Would you buy a house without a downstairs toilet?

There is room to put one in ( house is a semi with plenty of room at the side ) but obviously this will cost.

The house is mine & I’m thinking of selling but just interested in your thoughts?
would it be a definite no regardless of whether there’s space to put one in ?

Yes, I have done twice. You’ve bought one too by the sounds of it 😄 we put a downstairs loo in the second one and my mum kept banging on about how life changing it would be - I literally never had a problem with only an upstairs one, potty trained 2 kids just fine. Downstairs loo is good but not a reason to not buy a house IMO.

RedToothBrush · 16/07/2024 15:03

I once lived in a house with only one toilet.

Wait no. I've lived in more than one house with only one toilet.

I survived. Lord knows how.

(I don't think the number of toilets has really factored into my thinking of living anywhere tbh.)

VeryStressedMum · 16/07/2024 15:12

I wouldn't buy it because I've had a downstairs toilet for the past 15 + years and wouldn't want to be without one.

crosstalk · 16/07/2024 15:24

Now my husband in his early Seventies, we definitely need a second loo, and yes, a downstairs one for eg visitors, especially elderly ones. Also useful if it's accessible from the garden in wet weather ....

Topseyt123 · 16/07/2024 15:38

It would put me off buying I have to say, but we have been a family of 5 and have had two toilets in the house for almost the last 30 years now. So that is what we're used to and it has been invaluable.

We have to have two toilets. One in the bathroom upstairs and one as just a toilet and wash basin downstairs.

Even if DH and I ever manage to downsize to a bungalow (which is our hope) then we will want a second toilet.

Starseeking · 16/07/2024 17:32

I live in one bought nearly 2 years ago.

I was initially going to put one in under the stairs straight away, but received an estimate of £10k due to positioning, so now planning to do it when I extend into the garden.

FrancisSeaton · 16/07/2024 17:32

Omg imagine the horror! It's not like some people don't even have a downstairs or anything....

HelpMeGetThrough · 16/07/2024 17:35

Don't have a downstairs toilet or an en-suite. Was a prerequisite of buying the place.

Can't stand the thought of it.

stayathomer · 16/07/2024 17:36

I would have before I put my back out (at the age of 38!) or before I watched my mum struggle as she got older. I think all houses should have a downstairs toilet and either a bedroom/ the possibility of converting a room into a bedroom.

LuluBlakey1 · 16/07/2024 17:39

I have bought property that didn't have one but now I do have one, I wouldn't want to be without one.

HelpMeGetThrough · 16/07/2024 17:42

if you don't have one there is a high likelyhood you only have one toilet in the house, which is toilet poverty unless you are only a single person.

Only on here would you read "toilet poverty". How very middle class.

I'm off to the toilet bank.

nottoplan · 16/07/2024 17:44

No , it’s on my essentials list , but wouldn’t be put off if there was room to put one in

BiddyPop · 16/07/2024 17:46

Yes, we did.

Our 2nd house was very similar to original new build purchase - 3 bed semi - but 20 years older so built when the fashion was no downstairs wc. So went from wc downstairs, upstairs bathroom and en suite in master to a single upstairs bathroom.

Lived with that fine for a few years as more urgent needs for cash, but extended into back Garden and squeezed in shower room with we downstairs after about 8 years.still there more than 10 years later again.

Machiavellian · 16/07/2024 18:27

Absolutely need a toilet downstairs. And a shower. Nice to have a second bathroom.

@HelpMeGetThrough why though?

Can only think it's because of more toilets to clean?

Justploddingonandon · 16/07/2024 20:13

@Pemba I did rule out a house for that reason, but it had 4 toilets! Who needs 4 toilets in a regular family sized house?

DoNotScrapeMyDataBishes · 16/07/2024 20:35

As a FTB we weren't bothered about it, but as we've moved up the ladder (and my mum's mobility has declined) it's become a more important factor and in our current home, which does have very steep challenging stairs - it's definitely needed and I don't think we'd have bought this with it being three floors, and the stairs the way they are, without a loo on each floor.

LindaDawn · 16/07/2024 21:40

Definitely would buy.

Jeannie88 · 16/07/2024 22:14

Yes if option to put one in and paying less than one with a ds toilet. X

I guess for me, it just feels weird to have a toilet in a room just off your bedroom and for most houses, a toilet just off the hallway downstairs.

Really, what is the difference between that and a bathroom? Nothing at all really, just don't like the idea of it.

I know, it's weird.

BobnLen · 17/07/2024 06:27

As there is room for one then the buyer can put one in if they want. Houses aren't always exactly what you want but as the potential to put one in is there I can't see a problem.
