Found what might be the perfect property but….

Hi mumsnetters,

As the title states, I found a property I really like which is semi detached. The neighbouring property on the same side where the property is detached is a house conversion split in to two flats. However, when looking at their garden from the upstairs bedroom, I noticed what appears to be a very large type of outhouse taking up the whole length of their garden. So garden is out of use. I then looked on Google Earth to see what it shows and saw some additional objects in the second garden which I believe also belongs to the same landlord based on the layout of the conversion we saw. I understand it’s their garden and their property, however my concern is about any noisy type of business activity or hazardous liquids.

I would like to make enquiries with the vendor and the local council but know that this property is very likely to go during this time. Do you have any ideas what this might be? and would you make an offer? Please see the attached image looking at the red X which is the outhouse and the objects alongside which looks like bin bags.

Are there any images from different dates? It might have changed since that image was taken

Thank you, I will be checking this out.

I think you're right about the properties being owned by the same person, if you look at the house with the building there are bin bags between it and the house. I'd go for a wander around the back, they look like garages maybe and I'd also knock on the door next to the bin bags and ask about the neighbourhood.

If you'd be prepared to give the postcode Mumsnet is very good at sleuthing 🕵🏼

TheBossOfMe · 24/08/2024 20:51

The way the rubbish is bagged up looks like industrial waste of some kind. Regardless of whether there is planning permission, I’d bet money on a business being run from the outbuilding, and one that’s detrimental to the neighbourhood. If this property was a lot nicer than anything else you’ve seen, that’s probably why.

Bettyboughtabitofbitterbutter · 24/08/2024 21:07

It's a no from me without the snooping. 2 rentals next door with the high probability of that building also being used as an illegal dwelling means that the owner is likely to be someone who doesn't care about the property or area. It may be why the property you like is on the market.

Definitely a no from me. Any serious issues or problems you have once you move in have to be declared in any subsequent house sales. Whatever they are up to could make your house unsellable if there’s a problem. You’re already being put off as this thread highlights, others will be too. Maybe it’s quiet but it’s going to worry people and it looks like something commercial has been shoehorned into this small residential area imo.

Thank you. Agree! I need to be careful here. . My first thought was commercial then I thought it could be an additional sleeping space. Neither good for me. And just odd to me that it has been shoehorned into small residential garden.

Wouldn't surprise me if that's another habitable space.

Fair play to them though as they haven't built that monstrosity right upto the boundary line.

StripeyDeckchair · 24/08/2024 21:19

This woukd be a walk away from me - it's going to be 2.5-3.0 metres tall so wwill dominate & shade your garden.
Whatever its for it won't be good for you as direct neighbour

If you're determined to pursue the house then go & knock on a few doors & speak to the neighbours, especially the ones on the other side.

Very odd-looking.

Do not buy that house

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 24/08/2024 22:35

There's not a chance that building in the garden has planning permission.

No. Do not buy this property. Avoid.

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 25/08/2024 04:37

Sorry but imagine the mice with all those bags piled up.

CuriousGeorge80 · 25/08/2024 04:59

How on earth they got planning for that is beyond me!

Actually strangely enough I didn’t notice it from the garden only the upstairs bedroom and it looked like it went only slightly over the line of their fence. My dad however did notice it from the garden but I assumed through a crack or maybe his height gave advantage. I need to ask him. I certainly don’t want to compromise any sunlight.

@Poppie2023 or the building colour may have been camouflaged into the fence hence I didn’t notice at first 😂 gosh I might need a second viewing.

From bad experience, what is next door to you when you buy a house or above and below when you buy a flat is just as important as the house you are looking at.I would look elsewhere.Having good neighbours is so important-bad ones can ruin your life.Stacks of rubbish bags and a building taking up the whole garden is a no from me and may well be the reason it's on the market.

Yes I definitely notice that the bin overspill. Investigation is underway 🧐 😅

Thanks for your advise @Chrispackhamspoodle Agree, you have to consider all surrounding neighbours. I always snoop the front and back gardens to how it’s maintained. Thank you for your advise

You should see it in person LOL. It’s huge. Only good thing is that I didn’t notice it from the garden. I’ll keep
you posted if I find out more.
