Help me pick a sofa (links provided)

Hi everyone.

I have been mulling over these 2 sofas over the longest time and I'm not sure which one to get. It's for my small snug which is only 4 metres by 3 metres and will only be used occasionally. Unfortunately I can't go try either of the sofas out because they are not in stock near where I live. These are the narrowest sofas I've found in my budget, which shouldn't take up too much space in the room.

Option 1
https://www.johnlewis.com/john-lewis-anyday-sweep-small-2-seater-sofa-light-leg/saga-grey/p3879250?s_ppc=2dx_mixed_home_BAU&tmad=c&tmcampid=2&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAiAxqC6BhBcEiwAlXp453ziwk_ArWyRLsgZQhPBec2uA-TcLF0JwhXZfS6jaib_nNUs4XDn2hoCzW0QAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

I will have to get 2 of these. The sofa looks quite sturdy and comes with a 15 year warranty. I have also always had good customer service from JL.

Option 2

This one is a new ikea design, it has washable covers and is a corner modular sofa, so I can add more pieces on and customise if i want to. It is also narrower than the JL one but from the photos it looks like it could be quite uncomfortable and is fairly low down.

I've never bought a sofa without sitting on it and I just can't decide which to go for. I would appreciate any input.

Thanks.

Sorry OP they both look extremely uncomfortable!

This is better.

Weirdly I have both of these sofas. Good news is that I have I been pleased with the quality of both.

I would choose based on what you are going to use the room for. I use the JL sofa sitting, drinking tea, chatting - nice coffee table in front of it etc.
I use the corner sofa for lying on, watching TV

PrimalLass · 28/11/2024 23:21

The ikea one is only 76 deep. That's very narrow.

Asvan · 28/11/2024 23:52

The sofa will be for occasional use and mainly for sitting (not lying down̈). We have another living space where we have a huge, extremely comfy corner sofa.

Sorry if you don’t want suggestions but we have a “sofa in a box” from next. It’s small but it’s actually really comfy. The assembly was literally slot the back in and screw the legs on.
We have had them 6 months and they still look as good as new and the cushions are still as new. No slouch or sag.

Could be worth a look.

Thanks. Do you know which range it is? I will have a look. I would also appreciate a pic of what yours looks like if possible. Thanks.

I’ve got a slightly older version of the JL one and it’s really comfy. My cat has absolutely destroyed it by scratching but I’m thinking of getting some kind of loose cover for it. I must have had it about eight years or so.

Yellow38 · 29/11/2024 08:47

I'd go for the Ikea one, easier to care for and looks comfier (padded armrests). Their customer service has been good in my experience eg online chats, quick refunds and advice etc if needed, and don't have to have long phone conversations if there's an issue.

The John Lewis sofa armrest looks hard?
I like to shop at John Lewis but their customer service isn't what it used to be (in my opinion/recent experience).

Could be worth giving John Lewis and/or Ikea customer services a call to see if either sofa is on display in a department store near you? We did this a few years ago and went to see a few we had in mind and tried them out before buying.

StripeyDeckchair · 29/11/2024 09:21

The ikea is ugly and looks uncomfortable
The JL looks more comfortable but I don't like the arms

If it has to be one of these two then I'd go with JL but in all honest I'd carry on looking for something nicer

Miffylou · 29/11/2024 09:43

I like the look of the JL one much more, but have you read the online reviews? Quite a lot of buyers say it’s very uncomfortable. I’d keep looking.

TubeScreamer · 29/11/2024 13:34

The JL one looks incredibly uncomfortable.

BringMeTea · 29/11/2024 15:18

The Jysk sofas look better.

rainbowunicorn · 29/11/2024 18:02

Both look very uncomfortable. Like the kind of thing you see in waiting rooms or staff rooms. Not really intended for any length of sitting down on. I would keep looking.

GettingThemFromHereToThere · 29/11/2024 18:11

I'm derailing slightly, but is 4m x 3m considered small for most people? That's a very normal sized living room where I live (semi, South East).

GettingThemFromHereToThere · 29/11/2024 18:11

I also don't like the look of either. Sofas are intended to sit on and feel comfortable; these look clinical.

Function has to stay the first consideration in my mind.

Muymit · 29/11/2024 18:13

What other furniture will be in the room.and what is the layout of doors and windows. I don't mean this in a snarky way but I'm not sure you need to narrow your search down specifically to a compact sofa. Your 'small snug' room dimensions are the size of an average sitting room for most people who live in average UK homes! So I think you may be missing out on better options. Go to somewhere like Sofology or Oakland Furniture where you can try sitting on sofa samples which include ranges they often title for 'urban living' (read small new build houses!).

CissOff · 29/11/2024 18:35

I second a sofa in a box from Next - I’ve got an occasional sofa from there and it’s comfortable (and small!)

NoNoNona · 29/11/2024 18:47

Not wild about either of them. Can you find something more comfy looking for your usage?

That's what inwas thinking! 🤣 I'm north east England and my actual only sitting/living room is 4x5m, and I don't know anyone close to me in real life with anything bigger.

Spondoolies · 30/11/2024 09:11

Neither sorry, they both look uncomfortable!

askmenow · 30/11/2024 10:23

Oops sorry about the loooong link. First time doing it.😨

Isabelle70 · 30/11/2024 10:33

Neither of them look very comfortable. Is it that style you are looking for with the hard slim arms?

Fannyfiggs · 30/11/2024 11:11

Have you ordered from Roseland or have that sofa? I was looking at them but didn't know anything about the company (apart from what I've read online) or the quality of what they sell.
