Will dark blue walls become dated soon?

Wigeon · 15/09/2024 12:02

Going to be redecorating our Victorian sitting room soon - dark blue for the walls would go with the curtains and sofas, and the room has a big bay window with lots of light, and high ceilings, so it could probably take a dark colour. A friend did her sitting room dark blue with mustard accents and it looks really nice. However, am not sure if dark blue is going to look terribly dated in a couple of years and we will regret it. I don't want to redecorate in years to come before absolutely necessary!

Photo isn't my house but shows the sort of colour we're considering. Also we'd white above the picture rail and on the ceiling, like this photo.

Opinions welcome!

Honestly I think its already dated- it was very in 10 years ago.

However if you like it who cares!

Just bear in mind if you do ever want to paint over it you may need to do an additional coat of white first (have just painted the navy blue living room left behind by previous owners and it took ages)

KievLoverTwo · 15/09/2024 13:49

I tired of seeing navy kitchens a very long time ago, but that would be very expensive to replace.

Painting over a navy room wouldn’t bother me in the slightest. And for the most part, I think the colour looks pretty elegant in period homes.

Beautiful. Fashions don’t matter in a period home.

I agree. A friend has a large Edwardian hole and one room is painted orange. It just works in a way that wouldn't in a new build and still looks classy!

WhatMe123 · 15/09/2024 12:57

Having the white over the picture rail is classed as out of fashion though. Its better to take the dark up to the ceiling it will look and feel cosier

Really? I still like that look so won't be changing any time

Sourisblanche · 15/09/2024 13:53

I used this colour in one of our rooms in 2010 and I still like it! If you want it then go for it.

Whattodo1610 · 15/09/2024 13:55

I never understand this …. Surely if you like it that’s all that matters? 😵‍💫

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 15/09/2024 13:59

Dark blue and ochres are becoming the new grey. I think you are better off going with what appeals to you personally rather than fashion for your home.

waltzingparrot · 15/09/2024 14:04

It will be classic for years to come and it will look beautiful.

If that is your actual room like similar I'd do:

Mid slub terracotta
Brown and orange accents
Cream
Coloured glass vases, large 70s pendant and ornaments eg bowl in red/brown/ green 70s shades

Trust me ...

@leaderZ

Christ no. I wouldn't 'trust you' anywhere near my house.

@Wigeon if you like it, do it. If you're not thinking of selling it soon, paint it a colour you love. If you're fed up of it in a couple of years. (If you prep it properly this time. ) it's just a bit of paint & a weekend in a couple of years!!

JaninaDuszejko · 15/09/2024 14:13

If you like dark colours then go for a burgundy, colours are moving away from the clean blue/pink/green and it's going to be muddier hues of burgundy/terracotta/brown next. Personally I love blue and don't like browns so will be sticking with what I like but if you are worried about fashion then that'll be the next trend, warmer colours.

Marinel · 15/09/2024 14:21

We painted a room that colour about 5 years ago and I loved it for a while, but it really sucks the light from the room. I'd like to change it but it remains that colour because to paint over it with a lighter colour would take about 4 or 5 coats. I wish we hadn't done it...

DappledThings · 15/09/2024 14:25

No idea. But we painted our room a beautiful dark blue this year and won't be changing that for years.

Lounge needs a refresh as it was the first room we painted and the paint's quite grubby now. Currently duck egg blue, probably going to go for a dark green or red with matching wallpaper. No idea if that's in or well past it or on the way back. Who cares?

abracadabra1980 · 15/09/2024 14:26

I'm probably a couple of decades older than you. And everything dates! Look at the recent 'grey' phase. Now it looks so dated. (And yes I remember the last 'grey' phase)!

ediepop · 15/09/2024 14:31

I have to be honest, I think dark blue is already dated. I painted my sitting room Hague blue in 2016 and it's still that colour now. I keep umming and ahhing about repainting it, mostly because I'm tired of it, and lots of my neighbours seem to have also painted theirs the same.

The reason I've kept it though, is like yours, my sitting room has very high ceilings and a bay window. It's north facing so the quality of the light is blue and it's a room we mostly use in the evening, so dark blue works then. We also have a lot of antique wooden furniture which works beautifully with the blue.

I am leaning towards a complete change and painting it a deep egg yolk yellow, but can't quite bring myself to pull the trigger because the blue works so well. But, I'm bored...🤷‍♀️ And round and round I go.

I'd consider - when do you use the room? Dark colours work well at night but might seem oppressive during the day.

What direction does the room face? South facing? Almost anything will look great. North is trickier.

What do you do in the room? If it doubles as a WFH space a more energising colour might be better.

TeoaeTesting123 · 15/09/2024 14:32

John Lewis told me it's dated when I was buying curtains there this week. 🤣

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 15/09/2024 14:33

Who cares? I have a dark teal living room, not an accent wall, every wall is dark teal. Dark teal curtains shot through with gold and yellow/ochre sofas. It's amazing. I. Really don't give a toss whether it is in or out of fashion.

Mark my words 1980’s Woodchip and Magnolia will come back one day.😉

😂

SatansBobbleheadedDashboardOrnament · 15/09/2024 14:36

I bloody well hope not. My house is packed with dark shades of blues and greens.

endofthecorridoor · 15/09/2024 14:37

My house looks like you described with the white above the picture rail and big bay opposite I've used F&B Hague blue which looks different through the day sometimes quite greenish I don't think this will date as it's a classic colour in keeping with the house. I think however the more navy tones in a new house may look dated . Every single person that has visited us has commented on how much they love the colour

Chewbecca · 15/09/2024 14:38

I think the dark blue trend started about 10 years ago so it must be due to move on soon.
It's lasted longer than grey because it is more classic and suits older houses well I think.
No idea what is coming next. I do try to decorate in non fashionable F&B colours to avoid dating as I don't like redecorating too often! I have re-done 2 rooms in the same shade of paint 10 years later so really resisting current colour pressure.

motleymop · 15/09/2024 14:41

I think it's dated already, tbh. But then, does it matter if you like it.

LeavesOnTrees · 15/09/2024 14:43

If you're looking for something different, Google image original Victorian living rooms for ideas.
They were very busy with lots of wallpaper patterns but you could do a simpler version in your favourite colour.

The dark blue with mustard soft furnishings is lovely but not very original.

WhatMe123 · 15/09/2024 12:57

We have farrow and ball railings and it is really nice. Trends come and go but it's your personal preference. I'd say it's not out of fashion but if you were to follow fashion more green is more in these days but again who wants to keep changing their homes every 2 years 😬😬

I love railings! We have our refurbished dining chairs painted in this

Oooh glad to hear this as I'm sat in our grey and needing redoing living room in a similar house considering orangey options for it.

leaderZ · 15/09/2024 14:56

Yes @JaninaDuszejko I did almost suggest burgundy too.. beautiful deep jewel colour agree re palate
