Think I have PTSD from the property market

Firstly, light hearted, Not meaning to be offensive or flippant with use of PTSD

however, we have had a hideous time trying to upsize over the last 5 years. It’s just been awful and so stressful.

had 5 houses fall through. 4 due to the vendors pulling out for various reasons (ranging from changing their minds, to reading they don’t actually own the garden they were trying to sell etc), the other we lost our buyer far down the line. Had a hideous time trying to sell our house as unfortunately it’s now surrounded by building development that’s dragging on and has massively reduced our property value (was fields before)

it’s just been awful. We’ve lost a far amount of money as our house has dropped in value whilst the ones we are trying to buy have skyrocketed

house prices now 100+% plus MORE expensive than they were when we started. (Eg in 2017 house would have been £400 now £900 k)

we need to upsize and a reasonably priced and sized property that I like has come up within budget. I just don’t know if I can face it all again.

I feel your pain OP, having moved house many times. It's a very stressful time. I don't have any helpful advice I'm afraid, just wanted to give you some sympathy.

KievLoverTwo · 29/08/2024 20:50

Omg, this is rough. I am so sorry. Surely - surely it would be cheaper for you to extend your existing house at this point?

Wtf happened to the ones you wanted to buy, did they get gilded in gold?

We are three springs down and three houses purchases having fallen through. Our biggest problem is the quality of what’s been on the market since prices started to spike in 21.

There's not much point in saying you're not being offensive or flippant about using the term PTSD when you are being flippant and offensive using it. Just FYI.

lololulu · 29/08/2024 20:55

You lost me at the PTSD part.

Wentie · 29/08/2024 20:55

Thanks. A large part of it is the market
locally, we are in a real bubble (naice rural village holiday spot) and the prices have just gone crazy over the last 5 years (a little pre covid but then shot up).

It makes me feel sick. I genuinely have a stress reaction and anxiety as I feel
like I’ve made a terrible financial mistake. Like I’ve literally thrown hundreds of thousands away. I cannot stress enough just the absolutely ludicrously offensive price jumps that for some unlknown reason we haven’t benefitted from. I’m talking £250-300k. Many of our friends have benefitted from this and we haven’t . I feel so guilty , like I’ve lost the money gambling or something else stupid.

It's shit and we all need to push for a fairer property sell/buy process in England.

Echolight · 29/08/2024 21:00

Let's hope you never suffer from PTSD as a result of something truly horrendous. Your flippant use of this serious and debilitating condition which ruins people's lives is unacceptable. To use PTSD lightly. It's offensive. Your house sales falling through is insignificant compared to the severity of proper PTSD. It is not a joke even light-heartedly. It's offensive. So what your house sales fell through. It's not a big deal.

Wentie · 29/08/2024 21:00

@lololulu and @MsWoolf I do actually have a diagnosis of PTSD (from traumatic birth and nearly dying.) I also, rightly or wrongly, am having physical anxiety symptoms and rumination over the state of the property market where we are because I feel like I’ve effectively “lost” hundreds of thousands, and the amount of stress trying to move has caused. Think lying awake at night, arguments with husband etc

OP posts:
Echolight · 29/08/2024 21:02

@ Wentie. How convenient to slot that in.

MsWoolf · 29/08/2024 21:03

You literally said "light-hearted"... Having a previous diagnosis doesn't mean you get to say offensive things without being held accountable. And anxiety symptoms are not the same as PTSD, as I'm sure you are aware.

Wentie · 29/08/2024 21:03

@Echolight huh?

OP posts:
Wentie · 29/08/2024 21:05

Ok. I apologise for any hurt feelings. I really was just trying to talk about the property market and the stress of moving. Apologies.

Echolight · 29/08/2024 21:07

@Wentie you coming in with a diagnosis of PTSD. I am sure if you were treated for it...you wouldn't be joking about it.

Dolliesdisasterousdayout · 29/08/2024 21:08

Might be worth asking mumsnet to change your title because no matter how ‘light hearted’ you think you are being (especially with the sudden realisation that you actually do in fact have ptsd) it’s rude.

Wentie · 29/08/2024 21:09

@Echolight People deal with things and approach things differently. I’ve had EMDR,and trauma rewind therapy. didn’t find it that helpful. 🤷‍♀️

OP posts:
Wentie · 29/08/2024 21:10

@Dolliesdisasterousdayout how do I do that? Sorry I don’t know how

OP posts:
Changingname1988 · 29/08/2024 21:10

Going through 5 failed moves sounds appalling OP. In my experience, these things have a hugely detrimental effect on mental health and can even cause knock on damage to physical health due to poor mental state. There is a reason moving house is always listed so high up lists of stressful situations and failing to move house is so so much worse, the stress just repeating and not getting anywhere. Left where you were, but poorer and in worse shape. It affected sleep, mood, capacity for enjoyment, relationships with loved ones and work.

Bloody hell, it’s not a competition. Op has apologised and is going to change the title.

Wentie · 29/08/2024 21:15

@Echolight im not going to have a “trauma off with you. With respect, you have no idea what I have or haven’t been through. I’ve apologised and the title can be changed. This thread is in property.
