Appliance garage- built in microwave?

ChillinwiththeVillains · 30/07/2024 15:28

I am having a debate with my builder. I want my microwave tucked away in a cupboard behind doors which I would open to use microwave. I think I will need a built in microwave, he says not. Surely I risk overheating otherwise? Toaster also going in there but on a pull out shelf. Don't fancy that for microwave. The rest of the appliances will all just be stored in there but taken out to use.
Grateful for any advice. Thank you.

whatever your builder says about safety

i would follow

persistentyes · 30/07/2024 15:34

so to use your microwave you’d have to have the cupboard door wide open?

and the cupboard would need to be wide as needs space either side

persistentyes · 30/07/2024 15:35

toaster in pull out shelf? i can’t imagine that!

seven201 · 30/07/2024 15:38

I've got my toaster in a cupboard. I just use it where it is, but the next shelf up is not close. I don't think it matters whether a microwave is built in or not. Just leave a bit of space to the sides and plenty above and cupboard doors open..

ChillinwiththeVillains · 30/07/2024 16:40

Yes doors fold backwards and it's a 90cm wide cupboard so size will work. I'll have another chat with him as not convinced it meets safety requirements if not built in. But maybe just all the clearance will help. Keen not to set nice new kitchen on fire

What oven facilities do you have in new kitchen. We have full size oven with a smaller combi microwave/oven above - which is great

ChillinwiththeVillains · 30/07/2024 17:21

I have previously had stacked oven and microwave but keen to hide it away this time. Will also keep things like the slow cooker, air fryer etc. in appliance garage and bring out when needed. Keen to have as little on display as possible so it's mostly just white wooden cupboards, white splash back, white walls, hidden plugs etc.. Hoping it will be a calm and clean space....

We have ours in a cupboard. Always use it with the door open and lots of space around it on the shelf. Don't store anything on top of it, because it can get surprisingly hot.

ChillinwiththeVillains · 30/07/2024 17:34

@FragmentedProvision is yours a built in or free standing? Take point about it becoming hot. Thank you.

We regularly rent a holiday cottage. The first few visits the microwave was in a cupboard. The last twice it's been moved out by the owners, onto a worktop.

It's free standing.

Freestanding so air can circulate around it. Leave cupboard door open for a few minutes after using it. Your welcome. I am now going to call my cupboard where I have all my non-plumbed/built-in appliances "My Appliance Garage Dahling" 😂

ChillinwiththeVillains · 30/07/2024 17:59

Excellent thank you. Not sure “garage” sounds v aspirational but does appear to be the term kitchen designers use. Whole new world tbh.

My friend has a regular microwave in a cupboard with lots of ventilation at the back

HouseFullOfChaos · 30/07/2024 18:05

We have very little counter space so have put our microwave in a cupboard, it's a normal microwave which was on the counter in our previous house. The cupboard door opens out onto a wall so it's not in the way when it's open to use the microwave. It works really well and if I ever get a new kitchen (I can only dream!) I'd have more appliances in cupboards where they can be permanently plugged in ready to use when the door is open. It saves so much faffing needing to move them and plug them in. It also looks so tidy having them behind a door.

WhateverIdid · 30/07/2024 18:05

I didn’t think built in microwaves were hidden? I picture them as like a built in oven in a housing rather than a cupboard with the door level with the cupboard doors rather than behind them like a built in fridge.

Chasingsquirrels · 30/07/2024 18:43

My freestanding one is in a cupboard, along with an airfryer.
I also have a breadmaker in the bottom cupboard on a pull out drawer, pull out to put ingredients in and then leave it out whilst it is on.
The cupboard opens onto a wall, so it just stays open when anything is in use.

Yes think maybe I was thinking behind door= built in. Whereas we are actually using our old built in microwave in our temporary field kitchen and it certainly does look weird. Will have to admit to builder I was talking rubbish.

Ooh may ask him to make me another pull out drawer for the bread maker, that's a good shout. Didn't want anything that would make a mess- so anything kids will use to mix cakes or blend smoothies or make icecream will all be taken out and on my very wipe clean counters. But bread maker fairly tidy, hmmmm

OP please could you describe or link a pull out drawer for your toaster?

In the middle of a kitchen refit and where to keep the toaster is a problem...

So my joiner is just making one but Ikea sell them- it's just a retractable set of rollers on either side of a shelf that is narrower than the cupboard so it pulls straight out. My one will take 45kg allegedly. Not telling kids that as they will try sitting on it.

Thank you so much.. I'm wondering now if it would work in my larder pantry and might mean the toaster wouldn't need to keep coming in and out...

TizerorFizz · 30/07/2024 22:31

@ChillinwiththeVillains Why not just buy a built in one? They aren’t that expensive and look much smarter. Mine is a combi above my standard built in oven. Some little microwave tucked away doesn’t seem a great decision to me.
