Help improving kerb appeal

I have no clue what to do with the front of this house, any ideas?

I've attached images with identifying info removed and nc just in case..

I can take away the green bin but not the black one. I'm thinking maybe a lighter blind? Roman one? (there's a black Venetian but you can't see it). Maybe a little wreath for the door? If I move the bin I can plant something in that space.

I just absolutely do not know what to do it looks horrible, please help if you can.

Many thanks in advance.

Killing the weeds, scrubbing the windowsill and power washing the path will be very doable improvements. A big pot with greenery or a flowering shrub will also help.

Iliketulips · 19/06/2024 14:44

See if you can clean up stonework outside, remove weeds from front paving/drive - you can put patio cleaner down and rinse/scrub/pressure wash to brighten up as well. Might be the way the light is catching, but windows could do with a clean. Plant pots with colourful or shrubs in flower. If it's for viewing clean front door as that's the first thing a viewer will see close up, clean bins (I say this as ours attract bird poo!! and dust).

AllMyEggsInYourBasket · 19/06/2024 14:56

I really think once you've given it a good clean an a weed it will look a lot more homely.

I've had a grey door like that with a grey farm and I absolutely hated it. I painted it with Frenchic's mermaid. It was quite hard finding something that would look OK with the grey frames.

Thank you for all these replies. This is the plan I've come up with:

  • clean down and spray wet & forget
  • cut bush on left right down
  • level front bed and put down bark
  • put grey bin only on space to left of gas meter
  • plant shrub on the other side to cover pipes (photinia?)
  • linen Roman blind in window (pic)
  • replace outside light (pic)
  • eucalyptus wreath (pic)
  • possibly a ring doorbell

Does this sound ok?

Unless you were doing it to fit both bins in (so worth it for ease), personally I wouldn't cut back the bush on the left.

Greenery is never bad for kerb appeal, it usually looks nicer than just sparse brick and path.

nc1806 · 20/06/2024 09:23

Ah don't worry not right down, just to neaten it up a bit. It grows profusely especially this time of year.

I did actually try and cut the right side of it to try and fit both bins but it didn't work, that's why it looks a weird shape atm

Sounds good although I wouldn't put down bark, i would put soil. I've got a strip at the front of my house that was concrete and people threw their rubbish on it so I put soil and planted stuff on it and it looks great now.

nc1806 · 06/07/2024 12:13

Not quite finished yet, the electrician didn't turn up to change the outside light and that shrub needs to grow a bit, but, better?

that is so much better @nc1806 well done! Could you plant a nice planter with some flowers to put to the left of the door in front of the white and grey bits too - looks fab though

nc1806 · 06/07/2024 12:40

Thank you! There were a couple more plants actually but they arrived a bit dead Confused currently trying to revive them in the back garden.,I'll definitely see about some flowers if they don't survive Smile

Much better.

Roryhon · 06/07/2024 15:22

A bin store would be great but if that’s too expensive you could put a planter with trellis in front of the bins and cut the trellis to just below the window. Then lots of pots of flowers around the door/path area.

Sorry, I typically only read the first page, but it’s looking better already.

This is a scruffy wall of ours that’s jazzed up a lot with pots of cheap supermarket plants (excuse the trellis, which still isn’t attached!)

@ncnc1806 loads better! Really nice and will look fantastic when the new plant grows!

StikItToTheMan · 06/07/2024 20:11

Miles nicer op!

Glitterheart · 06/07/2024 20:18

this looks loads better! Maybe just a splash of colour to finish it off, maybe a wreath for the door?

trickyex · 06/07/2024 20:24

Just an idea, could you change your bin to the smaller size?
And either a large planter or a small round evergreen shrub to the left of the door would soften it all up.

nc1806 · 06/07/2024 21:22

I've actually bought this wreath for the door, and the plants I'm trying to revive match the colour in it. Once I've finished and the light is put up then I'll hang the wreath 🤞🏻

Can't change the bin unfortunately, they won't take any other one

Just cleaning that windowsill, the terracotta slab, and the bark and plant has made a big difference. Looks so much better .

AmelieTaylor · 07/07/2024 20:12

@nc1806

its looking great. The grey bin is fine how it like, much like all your neighbours I expect.

it looks clean & looked after. Don't over do it or it looks 'too much'.
