Extortionate kitchen quote

Magnet has just quoted me £25K for my tiny kitchen of twelve units - This was their entry level model, mid-range appliances, and excludes installation. It does include a quartz worktop which is obviously bumping up the cost but still…

My mind is blown! Do people pay this much?!

It's the appliances that push the cost up. The actual cabinets don't cost much at all. Could you get a trade account and get some money knocked off?

If your in Northern ireland I can give you the contact number of a local firm that is reasonable priced.

Ohh jumping on here but in middle of having kitchen quotes and am shocked at the prices we have so far, love the look of DIY but, like so much - don't cater to Northern Ireland!! Would love to get your norn irish firm details!

We've just got our kitchen through Magnet and it was about 8k trade price which I actually thought was really good to say all the appliances were included. It's lovely too and I'm really impressed with it! We got the Luna Pebble with solid oak worktops.

Ps ignore the plastic on the units, I'm not ready to take it off yet 🤣

the solid oak looks great that's a good price, well done!

Thanks @Alicewinn, we didn't bother getting quotes from anywhere else as I was so impressed by the Magnet one. Would 100% choose them again and their customer service was fab.

That's extortionate! I reccomended DIY Kitchens. They come pre-built so easy for a fitter to fit and they are good value. We love ours!

Finesse interiors Dungannon.

We also got solid granite worktop from a company in Leeds. They delivered and fitted in north east Scotland - fab. Much nicer and cheaper than the solid surface worktop B&Q quoted

Thank you all for your insights, I went back to Magnet and they have reduced their fee to £12k as part of a sale they have running now. Still seems rather high

' sale they have running now' has been running pretty much constantly for the last 30 years at least. I don't know how they get away with it.

The kitchen that was already in our first house was a Magnet one and it seemed to be more or less the same quality as the B&Q and Ikea kitchens that we've installed in two separate houses since then, despite costing at least twice as much even after all their smoke and mirrors pricing.

Their USP seems to be 'we're more expensive so you think it's better quality and we'll pretend it should cost twice as much so you think it's a bargain', but, when compared objectively with any other kitchen chain (Ikea, DIY, Wickes, B&Q, Howdens) it fails on both counts.

The Ikea kitchen we have now is still faultless nearly 10 years after installation.

I wouldn't go with a company that can just slash prices like that. Hate lack of pricing transparency.

Consider IKEA as well although not likely to get solid wood.

That's the main reason we went with IKEA, couldn't be doing dealing with the sales tactics of the other places. At the time (10 years ago), units from IKEA cost us 2k including inbuilt fridge and dishwasher. The quote for the same design from Magnet excluding the appliances was 10k....

They kept phoning with 'limited time' deals if I signed there and then.

Our kitchen is on order with DIY. 11 units, including a couple of pull outs and a Le Mans corner, bespoke painted solid wood shaker doors, with oak worktops, £5,400. Although to be fair we did buy it during one of their, almost constant, 10% off all units sale. Our builder is fitting it as part of our renovation, so I don’t have a price for fitting.

We decided to keep our existing appliances and replace them as needed, as they’re all still in good condition and working fine. We are buying a dishwasher though, as we haven’t had one before, but are buying that separately. We’ve also sourced our own butler sink and tap. Oh and we need a new cooker hood, which we will also buy separately.

Quotes from other suppliers came in at £17,000 and £19,500 and our builder got a Howden’s quote he said he wouldn’t even bother telling us, as it was so ridiculously over-priced.

A lot depends on the type of units. Drawers cost more than cupboards, but are preferable (we have mostly drawers) interior wire fittings etc also put the price up. It’s worth having a play with their online planner. It was doing that that helped me make up my mind what we really needed vs the cost of each unit and who to go with.

Someone on the internet once said “my sole aim in life is to outlive the DFS sale.” Sounds like the same thing.

eileandubh · 07/06/2024 16:14

Our builders reckon it's all in the fitting, as much as anything.

Although one of them was a kitchen fitter by training, so I guess he would say that.
