Will dark blue walls become dated soon?

Going to be redecorating our Victorian sitting room soon - dark blue for the walls would go with the curtains and sofas, and the room has a big bay window with lots of light, and high ceilings, so it could probably take a dark colour. A friend did her sitting room dark blue with mustard accents and it looks really nice. However, am not sure if dark blue is going to look terribly dated in a couple of years and we will regret it. I don't want to redecorate in years to come before absolutely necessary!

Who cares? If you like it, do it. It's only paint, if you change your mind in a couple of years, paint over it.

If it looks nice then it looks nice IMO. I'm not sure you can really go wrong with dark greyish blues as long as it's a light room.

Unless you're planning on selling soon, I wouldn't consider what other people might think of the decor.

I really like it, if you do too, who cares what's "in fashion"...

I would also add, that just because your friend has done it and you like ot, it doesn't mean you should copy it. Be sure it's your style and then you won't be in a rush to change it.

I think it's quite a classical look. Lots of bold colours go with dark blue too so if you went for mustard and got bored of it then emerald green or a bright pink would work as well.
We have alcoves either side of our fireplace and I painted just the back walls dark blue.

Everything dates, but something like paint will probably need freshening up and redoing before it dates anyway.

It doesn’t matter if it dates….everything dates……but if you like it it’s fine…..we still have one room that is grey , and I love it….don’t care if it’s ‘dated’

Well I KNOW that I shouldn't really care about things dating, but they do date!! I guess everything dates eventually.

We were thinking of dark blue before the friend did her sitting room that way, so now it would look like we were copying her when actually we wouldn't be! The friend wouldn't care a jot either way though, she's a nice and straightforward kinda person.

We actually made an appointment with a John Lewis interior design person, which you can do for free, cos we were a bit paralysed by indecision. Got one of the curtain fabrics she recommended and she also recommended the blue walls. But now having Doubts, now that the decorator is booked!

I like it, but I think if you care about décor being in fashion then it’s probably on the way out. My younger and more stylish neighbours were decorating in navy during the pandemic, so I would say it was now old hat.

Everything dates but paint needs redoing every few years.

We have farrow and ball railings and it is really nice. Trends come and go but it's your personal preference. I'd say it's not out of fashion but if you were to follow fashion more green is more in these days but again who wants to keep changing their homes every 2 years 😬😬

Yeh it's v 2018-2020 along with light grey
2020-2022 was dark green with sludge pink
2022-now seems to be pastels green blue yellow pink

Having the white over the picture rail is classed as out of fashion though. Its better to take the dark up to the ceiling it will look and feel cosier

If that is your actual room like similar I'd do:

Mid slub terracotta
Brown and orange accents
Cream
Coloured glass vases, large 70s pendant and ornaments eg bowl in red/brown/ green 70s shades

Absolutely... dark blue walls/kitchens, black grouting with white tiles and rich green subway tiles are going to be the new 'dated trends' that replace the 'landlord' grey and white everything, live, laugh, love, silver crushed velvet, mirrored furniture and wallpapered feature wall.

Its how trends work the all light white, silver, grey is 'tacky' now so its swung wildly the other way to rich colourful darks. By the 2030/40s people will be going 'god it got one of those dingy dark dated blue kitchens and green bathrooms.

It was teetering on Sage green being the new trend earlier this decade to replace grey but that one seems to have bottled it really quick and is pretty much out already as a trend replaced by the dark trend.

Are you having doubts about the colour dating? Or about the colour in General?

if you are having doubts about the colour dating then probably go for something else as it’s been around a while

That picture looks very similar to my living room - victorian terrace, big windows
It's a through lounge so in the dining room part its reversed. Just blue on the chimney breast wall and above the picture rail. Sofa, curtains and carpet all neutral.
It's been the same since I first did it 25 years ago. I've never tired of it. I don't know if it was in fashion in 2000, has gone out of fashion or is back in fashion
The room can take the colour and I like it.
My bedroom is aubergine

Unless you're selling up soon, I'd say have what colours you like.
I liked Dark Academia and Gothic before they became named as styles, and even after they fall out of fashion, I will be keeping it.

Re dark blue, I have one of those bedrooms in my house that functions as an inner hallway, and was a fairly useless space. People have to go through it to get to the loo.
So I have colourwashed it all in dark blue, ceiling too, with stained floorboards, red curtains and a red Persian style rug. I have wall to ceiling kallax units, also dark blue, with books, magazine folders and some red boxes. A red leather tub chair in one corner and a big red lamp makes it a reading nook.
I'm really pleased with it and won't be redecorating for, ooh hundreds of years.

Mark my words 1980’s Woodchip and Magnolia will come back one day.😉

We decorated our old bedroom in navy in 2020 and it was already an established trend then. It does seem to have overtaken the grey on Instagram, so yes it will probably look dated but if you like it, go for it. Find your own style that makes you happy and go with that, it won’t ever look dated because it’s based on you rather than a trend.

My Edwardian hallway is painted in dark blue.

People always compliment me on it.

I care not a jot what is in fashion when it comes to decorating my house.

Good taste never goes out of style unlike feature walls and greige everywhere.
