These is a distinct smell of rotting cabbage in our kitchen/dining room.

I've stuck my head in all cupboards, the fridge, the dishwasher and the washing machine but cannot find where it is coming from!

How on earth do we find the source??

My nan had a chicken fillet fall between the freezer and a cabinet once! 😩

Do you have toddlers or pets which might have hidden food somewhere? Can you open the very base of your cabinets to see if there is anything dead on the floor underneath?

MrsMoastyToasty · 03/08/2024 17:05

Strange things that have caused smells in our house inclde:
Bird had died and fallen down the chimney.
Sticky fingers had marked the underside of a table with yoghurt.
Drainage hole in fridge was blocked.

spiderplant56 · 03/08/2024 17:07

We have an 8 year old and 2 pets.

I wouldn't mind pulling things a part if I could atleast follow the smell in any sort of direction. But I can't.
You can smell in when you walk in the kitchen door but more then 2 sniffs and it's like my nose has got to use it!
We just came home from being out and could smell in when we walked in the front door but then it just kind of disperses

My friend house smelled of silage. Turned out to be the drip tray in the fridge.

Soonenough · 03/08/2024 17:17

Could be stagnant water spill somewhere. Check around the sink area cupboard. Under bin in case a potato is lying around. Terrible smell off them.

ODFOx · 03/08/2024 17:22

Is there a Camembert in your fridge?
If so, eat it. The smell will be gone by tomorrow.
9/10 evil and unidentifiable smells are from the fridge or the vegetable rack. (Worst smell I ever solved was a rotten potato).

jostart · 03/08/2024 17:25

Check your house plants! Is there water sitting on one of the pots or is soil rotting? I had this with a plant once, smelt of sewage.

Yes, I once spilled cream inside the fridge without realising some of it had trickled through into the tray. It smelled like vomit in my kitchen for a few days until I sniffed out the source.

tishtishboom · 03/08/2024 17:35

Microwave?

MamasitaGringita · 03/08/2024 17:55

It'll be a potato 🥔

Nocturna · 03/08/2024 17:56

Clean the drip tray

spiderplant56 · 03/08/2024 18:01

I can't smell anything in the fridge or the cupboard where we keep potatoes.

No camembert to be eaten. No plants with stagnate water

The sink? Ours keeps getting blocked, we looked at the drainage outside and there was a disgusting build up of fat and God knows what

sugarbyebye · 03/08/2024 21:25

Last time I had this problem I found a decomposing squirrel behind the fridge. I presume one of my horrible cats was responsible.

LittleYellowCloth · 03/08/2024 21:27

Dead mouse behind one of the kick boards?

sallyanne33 · 03/08/2024 21:29

When this happened to me it was a really distinct cabbagey smell and it turned out to be a dead mouse. Agree with PP, look behind the kick boards / under the cooker. Could be under a floorboard though.

Intothevalley · 03/08/2024 21:29

Our en suite starts to smell cabbagey if it's hot and we don't run the water for a few days - I think it's when stale water builds up in the u-bend under the sink and isn't flushed out by regular use of the sink.

MrsApplepants · 03/08/2024 21:29

I agree cabbage smell = dead mouse

Poggishairtufts · 03/08/2024 21:30

Glue in a lampshade when we had too high a wattage bulb in it. Smelt like Copydex

Oh my word!!! We once had a decomposing mouse behind the fridge, courtesy of a cat, and that smelt dreadful, but a whole squirrel! 😱

CatchHimDerry · 03/08/2024 21:37

Same as @Intothevalley our En-suites get like this as not used as much

Have also had a rogue chicken fillet I found like a week later, it was grim

abracadabra1980 · 03/08/2024 21:38

Strained water left in the bottom of a pan maybe?

spiderplant56 · 03/08/2024 21:51

I did think something dead... totally possible... but we literally cannot follow the smell!
My husbands had a ready meal curry before going out so now the house stinks of that! Which I can decide if it's an improvement

Will see if it's worse again in the morning....

Yeah it was bad. I’d been away on a work trip and the stench hit me when I got home, my boyfriend didn’t notice!

I made him get rid of it. I then went away for work again and he forgot to put the bins out for collection. So when I got back, the bin was full of maggots. Even worse than dead squirrel!

justrecognisedmyneighbouronhere · 03/08/2024 22:28

Drains, kitchen sink, washer drawer, tumble fryer filter. 🙈
