Japanese bath - thoughts?

I'm looking for a house at the mo. Ideally I'd like a separate shower and bath but in my price range v unlikely.

It occurred to me that in the space of a "normal" low/horizontal bath, which I never find deep enough, I could fit in a shower cubicle and a deep sit-in Japanese style bath.

Haw anyone done this? Thoughts? If you saw this in a house, would it put you off?

If that's what there's room for, I think it's a great solution. Having been to Japan I loved them. Definitely wouldn't put me off and definitely better than just a shower.

Seas164 · 29/09/2024 15:40

Love, have considered, would definitely not put me off

Gardengirl108 · 29/09/2024 15:41

It wouldn’t put me off, I considered putting one in our (only) shower room, but we ended up moving house in the end, so didn’t. I think they’re great. If you’re intending to stay in your new place for a good long while, have what makes you happy!

SauviGone · 29/09/2024 15:44

I would love it, it wouldn't put me off at all. I have a very small slipper bath in our house and it's perfect for me.

parietal · 29/09/2024 22:09

i'd love it - my aunt had one when I was a kid and we would go to her house just to have a bath (age 6 or so)

Purplecatshopaholic · 29/09/2024 22:17

I love them. Am considering one myself

Seainasive · 29/09/2024 22:26

We’ve recently had one put in. Best bath ever, but you really need to think about how/where the steps will go. Not sure we got ours quite right as getting out can feel a little precarious.

Marinel · 29/09/2024 22:27

I would love it - more than a normal bath. I’ve always wanted one.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 29/09/2024 22:30

It wouldn't put me off, I'd see it as a positive. I bloody love Japanese baths!

emsyj37 · 29/09/2024 22:34

I would love one, and nearly got one when we fitted our new bathroom - in the end we extended and got a full size separate bath. I had my eye on an Omnitub - they will custom make in any size and colour, they look amazing. Im sad I didn't get one!

GreatNorthBun · 29/09/2024 22:37

I love mine, but be warned, it gets a lot of stick. Not from people who have tried it - they are all converted - but it gets a bit boring tbh after a while. I wasn't intending to buy a conversation piece. I've become slightly grumpy about being prodded into defending my bath, which I'm not forcing on the world, I promise.

For some reason people have big feelings about little baths!

ivykaty44 · 29/09/2024 22:39

My dd has just done something similar, for style rather than space

Why is it better than a normal bath? (Just curious)

steppingout · 29/09/2024 22:50

We got the 1500x800 Omnitub which meant we had to put a shower over it and no regrets at all (to be fair we're all quite tall!). You can really have a proper soak in it because of the depth - I didn't think we'd have space for a bath that felt worth having. I can float in it! And the width means it feels fine for showering in, not cramped at all.

Because it's really deep, so you sit in it up to your shoulders/neck!

I did not know that! Sounds nice. Thank you for answering!

rumblegrumble · 29/09/2024 23:29

They do look tempting, though I think I'd prefer one that I can have my legs out straight - I was contemplating the standard size super-deep bath, but it looks so straight up and down that I'm not sure it would be comfortable. Don't think it would put me off though as I could presumably always change it if I really hated it.

Cello60 · 29/09/2024 23:37

Love them too - definitely getting one for my new bathroom

minipie · 30/09/2024 10:45

I have to admit I’d prefer a really big shower, because I don’t bath much.

Buyers with small kids or planning them might be put off because you can’t really bathe a baby or toddler in a deep bath (I presume?)

But I’m a firm believer that you should do what suits you with your home rather than deciding based on resale..

How do you read in them?

toycat · 30/09/2024 10:55

We replaced our shower years ago with a Japanese style deep Jacuzzi bath, and absolutely love it. Our bath is tiny - 2.5m x just over 1m, to fit toilet, bath/shower and sink, so it works really well. No issues bathing kid. We did install a handrail as it is a deep step down 😁 If you had more space, you could add a step

Butterflyfern · 30/09/2024 10:58

GettingStuffed · 30/09/2024 10:53

How do you read in them?

You just don't fill them up quite as much as if you want to be submerged up to your neck. I've never found it to be an issue tbh

dangerrabbit · 30/09/2024 11:01

Sounds great I've always wanted one

PancakesForElephants · 30/09/2024 11:42

Fabulous, thanks everyone for your thoughts, sounds like it's a goer :). Although on reflection, I'm not sure I've actually had a go in one, just seen them in films, so now to find a hotel that will let me test drive one!

@Seainasive @GreatNorthBun @toycat do you mind sharing where you got yours from, and any design considerations other than steps and maybe a handrail? Thank you!
