This board has become a forum for know-it-alls, and passive aggressive discussions

KievLoverTwo · 11/10/2024 04:01

I haven't been around long enough to see it in its hayday*, but 50% of the comments on this board make me cringe

Discuss?

(I am partially moving house this weekend - be back when I can)

*newb since March 23

OP posts:
CallMeFlo · 11/10/2024 04:09

Any thread with 'discuss' makes me want to do the very opposite

AutumnCrow · 11/10/2024 04:36

Discuss what, though?

You don’t give any examples of the kind of thing you mean, so it’s difficult to know what we’re supposed to be discussing other than your fairly sweeping premise.

Has a poster got on your wick?

SnaggingList · 11/10/2024 04:44

I don’t know about passive aggression. It’s certainly become a place for people to tell each other that the reason their massively overpriced house hasn’t sold is because they need to declutter more.

FergusSingsTheBIues · 11/10/2024 05:02

I find instructions like “Discuss” actively aggressive which is far more irritating

This is so true! 😂

SoNiceToComeHomeTo · 11/10/2024 05:23

What are you hoping to achieve by starting this thread OP?

SoNiceToComeHomeTo · 11/10/2024 05:27

I find the board mostly interesting and informative. There are one or two aggressive posts on most long threads on most boards I think, and not always passive!

Savingthehedgehogs · 11/10/2024 05:31

Op it’s a great forum! You just need to choose more wisely - pick threads that interest you. Learn to scroll by if it irritates or annoys you. Be more selective. Or just stop reading no one is forcing you too

discuss 😎

Totally agree. My usual response is "Fuck off"

EntirelyMadeofBosoms · 11/10/2024 09:26

Honestly, OP: I see you on so many of the threads here, and you’re equally as culpable. There are certain usernames that I see pop up again and again, and I roll my eyes and know that the “advice” is going to be a combination of incorrect, outdated, unhelpful or sanctimonious. It’s disappointing that MN doesn’t allow you to screen comments from particular users, but let’s just say that if I had that option, I’d never have seen this post.

Indeed, there's an awful lot of 'advice' that is portrayed as fact, seemingly from some people who've never bought a house before!

GasPanic · 11/10/2024 10:00

I think "declutter" is passive aggressive for "tidy the fuck up".

Rosecoffeecup · 11/10/2024 10:11

I find this one of the more informative and interesting boards tbh. And the buyer/seller thread was incredibly supportive when I was buying my home a few years ago

BarbaraHoward · 11/10/2024 10:11

Most of the internet is aggressive, passive aggressive is an upgrade.

Rollercoaster1920 · 11/10/2024 10:14

I do worry about how much bad information is provided, usually in neighbour dispute type threads.
However, people can provide information that is well intentioned but wrong. I once did this and someone else pointed it out (that's good!) which is what this forum is for, isn't it? This forum needs the knowledgeable people.

Passive aggressive is annoying. Bit camping or other posters is a waste of time, and why troll hunting is banned.

CountryCob · 11/10/2024 10:15

I think you have a point at times, especially when people have an agenda. I also think some posters have quite unrealistic expectations also and the correct response can be quite blunt. The fake professional advice on things like the law can be a concern, often delivered with excessive confidence. But I agree that is a broader internet issue

Imahosy · 11/10/2024 10:16

March 23? Pah!

True that Declutter and 'Tidy The _ Up' are pretty much the same, but it needs saying sometimes. Not everyone can look past piles of clothes and plastic toys to see the structure of the house underneath, and it's a shame to lose potential buyers for something that is relatively easy to fix.

SirChenjins · 11/10/2024 10:19

What an odd thread to start at 4am and then not reply to any of the comments in the intervening 6-plus hours about something you were so keen to discuss.

I think for me the issue is it that untidyness shrinks the space of a room visually, and although it is fairly easy to visualise a room with a new paint job it is a lot harder to visulaise the actual space when the clutter acts to make it appear smaller than it is.

That is coupled with the fact that one of the primary reasons people move is because they do/don't have enough space means that untidyness has a real impact if you are trying to sell your house to upsizers.

That and the subliminal message it sends that if you buy the house you too can live in a house that will look like a rubbish tip.

I think some people can look past it, but they tend to be professional buyers and people wanting to gut places. And the prices they are generally willing to pay are bottom dollar.

Apparently so - but then all the professional interior designers left and now it’s just us MNetters and our cluttered houses with mismatched cushions left.

Yes, and some newer houses in particular can be chronically short of storage space at the same time as having very small bedrooms. It must be hard to live in them tidily.

Justnobabe · 12/10/2024 07:17

Talking of passive aggressive discussions ... if you want one, at least participate in your own thread, OP.
