Quooker tap... yay or nay?

Particularly interested if you've had one for a while.. how does it perform long term?

Love the idea of no kettle on the work top but they are very £££

We've got a Qettle which is fabulous. Easy and quick to use and one less item on the worktop.

Ours has hot and cold water as well as boiling and filtered.

We live in very hard water area, so also had a water softener fitted when we installed a new kitchen. So they take up a whole cupboard between them for the 'gubbings'.

Notthatcatagain · 09/06/2024 19:22

Several of our relatives have them, great for most jobs but they make vile tea and coffee.

olderbutwiser · 09/06/2024 19:28

I've had one for over 10 years and love it, would never be without one again, and DH agrees. We are both big tea drinkers and I can't taste any difference between my quooker and anyone else's kettle.

It's been serviced just once, we could have changed the filter ourselves but it looked a bit of a faff so paid someone to do it. Soft water area.

Ours supplies the kitchen with hot water too (hot water tank two floors up) which was an added benefit - no running the hot tap for ages to get hot to the kitchen.

IntriguingFactJumble · 09/06/2024 19:41

I have always wondered how accidents are prevented with these. Children wanting cold water to drink and getting boiling water, sorta thing.

BobnLen · 09/06/2024 19:51

Yes but we don't use it for drinks as we prefer the kettle but for hot water for cooking it's handy

Boxina · 09/06/2024 20:06

HarridansOfUsAll · 09/06/2024 17:54

Not a chance. I've never owned one, but rented a house for a year with one. Bad tea and coffee if that matters to you, which it does to me, but the people who own them are often so evangelical about them, it's hard to say 'I'll only have tea if it's not made with your Quooker, because it never tastes right'. It's like denying to divinity of Jesus to the Jehovah Witnesses on your doorstep.

Plus, of course, they've got rid of their kettles....

Agreed. I had a friend with one of these and they make absolutely awful tea. I would never have one for this reason

TerfTalking · 09/06/2024 20:38

I’ve had one for 12 years, the first I had for 11 years only swapped when I changed the kitchen.

I only needed two replacement filters on the first in that time, soft water area.

Because choosing boiling water is a totally different mechanism from the tap control for hot/cold water

Houseplanter · 09/06/2024 20:39

I'm really torn now regarding the tea! We're big tea drinkers but by no means are we tea connoisseurs. We just like a brew.

Will we really know the difference?!

OP posts:
BIWI · 09/06/2024 20:39

And @Boxina ours makes perfectly good coffee - no different from when we used a kettle

Nurber · 09/06/2024 20:44

We bought a Franke one off EBay for £450. Think it must have been a repaired second. Its amazing!! Love it. Makes a cracking cuppa. Not sure what people are on about. And I am a tea connoisseur!!

Moonshine5 · 09/06/2024 20:45

Yay x 1 million

notapizzaeater · 09/06/2024 20:49

You need a tap (Franke / quooker) one that actually has the water at 100, most of the cheaper ones only do it at about 94-97 which makes a huge difference for tea 🤣

BigDahliaFan · 09/06/2024 21:13

We’ve got one, I like it, it makes good tea (I’m a tea snob). Is it worth it? Well you can buy a lot of kettles for a £1000…

I also quite miss the contemplative time while the kettle boils.

but if it broke we’d probably buy another one.

CitrineRaindropPhoenix · 09/06/2024 21:19

Yay. Had it 4 years. Needs occasional descaling but is awesome. Completely childproof (and BIL proof which is quite entertaining). We're big tea drinkers and it is absolutely fine. With coffee I leave it for 5 minutes so it doesn't scald the coffee.

Highly recommend.

Coffee is not tea though, and for tea the water needs to be nicer. I don't know why but the hot water taps make awful tea

Houseplanter · 09/06/2024 21:38

I admit the idea of a kettle free worktop is swaying me. I took our perfectly lovely kitchenaid kettle off the top earlier and immediately thought how much nicer it was with a clear surface.

OP posts:
Pfpppl · 09/06/2024 21:58

I've never seen the appeal of them. From what I understand it's basically a mini immersion heater under your sink? So you're paying to keep water permanently just under boiling point. I would rather just boil the kettle for the water I need when I need it. For 1 cup of tea it takes a minute tops. Plus I live in a very hard water area, so have to use filtered water in the kettle or tea tastes vile. I have an induction hob and can boil larger volumes of water for cooking even faster than using the kettle.

I have plenty of worktop space, so having a kettle out is no issue. And my sink unit is only 600mm wide, so I'd lose too much space I think. I guess whether it's worth it for you depends on those sorts of factors.

FishStreet · 09/06/2024 22:03

Lovethatforyouhun · 09/06/2024 18:57

Those who hated it, did you change the filters and maintain it correctly?

5 years in would highly recommend.

Yes. We were renting from friends who were in NY for a year while we house hunted, it was less than a year old, and they left us detailed instructions. The Quooker was useful enough for cooking (though tbh, I’m seldom in such a hurry I can’t boil water in a saucepan), but I bought a kettle for tea and coffee. I’m not sure I use boiling water frequently enough outside tea and coffee for it to merit having one, though. We bought an old house and will be renovating the kitchen over the last few months, but it hasn’t really occurred to us to consider one.

FIFIBEBE · 09/06/2024 22:06

I love mine but others have said they need maintaining and this is quite expensive annually (South East). The water tank size is also not insignificant and takes up valuable under sink space. I do enjoy not having a kettle on the work surface.

SlightlyJaded · 09/06/2024 22:10

Nonsense about the tea if you get a proper Quooker not another brand. Quooker is the only tap that delivers 100 degree boiling water so literally WHAT COMES OUT OF A KETTLE. I am tea-fussy and it makes perfect tea.

Three years and couldn't be without now. I love having no kettle. I love that I can also fill a pan with instantly boiling water rather than six-million hours brining it to the boil on the hob.

TizerorFizz · 09/06/2024 22:16

We have a Franke one. We like it. There’s a safety catch and you have to press the boiling tap handle down very firmly to activate it. It’s also used on a big double Belfast sink and sits at the back of it. The sink is set into a deeper section of granite work top, 800 mm deep in all. A child would need to stand on a chair to reach it. The standard tap is hot and cold. We can have filtered too. We have found no difference in our tea. We don’t drink instant coffee but absolutely no difference in coffee that we’ve noticed but we use a coffee machine. We’ve kept a kettle - just in case - in a cupboard.

IrritatedB3dM4ker · 09/06/2024 22:19

I've not got a quooker but I have a Quettle which is a UK equivalent and much cheaper. We've had it a year and absolutely love it. £750 for the stainless steel version and it looks great. Boiling water and cold filtered water.

It's one of the best parts of my new kitchen!

NcOpen · 09/06/2024 22:25

It’s definitely a yay for me - we were meant to get the Qettle but stupid me ordered a wrong item from a online website and I only realised past the return date but the shop did let me swap it for a quooker tap - we absolutely adore it! It’s been a game changer, makes brilliant teas and saves us time boiling water especially for cooking!

I definitely recommend it - Qettle is meant to be very similar and cheaper and if it wasn’t for my mistake we would have gotten that but I do love my quooker - worth the £1k I paid for

Qettle does 100°c too. I have one.
