Extortionate kitchen quote

Magnet has just quoted me £25K for my tiny kitchen of twelve units - This was their entry level model, mid-range appliances, and excludes installation. It does include a quartz worktop which is obviously bumping up the cost but still…

My mind is blown! Do people pay this much?!

My mum went to wickes for solid wood cabinets, when direct to the stone company for quartz and got a seperate fitter which saved thousands of pounds. She saved 2k on the quartz alone judt by going direct cutting out the middle person and all the margins that get added on cos everyone needs to make a profit

Tupster · 04/06/2024 23:34

Does that include the 50% off all units they are currently doing? Or is 25k the big price they headline with so they can knock loads of money off and make you feel you are getting a bargain at 15k?

Bluebellsinthewind · 04/06/2024 23:53

Have a look at DIY kitchens op. There is also a fab Facebook group for them also.

I have a small kitchen and got 15 units, maybe a few more. Plus sink etc last year for 3.5K

I went to Wren and got a free design. Then picked a kitchen with DIY kitchens and sent them over the Wren design and they designed my kitchen. Wren quoted me £25K. I seen DIY kitchens recommended on here. I will be eternally grateful for that mumsnet post, saved us a fortune.

Just to add, we are going with DIY Kitchens too after doing a lot of research (following MN recommendations). They are not the same as B&Q by the way!

did you ask for an itemised quote

scintilla87 · 05/06/2024 18:24

Thank you all for your insights, I went back to Magnet and they have reduced their fee to £12k as part of a sale they have running now. Still seems rather high.

I took the advice of a few of you and shared my Magnet design with DIY Kitchens today and they’ve quoted £8K with the cheapest appliances and their cheapest shaker style kitchen - I was really hoping for solid wood for that price but alas.

Homebase have quoted £7k although I’m not convinced that they have done a like for like so need to review that more closely.

I’m absolutely baffled at the cost, there nothing fancy in the design and it really is quite a small kitchen, although all appliances are integrated so perhaps that is pushing up the cost. Was hoping to get a better price from DIY given the amounts quoted here.

The search continues and perhaps a rethink, would love to get it down to £6k!

If I were ever to renew my kitchen I wouldn’t have integrated appliances. If they go wrong they cost a lot more to repair/replace. I spent as much on replacing my small under counter fridge as I did on my freestanding fridge freezer. I don’t mind seeing my appliances, don’t need them hidden behind doors.

The cost of wood has more than doubled in the last two years. There is a shipping crisis where ships keep getting bombed and that has pushed import prices up for manufacturers by about 40%.

I wouldn't go with a company that can just slash prices like that. Hate lack of pricing transparency.

Consider IKEA as well although not likely to get solid wood.

Oldandcobwebby · 05/06/2024 18:41

DIY kitchens quality is a world better than Homebase. They really are excellent.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 05/06/2024 18:54

A carpenter may do the units more cheaply. Mine did, but it was a few years ago.

fireplacetiles · 05/06/2024 18:59

We have been quoted 19k for ours, rip out, walls and a door removed, replastered and new kitchen fitted, all quartz worktops and full height upstands and a large island, new parquet flooring throughout. We have used the team before that are doing it and know they will work solidly for 2 weeks and do a perfect job, 3 of them plus trades- we don't feel ripped off.

Yup. They have lots of choice and lots of quality. You can also get the ready built ones, not flat pack.

Wickes do solid wood units chsck them out

toomuchlikemyusername · 05/06/2024 19:15

In our recent kitchen refurb we went with an independent stone merchant for our Quartz work surface. Was a fraction of the price quoted by the likes of Magnet and B&Q. They were located on an industrial unit in a town a few miles away. Huge range and fantastic expertise yet we would never had know to go there if another tradesperson we use hadn't told us about them.
You might be able to save some money from your budget by doing similar.

Bluebellsinthewind · 05/06/2024 19:28

Have you shopped around to see if you can buy the appliances at a lower cost online from places like AO etc.

Aposterhasnoname · 05/06/2024 19:38

We’ve been quoted 15k for ours without fitting, very similar spec to what you describe. Thought it was a good deal to be honest.

SUPerSaver721 · 05/06/2024 20:17

If your in Northern ireland I can give you the contact number of a local firm that is reasonable priced.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 05/06/2024 21:56

Magnet seem to have a 50% off sales almost continuously .... 🤔

Thepartnersdesk · 05/06/2024 22:38

Do you have things like pull outs in the cupboards?

Some of the internal fittings are more than the cupboards. Not to say that they are not worth it but useful to see where your costs are going.

Have a play on the DIY planner. Even if it's not quite your real kitchen it's useful for getting an understanding of where costs add up with things like plinths, end panels, how big (or small) the difference is between door styles etc.

You can also cost up appliances and decide if you want to go with theirs or source elsewhere.

I bought some from them as they were competitive and have been good but the built in microwave and sink were a lot cheaper in other places.

100% this. If people told companies to fuck off as soon as they use tactics like this it would soon but an end to it.

Ramona75 · 06/06/2024 07:17

£25k! Ouch. If you want to drop to 6k you may need to go for a quartz effect laminate. 1 of my friends did this an apart from the obvious edges that you see at the ends of the worktop, it looks pretty convincing.

rosesandlollipops · 06/06/2024 07:24

Have a look at DIY Kitchens (not B&Q). There's a Facebook group full of good reviews and examples. Your quote is likely to be halved with them.

rosesandlollipops · 06/06/2024 07:25

Halved to 6k that is...

Hoeboe · 06/06/2024 07:34

My kitchen is 2.5 x 2.5 m galley. We've been quoted £12k by magnet for a basic J pull white gloss. A fitter also quoted £10k(!)

We're probably going with DIY kitchens which is about £4k with appliances.
