Help me pick a sofa (links provided)

Hi everyone.

I have been mulling over these 2 sofas over the longest time and I'm not sure which one to get. It's for my small snug which is only 4 metres by 3 metres and will only be used occasionally. Unfortunately I can't go try either of the sofas out because they are not in stock near where I live. These are the narrowest sofas I've found in my budget, which shouldn't take up too much space in the room.

Option 1
https://www.johnlewis.com/john-lewis-anyday-sweep-small-2-seater-sofa-light-leg/saga-grey/p3879250?s_ppc=2dx_mixed_home_BAU&tmad=c&tmcampid=2&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAiAxqC6BhBcEiwAlXp453ziwk_ArWyRLsgZQhPBec2uA-TcLF0JwhXZfS6jaib_nNUs4XDn2hoCzW0QAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

I will have to get 2 of these. The sofa looks quite sturdy and comes with a 15 year warranty. I have also always had good customer service from JL.

Option 2
https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/lillehem-modular-corner-sofa-4-seat-vissle-beige-wood-s69536155/#content

This one is a new ikea design, it has washable covers and is a corner modular sofa, so I can add more pieces on and customise if i want to. It is also narrower than the JL one but from the photos it looks like it could be quite uncomfortable and is fairly low down.

I've never bought a sofa without sitting on it and I just can't decide which to go for. I would appreciate any input.

Thanks.

The ikea one. You can get ‘ blocks’ that you put sofa feet into to make sofa higher ( sorry don’t know what they’re called!

Have you ordered from Roseland or have that sofa? I was looking at them but didn't know anything about the company (apart from what I've read online) or the quality of what they sell.

I have that sofa in teal but from brandalley.

Had it 2 years and it still looks good as new, extremely comfortable! I love it.

Both look very uncomfortable.

i got my last sofa from homesense for £180, just went in for candles and came out with a sofa. Very comfortable and good quality.

DoreenCorkhill · 30/11/2024 19:21

Have you looked at Sofa Sofa?
Good quality for not much more price wise.
The two you have linked to don't look very comfortable and I always feel the legs look fragile on those styles .
Personally I like a deep seat and soft cushions - but everyones different are you a lounger or do you like your sofas to look smart ?
Consider fabric protection - well worth it in my opinion .

TheRealKatnissEverdeen · 30/11/2024 19:41

Agree that they both look uncomfortable.

I'm getting a small sofa for my bedroom so have also been looking at compact sofas (although I agree with other posters that the dimensions of your room isn't particularly small) and have found something on eBay that is the right dimensions and looks comfortable.
One contender that I really liked was this one from Dunelm although I discounted because of the arms.

I'm looking at sofas atm and have come to realise some very nice looking sofas are not comfortable and look like they'll constructed from matchsticks. Very important to see it and sit on it, not just order online. Though maybe you're happy to try and send back but I don't want the hassle.

Lotsofsnacks · 01/12/2024 21:58

That IKEA sofa does not look comfortable!

Aberentian · 02/12/2024 08:45

GettingThemFromHereToThere · 29/11/2024 18:11

I also don't like the look of either. Sofas are intended to sit on and feel comfortable; these look clinical.

Function has to stay the first consideration in my mind.

Not everyone wants to slorm about on their sofa. I like a cleaner more upright line.

Aberentian · 02/12/2024 08:46

Also Ikea's manufacture is more ethical than a lot of places being suggested on here, if that matters to you at all.

RobinEllacotStrike · 02/12/2024 14:34

Don't buy a sofa without sitting on it!! (Speaks unfortunately from experience)

lindyloo57 · 02/12/2024 17:22

I've just ordered a laura ashley sofa from next, they have it in store in a 3 seater I've ordered the 2 seater, so we did try it and its lovely and soft, the lady did say as people had sat on it , it will be a little softer than a brand new one, the good thing about next is its only £15 delivery where somewhere like DFS charges £100 and if you don't like it as its brought online it can be returned, I may have already done this with a grey sofa we ordered from them but didn't like the colour when it arrived.

Feelingstrange2 · 02/12/2024 17:29

Have you looked in any local.charity furniture stores? We've bought ours from.the BHF store and they delivered for a small extra charge

Obviously you only get a choice of whatever they've got at the time but you can try them.out and they are really cheap. I think I'd look there first before buying new for a snug room

TheRealKatnissEverdeen · 02/12/2024 22:23

The Jacob from Dunelm has good reviews. I had set my eyes on it but I think it was too large for my space.
Edited to say, I'm not sure why I discounted it as its actually the perfect size for me!

GettingThemFromHereToThere · 29/11/2024 18:11

I'm derailing slightly, but is 4m x 3m considered small for most people? That's a very normal sized living room where I live (semi, South East).

It's the size of my living room, and I think it's a pretty good size 🤣 1-bed flat, rural Midlands. I'm used to London terraces, though - standard width 4m and you have to slice a corridor off that, so living rooms are less than 3m wide.

BunnyLake · 03/12/2024 20:05

They don’t look comfy but good if you trying to get visitors to leave :)))

Bringithere · 03/12/2024 20:43

I like the look of the IKEA one best. Removable covers is a very good thing.

RachelGreensHair · 04/12/2024 01:53

Those arms!

On the topic of box sofas, I got mine from Snug when they had a ridiculous sale on and they're great.

Ah, just gone they're website and they're "on a break" having been bought by SCS, might explain why they were practically giving their sofas away!!

The JL one looks incredibly uncomfortable.

It is. I sent mine back.

Asvan · 04/12/2024 22:25

Thanks everyone. I decided to go for one from Next from the Mila range. A very kind mumsnetter PMd me photos of hers and assured me how comfy it was.

We went sofa shopping a few months ago for my daughter. Looked at IKEA first, but were really disappointed at the cost and the quality (so many seemed hard to sit on, and more expensive than I expected). I would certainly try the real thing (or something clise to it) at an IKEA store before I bought it.
We ended up buying a better quality sofa for less money at another furniture store in our geographic area.
