What colour would you paint this hallway?

I am rubbish at colour. I've painted the living room a safe 'powder colour' pale pink which is ok but quite neutral
Plaster is drying currently. Floors are stripped pine (with plaster spoldges on at the moment but will be cleaned up 😅)

North facing hall here also. After much hooing and haaing and millions of testers, a plain old off white on the walls + brilliant white on the rails is what I did. Once the pictures/painting/mirror went on it looks good. Now. I wasn't keen first off, but delighted now.

The icing on the cake was a (for me) brave decision to put a jewel colour teal carpet on the stairs, and got a painting (in the charity shop) that had a lovely gold frame and pale teal colours in it. I'm getting used to it, but I do like it now!

Mirrors essential, especially near the door or other source of light.

Paint them on paper then put on the wall. The way you’ve done it with a patched base can affect the colour.

Yeah I know. I’ve painted in several walls not only in one place. But thanks for the tip

What colour will the stairs be?
I’ve done two recently- one dark red carpet, rich William Morris wallpaper and white woodwork. The other one greige colourwashed woodwork and walls except the bannister and tartan carpet.

Sulking room pink. Gorgeous in every light

Steamie · 05/12/2024 18:49

Oooh we’re just having our hallway plastered too!
gone for village maze by Dulux which is a lovely green, not sage and not olive either, but in between. And having wallpaper too, hopefully you’ll get lots of lovely suggestions!

lizzie0712 · 05/12/2024 18:54

Our hallway is Dulux Goosedown, it's light blue/ grey depending on the light. I think it's lovely, neutral but not boring.

FuzzyPuffling · 05/12/2024 18:54

Your hall is exactly the same as mine. I've gone light and neutral so the rooms off it can take centre stage, and the light bounces around.

When we moved in, the floor was stained mahogany ( we had it sanded back, and clear varnished) and the walls were mid green. It looked dark.

I've now got a combination of white and Little Green Rolling Fog.

Beware! I painted mine a Smokey grey/blue F&B, can’t remember name. I hate it after 1 year, dull and cold. Will change in the new year for an elephants breath type colour but not in F&B as it picks up handprints bloody constantly.. too chalky!

Angelofmycoins · 05/12/2024 19:09

Blue here as well. I like really pale almost white blue, just goes really well with my colourful pictures, I have a colourful rug too in hallway

TizerorFizz · 05/12/2024 19:12

@PTSDBarbiegirl You can get F&B in a modern emulsion. We use that in high traffic areas. It’s very good!!

GreengrassofW · 05/12/2024 20:02

Thanks very much everyone xx

Loving dark green and gold at the minute, if you wanted lighter I would go for a brown/beige although that's very common at the minute

Papricat · 05/12/2024 20:22

Break the wall. It looks claustrophobic and makes me depressed to even think about walking through it.

MimiSunshine · 05/12/2024 22:03

I’ve got Wickes Soft Cashmere in my west facing limited light hallway and stairs.

i really love it, it’s a perfect light neutral that is warm and cosy but not dark or trying to be bright which never works in a light limited space.

ive colour matched all of the woodwork in so the space feelings bigger and had the ceilings painted in dulux timeless rather than pure white.

My 'I don't know yet' colour is Dulux Egyptian Cotton. In our house, it seems to work in most lights, and somehow manages to be both neutral and not dull.

Are you recommending making the rooms open plan? That's so weird. I think the fad for open plan is definitely ending and it would be a big mistake.

Winter2020 · 06/12/2024 22:51

I think the white example (with the check carpet) looks really nice. The added bonus for a white hallway is no cutting in between the walls and high ceiling - just slap it on.

Crikeyalmighty · 07/12/2024 00:19

@Steamie o was going to suggest that one too

TizerorFizz · 07/12/2024 08:13

@TheRainItRaineth It’s not ending at all, However it possibly would not suit this house to have the staircase open to the living areas. It’s all about suitability and design.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 07/12/2024 08:25

I agree about dividing the wall horizontally. When you have a very tall narrow space, a division adjusts the optics. Paler colour above, darker below. An actual rail isn’t really necessary, if you have a steady hand you can draw a dividing line, or use a very thin beading stuck on with no more nails.

Your hallway has some lovely features with the coving which you might want to highlight with a darker colour on the walls.

On the other hand if you want it light and bright try the dulux light and space paint, we painted our very dark hallway in it and the difference is amazing in terms of how light and bright it is!! I think it has particles in it that reflect the light or something.

Nic834 · 07/12/2024 08:58

TizerorFizz · 05/12/2024 09:55

@GreengrassofW Personally I do not use strong colours for narrow areas. It would feel far too enclosed for me. Your hall is quite narrow so I would go for a very straightforward scheme given the huge amount of wall you need to cover. I would absolutely hate bright yellow or green.

These are understated classy ideas from F&B. You can use a subtle colour as a backdrop for pictures and other works of art and don’t forget the bannisters and hand rail. These can really enhance a subtle scheme. I think the white shades with the dark handrail is a great scheme for a narrow space. That would get my vote.

Hi sorry to go off topic but I love the colour of the panelling in one of the pictures (a grey/taupe type colour). Do you know what it is by chance?

thanks

zingally · 07/12/2024 10:44

It looks quite naturally dark. So you either embrace that, and go dark, or you do the opposite and go really pale.

Depends how brave you're feeling really!

coniferred · 07/12/2024 11:42

I'm not going to suggest a colour - I have a similar hall, it was ainted a pale cream - it felt cold and unwelcoming and I see it over and over again in British homes - the weather is cold and dreary and the hall feels the same - so what ever you choose, go warm and cosy - it doesn't have to be dark shade but make sure it isn't a cold shade of whatever colour you decide. Give yourself a warm hug every time you come home.
I'm double-drenching my hall with various shades of warm pink, the staircase spindles are going black - along with a few other features to add a bit of sobriety. White will be banished. (I love white but it's not a good hall colour, always too cold unless you get loads of light)

TizerorFizz · 07/12/2024 15:26

@Nic834 It’s from the Inspiration on F&B for halls. Cannot remember the name of the colour but take a look.
