for middle class people to see someone do a few hours of non stop manual work that that they feel very guilty and feel the need to over compensate.

Just Bizarre.

endsnewyearsday · 03/01/2025 08:24

The removal men I know around here are self employed and charge enough.

DisforDarkChocolate · 03/01/2025 08:30

£100 between three of them. They were excellent.

wait, I’m just responding to my own post - not sure what happened there!

FancyNewt · 03/01/2025 08:47

It wouldn't occur to me tip them given how much they charge.

HelloCanYouHearMe · 03/01/2025 08:58

The removal people I used did nothing but bitch and moan about each other between themselves and to me and then told me that if I hadn't collected the keys for my purchase property by 2pm, I would owe them an additional 15% for every 30mins past 2pm until the keys were in my hand (a clause conveniently not in the contract but emailed to me on the day of the move)

They were lucky I made them a brew

What a patronising comment. We did our own packing, dh is as working class as they come and they went over and above for us. My ds had taken his own life 7 weeks previously and I appreciated their kindness.
So fuck off.

MrsSkylerWhite · 03/01/2025 10:44

£20 each and keep the tea and biscuits flowing at the other end.

Because sometimes you feel like they have done an extremely good job and you want to say thanks with money as well as words. The guys we used stayed cheerful throughout despite it being a very tough job (4th floor flat and on the day the lift broke down).

I doubt the guys that do the heavy lifting get that well paid though the company may charge a lot.

People can tip or not tip as they want, no need for judgement either way. Same as my hairdresser, I tip her most visits but some of my friends don't or only at Christmas.

zingally · 03/01/2025 11:57

Had 3 guys in September who just did the move from my upstairs flat to my new house across town.
Gave them £20 each, which they seemed very pleased with.
