Found what might be the perfect property but….

Hi mumsnetters,

As the title states, I found a property I really like which is semi detached. The neighbouring property on the same side where the property is detached is a house conversion split in to two flats. However, when looking at their garden from the upstairs bedroom, I noticed what appears to be a very large type of outhouse taking up the whole length of their garden. So garden is out of use. I then looked on Google Earth to see what it shows and saw some additional objects in the second garden which I believe also belongs to the same landlord based on the layout of the conversion we saw. I understand it’s their garden and their property, however my concern is about any noisy type of business activity or hazardous liquids.

I would like to make enquiries with the vendor and the local council but know that this property is very likely to go during this time. Do you have any ideas what this might be? and would you make an offer? Please see the attached image looking at the red X which is the outhouse and the objects alongside which looks like bin bags.

Have you found anything out?

imagine trying to resell it, even if he’s a dream to live next to

Very true, I think I’d like it to be my forever home, but you never know, and the last thing i’d want is to be forced to put it on the market due to noise disturbance for whatever that thing is and then have issues selling it. I also don’t want to move in to start a string of complaints, if it were to be something of a nuisance.

You're kidding yourself- wake up.

The way the rubbish is bagged up looks like industrial waste of some kind. Regardless of whether there is planning permission, I’d bet money on a business being run from the outbuilding, and one that’s detrimental to the neighbourhood. If this property was a lot nicer than anything else you’ve seen, that’s probably why.

Agree! I’m thinking a business for sure.

It's a no from me without the snooping. 2 rentals next door with the high probability of that building also being used as an illegal dwelling means that the owner is likely to be someone who doesn't care about the property or area. It may be why the property you like is on the market.

Yes so many of the issues you highlight shares my own concerns. I think the LL also owns the house with the bins. That’s a rental also in total about 4 rentals.

I remember the MNer with the neighbours who built a “gym” in their garden, but it was actually full of people living in it. Council were being very slow to do anything about it. I wouldn’t touch this house.

Thank you. How selfish some people can be and the LA can be very slow with complaints.

I know how you feel about potentially missing out as we've all been there in one way or another but this isn't a nice Sézane dress on eBay- if it goes, it goes. You have to be sure.

Thank you. You are so right. Houses can be done up sometimes to compensate as a distraction for other issues. This might be the case here!

There's not a chance that building in the garden has planning permission.

No. Do not buy this property. Avoid.

This was my thoughts @GargoylesofBeelzebub Thanks for your advise.

I don’t think it’s food waste but do you mean just as a hiding place? @LadyTiredWinterBottom2

I’ve sent an enquiry to the vendors and going to resume with some research today. Would I need the door number of the neighbouring property? @SuperSange

Well this thread is infuriating for nosey Parker’s such as myself!!

Gently pushes OP towards a computer to search for the answer to their question

You just search by street name. Or parish.

IKR? Not even five minutes.

DeliciousApples · 25/08/2024 09:03

I'm so nosey that I'd be round at any of the neighbours doors even those across the back telling them I'm thinking of buying in the area and wonder what's going on in that garden.

Unless of course it's a dodgy area in which case I'd not bother or be accompanied by a large dog!

I've done it before when buying a flat. Knocked the neighbours door to see us the close is nice or if there is any bother etc. She was honest and confirmed what I thought anyway so I didn't proceed.

BitOutOfPractice · 25/08/2024 09:06

What an odd thread. Why would you meticulously answer every post abdxnot just get on with looking it up which should take 10 minutes.
