I am rubbish at colour. I've painted the living room a safe 'powder colour' pale pink which is ok but quite neutral
Plaster is drying currently. Floors are stripped pine (with plaster spoldges on at the moment but will be cleaned up 😅)

A bright light blue x it's not fashionable but I miss the blue hall I painted in my last house so much

MayaPinion · 05/12/2024 09:20

Wedgewood blue with white ceilings and woodwork would look stunning - classical but bright and warm, and a great background for pictures.

MayaPinion · 05/12/2024 09:20

Also looks great with wooden floors.

PrincessOfPreschool · 05/12/2024 09:22

I think a, darkish green. Will look great with the floor and any pics/ photos you put going up the stairs. There is an F & B colour I used in my kitchen. Sorry builders chucked tin so I'm not sure what it was called. You can often get colours mixed to a very similar colour.

That hall looks naturally quite dark to me. I think you’ve got two choices: try to brighten it up, or embrace the darkness. If it was me, I’d probably go a fairly bright yellow - not lemon, something with a bit more depth and warmth to it - or something pale and light like Dulux Timeless.

Or you could go completely the other way with a dark colour and paint the woodwork dark too. This is quite on trend so might date and might be a pain to change if you don’t like it but it could look really good in a space like that. Little Greene and Farrow and Ball have quite a lot of ideas on their websites even if you don’t want to use their paints.

CalliopePlantain · 05/12/2024 09:24

I’d go for an emerald green but with contrasting wood colour. Hot pink or sapphire

Lizzbear · 05/12/2024 09:25

How abouts a pale taupe. I'm loving the "greige" shades that are in now. They look v tasteful!

Following as I’ve a similar question for our stairs 😄

I got several pots from f&b to test

different shades of white
peignoir
sulking room
elephants breath

i prefer light as otherwise I’d feel im in a cave

@GreengrassofW Personally I do not use strong colours for narrow areas. It would feel far too enclosed for me. Your hall is quite narrow so I would go for a very straightforward scheme given the huge amount of wall you need to cover. I would absolutely hate bright yellow or green.

These are understated classy ideas from F&B. You can use a subtle colour as a backdrop for pictures and other works of art and don’t forget the bannisters and hand rail. These can really enhance a subtle scheme. I think the white shades with the dark handrail is a great scheme for a narrow space. That would get my vote.

Railings F&B
Denim dulux (I think)

Avoid light grey / beige - chavvy.

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 05/12/2024 10:05

Avoid panelling!

Chocolately · 05/12/2024 10:06

Our hall is similar and painted Nutmeg White (either Crown or Dulux, not sure).
It's a light and warm tone.

TizerorFizz · 05/12/2024 14:39

De Nimes is a F&B colour. It’s a grey denim colour. I have it in my classroom, it’s great in a small space but in my view, not for a huge wall.

I do not think “chavvy” is an acceptable descriptor for anyone or any scheme. Many hand their merits and panelling is very chic!

Amateuuur · 05/12/2024 14:50

I’d personally go with white or some kind of off-white/light beige colour. I like everything to be as light as possible. But clearly that’s not allowed as a preference, and I must be a chav! 😂

Pootles34 · 05/12/2024 14:56

How can a colour be chavvy? Honestly I despair.

BarnacleBeasley · 05/12/2024 15:03

We used a rich cream colour from F&B, think it might have been Farrow's Cream. Our hallway is similar but with a dado rail and opens into a massive landing. We got the samples of cream for the upper section and wanted a mustardy yellow colour on the bottom, but this cream turned out to be darker than we expected, sort of like a rich, golden buttery colour, so we used it on the bottom with a lighter cream at the top. It looks great in the narrow dark bit, and with artificial light, and equally good (but different) upstairs with loads of natural light. So moving a bit in the direction of bright yellow, but with a more muted tone that feels more grown up and suits the period of the house.

MarmaladeSideDown · 05/12/2024 15:12

Whatever you choose, for heaven's sake don't paint the woodwork anything other than pure brilliant white.

I like the pp's suggestion of Wedgwood blue walls, and maybe an olive green or that yellow that somebody mentioned.

Pleasehelpmedress · 05/12/2024 15:54

I've got a similar hallway and I've painted it F&B Stone Blue and I still love it 10 years later. Looks great with wooden furniture and the stairs are white with a jute runner.

LSTMS30555 · 05/12/2024 16:05

For a warm & inviting hallway I think a nice golden sand colour or mustard colour.

HumanRightsAreHumanRights · 05/12/2024 16:14

Something a bit paler than you think you want because the walls will reflect off each other and make the colour look more intense and darker than it is in a sample.

TheRainItRaineth · 05/12/2024 16:17

I love the idea of a really sunny yellow. Like in the hallway in Downing Street.

Eetzup · 05/12/2024 18:03

Our narrow, north-facing hallway is F&B citron with white paintwork, darkish oak floorboards and unpainted stairs like yours (keep meaning to get a stair runner but never get around to it!) We have a gold/red vintage persian rug on the floor and a very heavy old gold curtain across the door and a couple of large mirrors to bounce light around. It's warm and welcoming all year round and deliciously rich and cosy-looking in the winter months.

IMO, of course 😁

I’ve been testing some f&w today. Some surprises of colours I didn’t expect them to be like that

Paint them on paper then put on the wall. The way you’ve done it with a patched base can affect the colour.
