Help, son wants a purple bedroom

Thegreatgiginthesky · 26/07/2024 13:34

My 4 year old son is quite adamant this is what he wants. I am a bit worried however that as he gets older he will want it changed as it could be seen to be a bit girly by his friends.

We have been looking at shades and we both like Little Greene Thai Sapphire as a slightly more masculine shade but am worried it could be too dark. What do others think?

We will use it just on one wall. Does anyone know of something similar but slightly higher in tone? I am keen to avoid lilacs.

Buy 'Thai Sapphire' Dark Blue Paint Online | Little Greene

A saturated and hot blue paint colour, Thai Sapphire adds splendour and drama to any colour scheme. Use Thai Sapphire on walls and wooden furniture in the home to make a bold statement. Coordinate this dark blue paint with a highlight of Trumpet and P...

Go with it... just repaint later if needed. Especially if it's just 1 wall it's not going to be a big problem.

GlasgowGal82 · 26/07/2024 16:46

I recently painted a wall in my ten year old son's bedroom a very similar colour because he wanted purple so it might take longer than you think for your boy to grow out of! It looks better than I expected (not a fan of very dark decor!), although I did get a complaint that it wasn't quite purple enough!

My 10yo DS has a mix of turquoise, purple and white in his walls, none of his friends have criticised it. I don't think all kids are as sexist as you are expecting, his class have had a phase of beenie boo teddies for both sexes and there are some boys currently wearing TS style friendship bracelets (including DS).

TammyOne · 26/07/2024 16:56

Thai Saphire is reeaally dark. I love Purpleheart, also by Little Greene. It’s a 70s vibe, would look ace with some kind of orange..

Pharticle · 26/07/2024 16:59

He’s four, let him have the colour he wants. My son loves pink which is fine, why wouldn’t it be

Blackcats7 · 26/07/2024 17:13

When did four year olds start to be able to choose home decor?

MeAgainAndAgain · 26/07/2024 17:29

There is no such thing as a ‘masculine’ colour aged 4.

There are, however, ‘colours my 4 year old likes’.

Or there’s this.

olympicsrock · 26/07/2024 17:30

I’d go neutral with loads of purple accessories

BreatheAndFocus · 26/07/2024 17:39

Eh? Are you from the 1950s?? Purple is just a colour - for everyone. Wtf is this old-fashioned, sexist crap?

If he likes purple, paint it purple 🤷‍♀️ Dulux Purple Pout is a good true purple.

I thought it was just the one room. I was wrong wasn't I.

Lolatusernamesuggestions · 26/07/2024 17:43

My ten year old wanted a dark grey room including the ceiling. I let him. I did the painting perspiring and swearing. Why? Well, it's paint and can be changed. It's a dungeon but he's happy. I wanted a black room when I was a teen and wasn't allowed. I can see why but it would have been cool living in a hole. Misses point of thread.

lightningstrikes · 26/07/2024 17:47

My son wanted purple too, we went with Thistle from Dunelm. It's a bit darker than the pics online.

HighHeelsOnCobblestones · 26/07/2024 17:49

When we moved into our new house, DS2 wanted purple for his bedroom. He was 11 at the time. He’s also colour blind so he doesn’t actually see it as purple - not that there’s anything wrong with a boy liking purple - but to his eyes it was a dark blue.

Yes my friend. You were wrong. Very very wrong.

Nosleepforthismum · 26/07/2024 17:52

Something like this might be nice OP? Purple would also really work with a space theme but it depends what he’s in to at the minute.

If he wants purple I would definitely just let him have the purple. He’s 4 and he sounds adorable ☺️

CleftChin · 26/07/2024 17:56

Let him have it. My eldest currently has a mint green and pink room - not by choice, but because that's just the colours it was when he moved into it, and he doesn't care enough to change it. He's had mates round and I don't think they even noticed.

My youngest inherited bold stripes, and to my horror, wants me to paint it all off-white (he basically picked out magnolia!) - I'll do it, but I can't believe he doesn't want something a bit more interesting (my room is turquoise, and I love it)

Wow that link. The is definitely the look I am trying to avoid.

Has anyone used Albany paints? They seem to do several shades which are slightly lighter than the Little Greene one. They also have an extra durable matt which sounds good. I am thinking one of these colours for the 1 wall.

They kept it nice though - that purple shag-pile carpet everywhere looks immaculate!

I am confused by the dining table and chairs next to a curtained off double bedroom. I hope it's a 'can't make the stairs anymore' thing, rather than a sex thing.

Ah well the chat on Reddit was that it was probably done for a relative to have as a bedroom with bathroom and a sitting area, but for a younger household would be better as a dining room. Versatile!

onanotherday · 26/07/2024 18:02

I love it and would do all walls!

It's like you read my mind!

IsaidIwouldBeStrong · 26/07/2024 18:56

Purple is amazing!! It isn't for girls!! Men wear purple tshirts, it is unisex, and always has been imo! Dark purple, proper purple! What a cool little dude your ds is!

My dcs have blue, and grey, it is boring, I want purple!

Newsenmum · 26/07/2024 18:59

I’d lighten it up. Literally any colour he has now he’ll probably want changed when he’s older anyway. Or he really won’t care. Loads of kids have their rooms whatever colour their parents had it, which will be ‘girly’. It’s a room. Also there’s nothing wrong with girly. I don’t even think a lighter purple is tbh.

I second this, get the eggshell, better quality paint than deluxe, and a beautiful purple shade.
