What colour would you paint your kitchen if...

Your cupboard bases were a light wood colour and your cupboard fronts were mid grey?

I know, I hate it. It's awful but it was like this when we moved in and it's council so I can't put a new kitchen in.
I was considering putting new fronts on but I don't think anything else would actually look any better with the faux wooden backs.

Tiles are white and am going to put new tiled floor in (colour suggestions welcome too)

Well if it was me I’d probably go a warm off white. Boring I know but you’ve already got 2 colours going on with the units plus your white tiles, so I’d be cautious about any really strong colour because imo it’ll be too much going on. Floor wise probably something darker, maybe a deeper grey?

edit to add; if that’s bare plaster I can see in the corner of your pic, make sure it’s mist coated! Am currently rectifying and ceiling where that was skipped and it’s a nightmare!

Yes it's plaster, it was done over 2 years ago (way before we moved in) so we have a lot of prep work to do aswell, we will coat it.

The thing is
I really, really, really hate grey so think maybe if I swapped the cupboard fronts to maybe a sage green or something that might open it up to more possibilities?

I absolutely don't want to add any grey

Are you allowed to paint the cupboards? We did that with a cheap kitchen and it looks great.

Maybe a dark aqua?

Looks to me like the doors have been changed but the cabinets left.

What is to stop you painting the faux wood (looks like beech to me) ?

To me it looks like a relatively warm grey (?). If so, I might add in coral, blue and white - I like layers of colour and you could find some great tiles that incorporate the colours and draw the focus away from the cupboards. Terazzo or patterned if you’re a maximalist or just jewel bright if not

If you're planning to be there long term and can afford it then you could put in a new kitchen. Otherwise you could paint the whole thing. With the right primer and enough patience you can get a great finish.

If the cupboard fronts are covered in a vinyl covering, you can remove it and then prep and paint the doors. We did this with an Ikea kitchen very successfully. The side panels can be covered by a film of wood laminate (self adhesive) or other contact materials, or primed and painted.

And maybe a pink patterned tile floor?

Fir the cupboards you could get a roll of light oak Fablon and see if it matches, it might look a bit more together.
Otherwise light teal/aqua blue would go nicely.

I really don't want to fablon.
My previous house was very small and I never had enough space to live there and each DIY was a patch up, like fablon or cupboard paint.
I want to spend the rest of my life in this house so don't mind putting a bit more money in to replace the fronts.
I just can't replace the bases and I don't really mind the bases as much, I just hate grey.

Ok yes I see. I think the carcases are a standard howdens type light oak so you can order new doors from somewhere like Lark and Larks. I'm just about to order some bits to improve our not-what-i-chose kitchen.

You can have kitchens professionally wrapped, if you have the funds - not sure how much it comes in at though.

I did ask last summer and the quote was 1500!
New fronts would only be about 600 with hinges and handles!

I would look into some way of painting, covering or replacing the grey doors, as like you, I dislike that colour.
If you're staying there, the new fronts sound like a reasonable outlay. Or you might be able to get some used ones.
I have bought some fabulous dark green fronts from eBay for £50, which will be going into my my utility room in due course.

I think that the faux wood backs would become less noticeable with a better colour.

I'm a bit confused whether you're looking for a wall colour to work with your grey cupboards or getting rid of the cupboard fronts to replace with difference coloured units.

If funds allow I'd swap the cupboard doors/paint a shade of green that you love. If you love sage then do that. I quite fancy dark green cupboards with wooden carcasses. You don't see much of the carcasses anyway but I'd be tempted to add more wood/wood effect like you say.

I don't plan on moving again, unless I need a bungalow or something and that's many years away!

I think the back would look.less noticeable too with some tweaking.

Grey is just so dreary

My whole house is green so I wanted to stay away from that but it is my favourite colour for rooms but my living room, bedroom and halls are all shades of green!

I was looking for advice on wall colours but posting and looking made me realise the grey really has to go because I will never be happy with it.

You can paint the entire cupboard, including the faux wood. As for the colour…..it depends on the light in the room, if you want cool or warm, light or deep, pastel or rich!

if you love green, what about using Vintro no seal chalk paint in brooklands? I’ve just used it on a table, it’s lush.

Ah I get this. We paint everything blue. I'm kicking to paint our hallway some colour other than white and blue and am similarly stumped.

That dusky blush pink you posted above would be amazing in a house full of green. Couple of plants, maybe olive green blinds for just a nod to the rest of the house.
