Loaf sofa so uncomfy! Where else should I look for stylish but supportive?

We saved for years for a loaf sofa and I feel really silly because it’s honestly so uncomfortable to watch TV on, breastfeed or snuggle with kids. You end up in this almost lying down position all the time. We watch TV with cushions propped up behind our neck. I’ve been looking online at sofas that have a slightly higher back and less depth to the seat but some of them seem a bit old-fashioned.

Where are your go-to places for trendy, well-made sofas that you can actually sit and relax on?

That's really disappointing for you! I watch the adverts and thought they looked so comfy that I'd like one.

Ours (which is old now) was from DFS - I really liked the fact that I went and sat on lots and lots of sofas to find out WHAT was comfortable, having bought one online before which looked great and was really uncomfy. I decided I needed to try them out.

My most favourite sofa I've ever had was from SCS before they went downhill. I've seen some very comfy ones in oak furniture land.
I would just hit up every sofa shop you can find and sit on anything you like the look of.

LittleBelleBelle · 02/09/2024 19:38

My 25 year old M&S sofa is still very comfortable. And still in great condition.

Luckingfovely · 02/09/2024 19:52

I just want to say that I feel your pain. I've said it on so many threads in here.

I was so excited to get my huge Loaf sofa.

Love turned to hate very quickly.

Impossible to keep it looking good with kids and pets.

Impossible to sit on with a normal human body.

I'm not sure I've ever been as disappointed with anything! I dream of taking a chainsaw to it.

Meditationgame · 02/09/2024 20:12

I love my DFS sofa, best one I've ever owned.

PurpleFlower1983 · 02/09/2024 20:15

Ours are from Barker & Stonehouse and they’re fab!

Yes- my friend has these and they are amazing- they're also a pretty good price for the quality

hideawayforever · 02/09/2024 20:34

M&S too, 10 years old, still really comfortable

petitdonkey · 02/09/2024 20:36

Sofa.com are just lovely- they have showrooms but not many if you are able to get to one.
loaf are awful- squishy yet hard as nails all at once!

sellotape12 · 02/09/2024 21:49

@Luckingfovely I feel you! I have such buyer’s remorse. They hook you in because it feels like a bed, but 9 out of 10 times you’re trying to just watch telly, not recline into a nap. My neck really hurts.

I could have written this post! We ended up getting rid of our Loaf sofa after about 3 years because it totally did my back in and we spent all our time trying (and failing) to sit upright on it.

We’ve since bought a much more comfortable sofa from M&S with a nice high back. It doesn’t look quite as nice but it’s also not giving me massive back pain! I really like you can choose the firmness of the cushions with M&S sofas so you don’t end up slumped and the price seems reasonable for the quality

sellotape12 · 03/09/2024 07:44

thanks everyone, shame M&S no longer does sofas. Just went to their website and they’ve stopped making big furniture. Will check out some of the other ideas.

Just a word of warning, take a look at Sofa.coms trustpilot reviews before ordering from them. I like our sofa from them but others have been led on a merry dance and the seat cushions on ours have been totally different to the one we tried in store. Overall a bit of a let down.
M&S sofas seem pretty decent. Would recommend.

ThereWeAreThenNoPunIntended · 03/09/2024 07:48

Best sofas I've ever bought were ikea.

amyboo · 03/09/2024 08:14

I second the Ikea suggestion. We're on our 2nd Ikea sofa (first one lasted 15 years), and it's dead comfy, wearing well, didn't cost the earth....

Slowbrow · 03/09/2024 08:25

I know exactly what you mean OP! I HATE sofas that don't have a big enough back. I'm really happy with our Costello sofa from sofa.com. It is still not the highest back (so do still use a cushion as well) but I find it otherwise v comfy and personally think it is quite stylish. We have it in navy smart velvet and the matching ottoman too.

Wow I didn't know this.
Always lust over the sofas as I walk through the store.

MissKittyFantastico84 · 03/09/2024 08:37

I'm so glad we were able to visit the Loaf showroom and discover for ourselves how bloody uncomfortable they are! The salesperson followed us round as we sat on loads of sofas and awkwardly agreed they weren't 'quite' right.

piscofrisco · 03/09/2024 08:46

We have the exact same issue op. I loathe our loaf sofa. Unless you pummel the cushions up every hour (which is no mean feat because they weigh a tonne), it just becomes lumpen and uncomfortable.

My previous most comfy sofa was from
next and another from m and s. Which is where I will be going back to next time!

doneandone · 03/09/2024 08:59

My friend has one, I find it really uncomfortable, you seem to sit on top of it and not sink in to it (if that makes sense!).
I would never buy a sofa I couldn't sit on first to try out as I really noticed when we last went sofa shopping about 4 years ago, I saw so many lovely sofas that looked so comfy, but was really disappointed once I sat on them.
We have a joules patterdale. It is amazing! Very deep and you really sink in to it!

GravitasShortfall · 03/09/2024 09:02

We’ve had great ones from Next, but our last one was from the Sofa Design Studio. Amazing. So comfortable and supportive.

Waspie · 03/09/2024 09:33

We have a Loaf sofa (called Bumper if I recall correctly) and I loathe it. It's known as the "Loathe" sofa, rather than the "Loaf" sofa in our family.

We have had it totally restuffed so that the cushions retain some shape and support, and put new legs on to pick it off of the floor a bit. It's much better now.

The best sofas I've had have been from Sofa Warehouse but I think they don't exist anymore, unfortunately.

Waspie · 03/09/2024 09:43

not Sofa Warehouse, Sofa Workshop - sorry!

I've got a Charlotte from John Lewis and that is nice to sit on - not as deep as the Loathe, but (for me at least) a better sitting position.

BrigadierEtienneGerard · 03/09/2024 10:35

You can have stylish and trendy or comfortable.

The two seldom go together.

IlovePond · 03/09/2024 12:07

Hi, I feel your disappointment. My DS also had a bad experience with Loaf. They look pretty, but…

We spent months looking for a new sofa, finally going for a leather one from Barker & Stonehouse. Took me two minutes of sitting in it to realise it was much saggier than the one in store and stupendously uncomfortable. One side was far worse than the other. It also started puddling within two days.

I contacted B&S and they sent out an independent company to investigate. They said it was faulty and recommended we refused a repair, so we did.

After a bit of arguing, B&S agreed a full refund and collected it about a month later. I have never been so relieved- it was SO expensive and would have been a costly mistake.

It also stunk to high heaven of an awful chemical smell that gave everyone headaches - this did not fade during the whole time we had it, (about two months).

Having said that, I would still recommend B&S. I was impressed that they used an independent company for fault complaints and that it was - relatively - painless to get a refund.

Having been burnt once, we went to the other extreme and got a shop floor clearance sofa from Furniture Village a couple of months ago. Ok, we’ve just realised it seems to have a support missing in the middle, (so we’ve shoved a book under it 🤣), and it has a tendency to creak if people bang down on it, but it’s comfy, looks good and cost £600 including delivery. So far, pretty pleased with it.

I recommend looking for shop floor clearances as you can get some really good bargains, but of course, it’s a bit of a risk.

If you’re up north, there’s a bespoke-ish reasonably priced sofa company called James and Rose:

They do deliver n/w but if you are near Preston, you can visit their factory and sit on the various designs.
