Should we renovate bathroom?

Cholcis · 27/05/2024 19:45

Family of 3 - 6yo daughter here. Just moved into what could be our forever home. Bathroom and kitchen haven’t been touched for at least 10 years, if not more. We have 20k savings but DH is currently unemployed and looking for work. I’m in full time work (40hrs) on minimum wage which will increase when I qualify at the end of the summer.

we’re looking to get the bathroom fully redone (tiles everything) and have been quoted £6k for a standard which will leave us with 14k of our savings. Should we go ahead and do the bathroom? We’re both not sure but it definitely needs a spruce up and neither of us are handy. See photos below.

We thought we’d leave kitchen until we have more savings in a few years.

Any advice is much appreciated!

edit: the vanity is old and the sink has hairline cracks, there are cracks in the floor tiles.

That looks great to me. I wouldn’t. I’d wait.

AGlinnerOfHope · 27/05/2024 19:47

I mean, I don’t get the tinsel bit. Do you need a new screen?

foodtoorder · 27/05/2024 19:49

I wouldn't. It's perfectly liveable with.
If you feel it needs updating maybe change the floor and taps and general bathroom accessories. A little can go along way.

WitchyBits · 27/05/2024 19:49

I honestly don't see any issues with that bathroom. I'd spend £100 on some nice towels, a few nice houseplants and just call it job done for a few years.

That was my daughters contribution

Cracks in tiles and the vanity is about 20 years old

I wouldn't be spending 30% of my savings before my husband had found a new job.

What if you did a complete declutter/bought a standalone cupboard for the stuff that's out, get some plants for the windowsill and some matching towels.

The only bit I would be marginally tempted to update would be the vanity, but only if I could replace it with an equivalent size, bottom unit only, and then a massive mirror. Alternatively, just painting it white might do most of the work for you, or alternatively maybe a sage colour would work with the tiles.

CremeEggThief · 27/05/2024 19:54

No. I think it would be wasteful in your current financial situation.

flyinghen · 27/05/2024 20:00

I would paint the vanity, get some house plants. New screen if necessary. Job done! It looks fine to me! Crack in tile isn't urgent unless it's by the bath, in which case fill it. There's also the option to paint the tiles.

FloofyBear · 27/05/2024 20:02

No chance! It looks fine, spruce up with towels, nice mat, even pain the unit, but it's actually fine so save your money at this juncture IMO

Seaside3 · 27/05/2024 20:54

Agree with above, I should wait until your oh has a job and you have that as security. No way would I spend your buffer on something that can wait.

InTheRainOnATrain · 27/05/2024 21:05

I agree that I’d really want to redo it too but sorry to say it’d be utter madness to spend almost a third of your savings when you’re on minimum wage and DH is currently unemployed. As soon as you’re qualified and he’s back in work get planning. But right now it’s serviceable and you need the money in your savings more.

Ireolu · 27/05/2024 21:23

We moved into a house 5 yrs ago with a similar bathroom. It's remained the same.

therejustbarely · 27/05/2024 21:28

Get yourselves into a stronger financial position before spending savings.

genandtonic · 27/05/2024 21:35

Ha! I’d like to get ours done up to your standard!
you could..paint vanity and new knobs. Friend painted tiles and ‘regrouted’ they looked new. Big mirror. Maybe new light shades ? And as pps say, new towels and plant if two. Time to look on Pinterest!

Keroppi · 27/05/2024 21:36

no
Paint unit, get storage baskets, declutter, add greenery
you can even paint tiles

unsync · 27/05/2024 21:37

Unless there are leaks, I wouldn't until your financial situation is more stable.

Gazelda · 27/05/2024 21:40

I appreciate it's exciting to move into your lovely new home and want to get started on making it your own.

But you've not yet had your pay rise, and your DH isn't earning right now. I think you'd be mad to splurge such a chink of your savings until your finances are more stable.

What if the boiler broke down this winter, or the car needed a pricey fix or any number of other costly repairs?

Also £6k would be bonkers. Surely you can get a new vanity and a re-tile for less than half of that?

If you're desperate to make some changes, could you do up DD's bedroom instead? A tin of paint, some new curtains and carpet could make a huge difference for less than £500.

I'm sorry to piss on your chips. But honestly, wait a while and appreciate it when more it's done.

Seeingadistance · 27/05/2024 22:01

It looks fine to me.

Sillystrumpet · 27/05/2024 22:17

I’d not no. Wait till your husband is employed and you get your pay rise.

Persipan · 27/05/2024 22:31

I think you would be out of your minds to replace a modern, inoffensive and perfectly functional bathroom, using a significant chunk of your savings, while one of you is out of work. Sorry.

GrumpyMiddleAgedCow · 27/05/2024 22:35

If it’s just a case of it not being your taste (which I 100% get, if I’m not happy with how something looks I can’t wait to have it the way I want it) I would leave it for now because speaking from experience a “normal” renovation can open a whole expensive tin of worms which are not included in the original quote so I would wait until DH has a new job xx

sweetpickle2 · 28/05/2024 08:39

That bathroom is fine, it's just not to your taste- spending a third of your savings when one of you is out of work because it's not to your taste seems frivilous.

Get a new vanity (look on Facebook marketplace for a secondhand one), some new towels/bath mat and accessories, and stick some house plants in there. It'll make the world of difference. As it's neutral its a blank canvas.

Nannyfannybanny · 28/05/2024 08:44

I wouldn't do it, and eat into savings, until DH has a job. £6k for a total refit,am assuming you don't like in the SE, DH did our bathroom completely himself 8 years ago and it cost £5k, just for materials!

Nannyfannybanny · 28/05/2024 08:45

Live in the SE!!
