Kitchen/diner/snug layout in extension?

If you have an open plan kitchen/diner/snug how did you decide the layout?

Debating between L shaped kitchen in the middle part with dining and seating areas at the back by sliding doors.

Or U shaped kitchen at the back with windows overlooking the garden and the dining area. Snug area in the middle bit of the house.

Any pics very welcome!

We have just finished an extension with a kitchen, Dinning area and snug.
U shape kitchen then
Dinning
area on the right and snug on the left out to the sliders. Walkway through the middle to the sliders out in the garden. So 3 distinctive zoned areas. Working really well.

I think it depends on the existing space, access points, windows etc. You want to.make sure you don't have people traipsing through the cooking area yo get to the back door, for example. Do you need a utility space/larder and so on.

I'd share a floorlan and tell us what you need, then aew what people.come up with.

For me it wax a no-brainer to put the kitchen in the darkest part. So we have the L kitchen and lounge and dinier looking out onto garden. (1 living space in the house and didn't want the light on 24/7)

I am unsure where to locate the three areas apart from I definitely want the dining to be by the sliding doors. Kitchen here as plan or swap with the snug seating area…we have a decent sized garden overlooking woodlands. I am in the kitchen a lot so thought a window out to the view would be nice (no kids yet but also useful when we do). But a lot seem to have the snug area out the back instead.

Given what you’ve said about the view I think I’d go option one. I think you’ll appreciate the view when cooking etc

LindaDawn · 30/05/2024 16:06

We have Option 2. Yours is exactly the same as ours. My hob and prep area look out onto our garden. So ours is north facing burt with west and east windows and it’s vaulted with skylights too. So the kitchen is in the darker area but it’s not dark at all. Just fishished our extension. Wish I knew how to insert my pic I have just drawn. I like the fact that the kitchen is out of the way as I have young grandchildren that I don’t want to be close to hot pans etc.

Peaceandquiet9276 · 30/05/2024 15:52

Here

This is exactly the same as ours including the utility room!

LindaDawn · 30/05/2024 16:12

Here is my very roughly drawn new kitchen, snug dinning room extension. Our sis is roughly 7 metres width and at its widest depth is 6.6metres.

Another reason for our layout is that was where the old kitchen was, but we have pushed it out into the extension by 0.8metres.

Also where our hob is we have an 0.9metres worktop which is great for plating up and serving buffets as the dinning table is just in front of it.

LindaDawn · 30/05/2024 16:19

You might want to consider where the light and sunshine comes into the room so you can see the TV ok without a glare.

Thank you! Yes I wasn’t sure if it would be more expensive having it in here in option 2 as the drainage etc/utility is the other side of the house closer in option 1 so almighty have to lay more pipes etc.

So your TV in pic 1 would be the circle you have drawn? If so then where it be plugged in?

Peaceandquiet9276 · 30/05/2024 19:39

Yes you’re right I didn’t think that through! The TV would be on the opposite wall I assume and the sofa back parallel with hallway entrance.

Edited

Can you redraw that then so I can see it? Not sure the sofa back parallel with the hallway entrance would looked the best?

LindaDawn · 30/05/2024 19:45

Option 2 like mine would looked more spacious I feel.

Seaside3 · 30/05/2024 19:46

Here are a couple of random suggestions... I hate u shaped kitchens as so much ends up as wasted space. So I'd always suggest a 'wall' of units, floor to ceiling, with things like your oven and fridge freezer built in, and an island that has a hob and sink so you can cook whilst facing out to whomever is in the room.

Looking at your plans, your utilitynlooks quite big, so I'd suggest separating it to have half pantry, half utility. On my 1st plan I thought it would be super cool.to access your pantry via a hidden access in a wall of units. You open the door to a massive cupboard with shelving in for things like rarely used appliances, spare crockery, food etc. Seems whacky, but I'm sure I saw something similar lately and it was such a cool way to keep the kitchen tidy.

P is the pantry, u is utility. Kitchen is a galley style. You could even add an island at the end facing out into room if you wanted.

Amazing pic 1 attached.

Idea 2, long stretch of units on the right wall, a massive island. Built in comfy seating and table in the left. No 'snug', but if you make your banquette cosy enough you don't need a lounge area too. Island could have seating. Move back.doors along so they open where seating is, assuming they don't already exist.

Amazing pic 2 below.

Option 2. When you come in with all your shopping bags you just want to dump them down and start unpacking not walk all the way round.

Like this. Yes tbh I’m not sure a corner sofa would fit in either places so maybe a smaller sofa and chair might be better.

We did think of a door there (not secret but they would look cool!) but thought it would be a waste of wall space. We could have a pantry style cupboard in the entrance bit to the extension along the wall.

I’ve drawn it out on the floor and I don’t actually think the space (either spaces) would be bit enough to comfortably fit an island (assuming about 2m by 1m).

I searched hidden pantry on Instagram. They're so good and I wish I could do one.
