Would you buy a house without a downstairs toilet?

There is room to put one in ( house is a semi with plenty of room at the side ) but obviously this will cost.

The house is mine & I’m thinking of selling but just interested in your thoughts?
would it be a definite no regardless of whether there’s space to put one in ?

As long as it has a second one, for me.

visitors, toilet training, things like sickness bugs when you all need it, getting up in the night etc.

I actually don’t like my downstairs one it’s really cold 😂 I’ll deliberately use an upstairs one where possible

RandomUsernameHere · 15/07/2024 21:13

Yes. Our current house doesn't have one. I had reservations about it, as we had one before, but it's absolutely fine. I actually don't miss having one at all.

Expo23 · 15/07/2024 21:18

As a FTB I was happy to get on the ladder. When looking at properties it is not as common as I thought it would be though. I wouldn't buy unless an exceptional property if it didn't have one now. I hate having guests traipsing upstairs and into my bathroom, or a random bedroom as they choose the wrong door. I'm also not keen on using other people's personal areas, especially when they don't have guest towels.

Clearinguptheclutter · 15/07/2024 21:22

It’s fine. If it has potential for a downstairs toilet then there’s onward selling potential.

not a biggie at all.

This is a weird response 😕.
I'm glad you had one when you needed it.

@Shudacudawuda

whsts so weird about MY post when you're busy sneering that it's 'not essential'??

AmelieTaylor · 15/07/2024 21:42

notacooldad · 15/07/2024 20:06

@AmelieTaylor
Well, for me it WAS essential thanks.

Accidents just happen. I hadn't planned to get hit by a car & be unable to get upstairs
Your situation, is not the same of the vast majority of MNers on here that simply must have a toilet because they don't know how they could cope. Your circumstances make it essential
.

@notacooldad

yeah, but my point is that you don't predict accidents (or surgery or whatever) & being able to cope on the ground floor of your house is invaluable when you suddenly need to be able to, at any age, so I'd never buy a house without a downstairs toilet or knowing 100% one could be put in (and consider plumbing, not just space)

I can use the stairs now, but still grateful for the downstairs one!!

Yes. I am nearly 60 years old and I have never lived in a house with a downstairs loo. I can't really see the need for one.

SerenityNowInsanityLater · 15/07/2024 22:05

My house is almost 120 years old and doesn’t have a downstairs toilet. I wish I’d been the owner to install one but… money.

Toilet training is a pain without a downstairs toilet and I imagine the next owner will put one in. And yes to the poster who highlighted the importance of a downstairs loo when circumstances beyond your control suddenly reduce your mobility! Been there, recovered after 6 months but I sure noticed that missing downstairs toilet. In my next home, I will install one if a downstairs toilet doesn’t exist, only because it’ll likely be the home I grow older in.
But no, OP, it wouldn’t put me off buying a house if there were no downstairs toilet.

CuriousJBJ · 15/07/2024 22:06

I wouldn't personally, as I'm disabled and struggle with the stairs at the best of times, let alone when dying for a wee, but if it was the right procedure and there was potential to put one in, it would be a consideration. Until I put one in my current home, I'd never lived anywhere with one though, and, pre disability, it never put me off.

Moonshiners · 15/07/2024 22:09

Purplecatshopaholic · 15/07/2024 20:01

I wouldn’t, no. Deal breaker for me. I always want the option of guests not going upstairs, and also it’s better for those who can’t physically do stairs. I want more than one anyway regardless of the size of property.

Edited

As a guest I hate going to a downstairs loo in case people hear me have a wee (I am a bit of a prude I know!)

berksandbeyond · 15/07/2024 22:10

When we bought our house we had more than one toilet on the essentials list.. now we have 3, I’d rather give up the ensuite than the downstairs loo! It’s so handy with guests and particularly kids visiting. Much prefer they’re not traipsing upstairs!

GentlemanJay · 15/07/2024 22:12

I lived in two houses till I was 50. Neither had a downstairs toilet.

I've turned out ok. Lol.

Trainstrike · 15/07/2024 22:15

As a family of 5 having two toilets was essential so I would agree it depends on the type of buyers you're looking to attract.

It's actually quite common around here for houses to only have one bathroom which is located downstairs rather than upstairs.

godmum56 · 15/07/2024 22:23

Emily1200 · 15/07/2024 19:58

I personally wouldn’t, one of our non-negotiables was a downstairs loo. So much easier when having guests over.

this. Also accidents do happen and commodes are horrible

wait until you break something, ping a knee or put your back out!

Toddlerteaplease · 15/07/2024 22:27

Yes. I've never had one in my life!

TheFifthTellytubby · 15/07/2024 22:28

When we were looking to buy our previous house (pre-children), while being shown around a prospective property we commented on the fact there was only one loo, to which the owner responded without a beat "yes, that can be a drawback, but we generally get around it with a bit of careful planning!"😂
(We bought the house.)

Atethehalloweenchocs · 15/07/2024 22:31

With elderly relatives and getting on myself, it was not an absolute, but definitely tipped the balance when thinking about what I was going to buy.

BellaEllaWella · 15/07/2024 22:32

No I wouldn’t - I think it’s essential in case visitors have limited mobility/ you have an accident/ young children etc. I always notice on a floor plan if a house doesn’t have one

DangerDangerHighMoisture · 15/07/2024 22:32

No.

Suzieandthemonkeyfeet · 15/07/2024 22:34

I wouldnt buy a house with out one

WearyAuldWumman · 15/07/2024 22:34

hammering · 15/07/2024 19:44

I wouldn't, but if I was a FTB buying a small terraced house I wouldn't expect a house to have a downstairs loo.

My end-terraced house didn't have one until I built an extension. Lived quite happily without one for nearly 30 yrs.

I don't know what I've done to upset you so much but I don't think I deserve this reaction. You clearly have some stuff going on so I'm sorry if my offhand chuckle at this thread offended you. My comment was light-hearted, I guess not everyone is in a light-hearted place right now.

That's literally what floor plans are for.
