Dream home or good home?

So, last week we put an offer on a house we really like and is 15 minutes away from work. But our dream house has come up for sale, however it is 35 minutes away from work (with no traffic).

The dream house does need a lot of work but it is currently listed at £100,000 less than what we offered on the first house. Our offer hasn't yet been accepted on the first house, but it is looking hopeful from the estate agents reaction.

So what do we do? My husband thinks I'm being ridiculous, and we should just go for the first house as it's so close to work and that is the main reason we are moving (we're currently 50 minutes away from work without traffic, most days it's an hour). But I can't shake the feeling that this is our only chance to buy our dream home and I'll regret it if we don't at least try.

Any thoughts? What would you do?

You say "our dream home" but your husband doesn't want to buy it so it sounds doubtful that it is his dream home.

In what ways could it be considered better than the house you have put an offer on?

It isn't actually your dream home if if's not in the ideal location. It's a really good house with location as the compromise. Don't fixate on a "dream", just weigh up the pros and cons.

I’d go with the house closer to work that doesn’t need a new roof.

I agree with the other posters that it’s not a dream house cos it’s not in your preferred agreed location.

I'd be wary of buying a house that needs a new roof, this could well cause other problems in the house.

Also it sounds like your dream home not your DH's.

Sometimes you need a compromise.

Location is more important for me and it sounds like when you factor in the work to be done, the dream house would end up being more expensive.

Also who know what other problems the roof and other works could throw up? Sounds like lots of stress to me.

Thanks all, after doing more research on the house last night my husband has agreed that it is only 5 minutes further than agree but still much closer than we currently are.

For those concerned about the roof, both properties actually need roof works as they're both 200+ year old cottages. The time has come where house 2 (dream house) needs completely re-thatching, compared to house 1 which only needs areas repairing. Because of the era of house were buying, we are expecting to do work so this isn't a huge concern.

House 2 is much more secluded and private, and not on a main road (which house 1 is). It's a storybook cottage and not many of them even exist let alone come on the market.
