Should we renovate bathroom?

Family of 3 - 6yo daughter here. Just moved into what could be our forever home. Bathroom and kitchen haven’t been touched for at least 10 years, if not more. We have 20k savings but DH is currently unemployed and looking for work. I’m in full time work (40hrs) on minimum wage which will increase when I qualify at the end of the summer.

we’re looking to get the bathroom fully redone (tiles everything) and have been quoted £6k for a standard which will leave us with 14k of our savings. Should we go ahead and do the bathroom? We’re both not sure but it definitely needs a spruce up and neither of us are handy. See photos below.

We thought we’d leave kitchen until we have more savings in a few years.

Any advice is much appreciated!

edit: the vanity is old and the sink has hairline cracks, there are cracks in the floor tiles.

I couldn't even begin to imagine replacing that bathroom in your position! Our bathrooms weren't new when we moved in over a decade ago and we're only just doing the en-suite now. That's with two permanently full time fairly high earners!

We've painted each one once and put new Lino/vinyl, tidied grouting in the main one, etc. I would see replacing that in your position as a massive luxury.

I think there’s also generally a benefit to waiting a bit and seeing what still bothers you in 6 months to a year. I know there’s an argument to say “ do it when you first move in or you never will” but at the same time maybe the fact you don’t prioritise it further down the line means it really didn’t need doing. There’s also a benefit to waiting to see if anything else rears its head as sometimes can combine jobs. Nothing more annoying that doing something and then realising needs to be partially ripped out to accommodate something else.

I wasn't picking on you, poster, I was trying to explain that I really do know what OCD is,am also married to a perfectionist, which is aggravating,in itself . I'm surprised a lot of posters have said your bathroom is dated,do folk actually rip out a complete bathroom, suite, tiles the lot and re do it after a few years! Now today,DH decided to clean the overflow, waste and trap under the kitchen sink. He removed cupboard door, everything from the cupboard, all the pipework, filter, and then my sink,he discovered the screws holding the sink in place were rusted, I was just going out thankfully!

There isn’t a chance in hell I would replace that bathroom if I only
had 20k savings.

if you want to regrout you’ll need to dig out the existing grout (you can hire a tool to do it)

Just do little bits as and when you can.

I think show homes and social media have really done a number on us. It’s impractical and unsustainable to expect our homes to look perfect. Homes do have the odd stain, crack etc.

I have a chip in the floor tile in front of my fridge where a dropped a jar of pickles. The rug that’s now there stops further damage and covers the chip. Win win.

You can get grout paints that work brilliantly, check them out before getting gung ho.
