Finally moving to detached house

Ive posted on here a while back about hating living in a semi detached with very poor sound proofing.

Finally bought a detached and will be moving around February hopefully.

Cant wait to move i hate this house and i hate sleeping in spare bedroom

Congratulations! You're very fortunate. I'd say I'd never buy an attached house again but you never know what the future holds so I don't want to sound entitled.

It really is the best thing you can do! I can make as much noise as I want and not worry and I don't have to listen to anyone else's shit. Mostly.

No, I don't like living in an attached property either.

I don't like to hear my neighbour's comings and goings and I don't like the thought they can hear mine.

Enjoy being detached as not everyone is fortunate enough to be able to.

Have previously owned 30's, 50's & 70's semis with differing amounts of soundproofing provided by the party wall but our det NB is by far the best.

I'm in a semi built 4 years ago. Never yet heard a sound from next door, nor they from me. Proper sound insulation in new houses. I was here when they came and checked it before giving the place the OK.

We went from a flat to a detached house. After a decade of neighbour noise from all sides and parking nightmares, it was so worth it.

Heating will cost a fortune.

I would love a detached house but I've never had sufficient spondoolicks.

Our energy bills are higher - as is insurance and council tax. But I spend a lot less on leisure activities now as I like being at home - and pottering in the garden when it's nice - so it works out. Whereas before we spent a lot of money every month on meals out etc to try and be out of the flat as much as possible, because of the neighbour noise.

Yes its murder in this house its like living with next door it really does my head in.
I knew the bills would be a bit higher but its an easy trade off in my eyes

Your lucky mine has been an absolute nightmare. Didnt even cross my mind when i moved in. Wouldn't want to risk it again as its ruined living here and its a lovely house now aswell

We've gone the other way, after 30 years in a detached house, we downsized to a semi.
It has good soundproofing I'm told, and luckily our living rooms are at furthest ends away from each other. I hear if next door slam the kitchen cupboards against the joining wall and Dh says he hears the kids on the stairs sometimes, but it's not bad.

We live in end terrace stone cottage with walls 3ft thick so don’t hear a thing from next door. Been here 20 odd years.

So for those who can’t afford detached, consider solid stone build in a semi or terrace.

Living detached Is amazing and if it’s an older detached even better. We never hear our neighbours and they can’t hear us either and although we’re quiet 98% of the time we do like the odd 5am post-club kitchen party 😂🥂

I too love being in a detached home, our previous ones were semis. We let lucky with our second one as the next door property was vacant for 4 years. They eventually sold a young family that had screaming arguments every night. That's when I was done with attached neighbours.

We stretched to buy a detached but honestly, it's the best thing we've ever done. It's hard to put a price on the quality of life it offers!

It's not even as though we've always had bad neighbours when living in joined properties. We had some lovely neighbours at one point but I still didn't want to hear their doors shutting, their plumbing, their kids running downstairs. It also made me conscious every time I played music. Then the lovely neighbours moved and it was quite stressful wondering who would move in next. The worst neighbour we ever had was one who liked music with a heavy bass beat oh and he had a barking dog too

Someone upthread mentioned spending far less on going out once they moved to a detached and I totally relate to that. When we bought our detached we were very happy to spend evenings in, the feeling of freedom it gave us was immense. The problem with being attached is that you're at the mercy of whoever happens to live the other side of the wall. You might have the best neighbours in the world but that can all change in an instant if they move.

Worth it.

We did our big move to a detached after living in a semi where we could hear the neighbours cough, hear their microwave ping and they took up a tirade of hate against us when we had a tantrumming toddler, banging against the wall when she had a tantrum etc.

It was the best thing we ever did. Dh was on medication because of the stress of next door, they even called the police on us once as when dd had a tantrum (over princess shoes) they banged on the wall and Dh, having had enough, banged back. We then got a visit from the police who’d they’d told we’d left her crying and screaming all day. We’d been home about 2 hours at that point having been out all day. The police couldn’t confirm but they heavily hinted they would be getting a visit for wasting police time. We used to go out, all the time, we were barely at home because of the stress they caused. Now we love being at home and spend weekends in the summer just pottering in the garden.

This is my dream. Not sure if it will ever happen but I can dream. Congratulations on your new home. Sounds lovely and peaceful.

Bills don't have to be higher - maximise on insulation (esp when the loft is empty as you move in), double glazing, thermal curtains, LED lights, etc.
I just found some bills from 20 years ago and having done the above and got solar until 2022/3 we actually were paying MORE for electricity back then.

We are now detached and without wishing to sound over dramatic, I’m euphoric. It is such an unexpected freedom. I want to be at home at even though we had perfectly nice neighbours, I no longer feel an ounce of worry when the kids get loud or Dh decides to DIY. —not that I think our old neighbours gave it any thought when it was them—

I hope we stay fortunate enough to never ever go back.
