Help, son wants a purple bedroom

My 4 year old son is quite adamant this is what he wants. I am a bit worried however that as he gets older he will want it changed as it could be seen to be a bit girly by his friends.

We have been looking at shades and we both like Little Greene Thai Sapphire as a slightly more masculine shade but am worried it could be too dark. What do others think?

We will use it just on one wall. Does anyone know of something similar but slightly higher in tone? I am keen to avoid lilacs.

A saturated and hot blue paint colour, Thai Sapphire adds splendour and drama to any colour scheme. Use Thai Sapphire on walls and wooden furniture in the home to make a bold statement. Coordinate this dark blue paint with a highlight of Trumpet and P...

If it wasn't a colour I wanted I'd say no and let him have accessories and curtains in the colour he wants.

Purple and terra cotta orange sounds weird but works in a mexican kind of way.

I’d just let him choose the shade of purple he wants, it’s his room. The very dark purple you shared doesn’t look like a very fun shade for a little kid.

^^ this.

I wish I had the headspace to be worrying about choosing the right shade of paint for my child's room.

My boys used to wear my pink socks (which I bought specially to try and stop them nicking my socks all the time. Grrr) and paint their toenails all kinds of colours. And they both had long hair.
Neither has had any problems with masculinity.

Just paint it again in a few years.

My son asked for a purple and green room - managed to find a nice mid green with purple accents around the room and shockingly it works and is very calming.

When did four year olds start to be able to choose home decor?

This is what I thought my 4 never asked to choose their wall colour. Did you put the idea in their head and ask them.

I can't believe people are still being so silly about 'masculine' colours for a bedroom wall. It is not 1954!

Paint it the colour he likes.

I would let him he's only small. At that age before Action Man kicked in my DS wanted dark green and tartan bed linen! His room changed many times as he grew up.

Purple is a traditionally emperial colour!

Ds1 is almost 27 it's his favourite colour.

@Thegreatgiginthesky

where did you go??

I was out for a walk today & your thread came to mind (the mind works in mysterious ways!!!) & I wondered what you'd decided?!?!

Thegreatgiginthesky · 05/08/2024 20:27

Ah sorry quick update. I went out and bought some bright purple paint. Painted 1 wall and both myself and my son decided it looked horrible. He was quite happy for me to paint it off white however I bought sone purple neon lights and fairy lights and he is really happy. The other bonus is that they come with a remote control that allows the selection of any different colour so he can easily change the effect if he decides he wants a change. The purple paint tin has been put in the garage.

Sounds like a good outcome, @Thegreatgiginthesky.
