Ive posted on here a while back about hating living in a semi detached with very poor sound proofing.

Cant wait to move i hate this house and i hate sleeping in spare bedroom

I would never buy a semi detached again

Congrats! this is my dream. I live in a 1bed flat with my family 😂

Heating will cost a fortune.

True that's the one downside.

lolly792 · 23/12/2024 10:42

Our heating bills are higher than when we lived in a semi, but not hugely so. And it's absolutely worth every penny! Can't put a price on the quality of life living in a detached house has given us.

whirlyhead · 23/12/2024 10:46

I’ve lived in a semi, terrace and detached (currently in detached). The quietest by far was the Victorian terrace! I get to listen to the neighbour’s seriously dreadful music now in the garden… (and I have a big garden)

the school across the road is noisy too but that’s fine. The mad parking mums are less fine!!

Seaitoverthere · 23/12/2024 11:16

Enjoy it ! I have been lucky enough to live in detached houses for most of my life. Currently in an Edwardian semi which has been pretty fine but neighbours have moved and I’m a bit worried.

The worst noise we have had had was last detached house when one of them took up basketball and the bouncing noise drove me up the wall.

lolly792 · 23/12/2024 11:21

Absolutely, garden configuration very important too. I wouldn't want a newish estate style detached where the houses are often built very close and where the full length of garden often adjoins next door's and where there's often a garden adjoining at the back too.

Not necessarily , my gas and electric is about £150 per month in a large 4 bed detached and no restrictions on use and us all sitting about in T shirts . Our house is extremely well insulated and not allowed to get really cold so never takes much to reheat . Congratulations @Ben35 , enjoy your new home .

We lived in a semi for years and omg our neighbours were awful. They had teenagers so there was constant shouting and screaming arguments. The lady of the house was constantly doing DIY and we could hear her hammering away at all hours, she then decided that she wanted wooden flooring all over her house so we could hear them on the stairs, in the bedrooms. It was depressing. That was the attached side and on the other side even though we weren't attached, in the summer as our windows would be open we could hear them in the bathroom when they were clearing their throats 😷😱😭As soon as my youngest finished school, we were out of there. Now live in a detached house - it is bliss. we are so happy here no noise from next door, neighbours and area is lovely. Would never go back to attached.

Really dont care 😁

Absolutely! And not true necessarily. I lived in a Victorian detached for 20 years. Now in a semi and the heating bills are no different.

I lived living in a detached house and have got a semi now due to location, location, location! Touch wood our neighbours are very quiet and hopefully will never move!

Awful isnt it. I made a big mistake buying this house 5 years ago. Not enjoyed living here at all due to the noise. Luckily made a decent profit and can get away shortly

I don't really get the desire for a detached house. When I fantasize about my lottery-winner's dream house, it's usually a semi or and end terrace. I've never lived in a detached house, but my mum lives in a detached house in the middle of a wood and my in-laws in a detached house on a fairly new estate, and I'd choose a joined up house over either of those.

If i couldnt hear next doors every movement and could enjoy my home in peace and quiet i would more than happily stay in my semi detached home.

I think youve got the wrong end of the stick

I moved from detached to terraced. I'm fortunate with both the house and my neighbours- decent sound insulation (house is 1900s) and good neighbours with one a middle aged couple who work away a lot the other a young family but not noisy (it's tenanted and these are the third lot, all quiet except one barky dog for a few months). Only sound issue was when one side had a loft conversion done, but that was only for a few weeks and I myself have had work done.
I once lived in a semi and my neighbours banged on the wall even if I was having a normal conversation! I had two young children there (they had none) and they made me feel like I was being scrutinised. Couldn't wait to leave.
Hope the move goes well and the house is everything you've hoped for!

Heating will cost a fortune.

My energy bill is far cheaper in a detached 1960s house than my Victorian terrace.

Enjoy op it is utter bliss, silence is golden!

Likewise.
The energy costs for our NB 4-bed detached are lower than our previous 30's, 50's & 70's semi's despite the detached have greater sq ft.

Based on actual monthly readings, not DD's.

mjf981 · 26/12/2024 00:47

Next door to me have a new baby. The bedroom is next to mine. Never heard a peep previously but now....I wake up to the screaming most nights. Its driving me absolutely mad, as there's nothing I can do or say to them. Just have to wait for the baby to grow up! Its so depressing. Enjoy your new home OP, I'm well jealous.

useitorlose · 26/12/2024 07:02

When we retire we are moving to an apartment that's currently off plan, in a place that we really want to live. DH is already stressed about neighbour noise and they haven't even cleared the ground it is going to be built on yet!

Ben35 · 26/12/2024 09:43

Cheers ive had it for 5 years. Sleeping in spare room on a matress on the floor. Never again

Blimey, £150, that's really good, I'm in a 4 bed detached ( circa 1960s) my energy bill ranges from 250 -300 a month, I'm positive there is something not quite right, there is only me and the dog, also the walls are supposed to be insulated ?

lolly792 · 27/12/2024 13:58

@Notadream blimey, that's a lot!

lolly792 · 27/12/2024 14:00

Do you have the heating on for large amounts of the day? We're in a 4 bed detached and our bills are a fair bit lower than yours, but we do only have a blast of heating early morning before work and then again in the evening.

That said, I'd probably pay double on bills for the advantages of being detached, the quality of life is so much better

So I was doing 2hrs in the am and then again in the PM. Spent the past three years freezing cold and working from home with the temp sometimes as low as 7 degrees during the day. I thought I would take it on the chin this year, I know its still relatively mild but I've tried the theory of keeping it on all day at 16-18 degrees. Since i've done that it's been an extra £60-80 a month but i'll take it on the chin for a few months and if means I'm not wearing a wooly hat around the house or gloves etc during the day and its been bareable. There is deffo something not right as this week by the Weds my Smart meter told me that i'd spent £30 on Gas already, i've not changed the settings, and i'd usually spend £25-30 in a whole week on Gas and another £20-30 on electric depending on if I had used the Tumble dryer in the week.

Soccermumamir · 28/12/2024 13:39

Aww congratulations. We're hoping to move to a detached this year too. Currently doing DIY and hope to sell in 2025 🤞
