Will I regret coloured tiles?

Conventional wisdom is that bathroom tiles should be neutral and colour should come from paint or accessories that are easier and cheaper to change. Coloured tiles will date.

I understand this.

But if I choose coloured tiles that I love for the bathroom walls, what are the chances I'll regret it in a few years? Will I definitely get sick of them?

I'm not bothered about resale as we plan to live in the house we just bought for at least the next 15-20 years. (I know you can never be sure about the future but that's the plan).

Following as trying to choose bathroom tiles. Was going to go for white but then dh showed me some very beautiful coloured ones for 3x the price

Geneticsbunny · 27/04/2024 22:43

Do it. I have green tiles and very pale pink walls and I love them

steppingout · 27/04/2024 22:49

We have pink tiles - it's only been a year but I love them. I don't care if they date, we're not planning to move any time soon and I chose them because I love them not because they're on trend. They make the room feel so welcoming and warm. Neutrals just wouldn't have the same effect for me.

Puffinshop · 27/04/2024 23:20

The ones we like are a viridian green colour. Rectangular, matt. We'd not have them in the shower cubicle, just half tile the other walls.

I think they probably are 'trendy' but I don't think that's the reason I like them. Although I suppose that's what trends are, aren't they, just lots of people liking the same thing at the same time!

They're so beautiful though.

I have very neutral travertine (mosaic and tiles)in my bathroom and although the colour is not bright the bathroom looks dated. It was done 15 years ago.

Whatever decor we use it will always date.

caringcarer · 28/04/2024 10:23

I love bright floor tiles in a hall. I prefer neutral bathrooms. But that is me. You do what you love. All decor dates over time. Hard to believe but I can recall my Mum wanting that artex stuff on her sitting room ceiling many many years ago.

Puffinshop · 28/04/2024 11:33

I think it's very true that everything dates. Part of me thinks that it's a bit silly to try and stop people in the future knowing that you redecorated in a certain decade. Even if something is truly classic it'll get old and shabby eventually, won't it.

Thanks, feeling more sure of myself now. I've always loved green and I'm pretty sure I'd want it even if green wasn't a trendy colour atm.

Or am I crazy haha (picture of them from some tile shop website). They are quite dark.

This is a beautiful colour and perfect for this type of tile, very mid century modern. I would have chosen it myself, but finally went for greyish blue squares which go with grey terrazzo tiles on the floor. It’s very daring of me, because all my bathrooms have always been white. That’s a guest bathroom though, so I decided to be adventurous :)

I think blue and green and it’s variants always look nice in a bathroom with white and wood to complement them. And yes, everything will date, except for white, or white and black combinations, in my opinion. But it doesn’t matter as long as you love it!

stclair · 28/04/2024 12:32

We have recently had our en-suite done and have tiles very similar to what you are looking at done on one wall behind the basin and loo. The ones we have are lighter and matte but add a bit of interest and I also love them.

BubbleTheTea · 28/04/2024 12:38

You love the tiles (as do I) so put in what you like. At our previous house we made "safe" choices and just sighed every time I went into the room because I knew it wasn't what we wanted.

Now in this house we have said we will put in whatever we like at the time and change it later if we want to. This is our long term home. My kitchen was put in over 10 years ago, still in pristine condition but dark grey cupboard doors. I am painting the doors probably later this year. I loved it when it went in, started not liking it maybe 2 years ago but am just going to change the door colour, everything else is lovely and neutral.

Think how happy you will be every time you see those tiles. Do it.

Are you in a hard water area? If so be mindful that the matt tiles may show water marks more than a gloss tile would.... I'm the practical one!

Puffinshop · 28/04/2024 12:54

No, very soft water. I wouldn't have it in the shower cubicle anyway, just half tile round the other walls, behind the loo and the sink and the bath.

Very good point! I didn’t pay attention to the fact that my blue tiles are matt, I was so focused on the colour. I’ve realised that now when they are on a wall… Yet another reason to install a water softener (we have very hard water).

shenandoahvalley · 28/04/2024 13:04

That’s a really lovely tile! Also agree re water marks, I wouldn’t have them behind the sink personally. But a half wall around the dry walls, with bright white on the top half and bright lighting, I think they could add depth and texture. How would you lay them? Parallel per your picture? Metro? Herringbone? Also, make sure to choose your grout colour carefully!

Puffinshop · 28/04/2024 13:37

Yeah vertical parallel I think.

Your tiles look fab. We've a very small bathroom and so just went for a 'feature wall'. I love them and don't care any more about 'resale' ability. :)
Do what makes you happy and worse comes to worse you could tile over them with white tiles! :D

I fell in love with some Blue zellige tiles on Pinterest years ago. When we started renovating the house I knew I needed them. Tracked them down in the UK but they were end of line. I bought the lot there and then... Still have a few boxes of them in the garage.

Gorgeous colour.... I went for white as planning only short term at the time! ... Still here :) go with the ones you like...

RayWinstone · 28/04/2024 16:36

I have very similar tiles (although glossy, not matt). We put them in about 5 years ago and I still love them. I agree with the PP that everything dates, even if you stay very neutral. For eg, about 15 years ago, we were redoing a bathroom cheaply and wanted to replace the tired old square white tiles with similar. We were told by our tiler that they were really unfashionable and it would be much better to go for the rectangular 8 x 6 ones. Both white tiles, and very neutral, but one was dated and one wasn't. And now the tables have turned - squares are back in fashion!

I've decided that there's virtually no point worrying about whether something will date or not. It will. And we are all, consciously or not, to varying degrees, influenced by the ebb and flow of fashion and trends. So don't make a design decision based on whether you think future you will thank you or not... just go with what you love now.

EdithStourton · 28/04/2024 18:03

If you're going to be there 5 years+, choose what you like and sod fashion.

We redid our bathroom 15-ish years ago. I still love the (coloured) tiles. Ditto the kitchen (even older).

ClonedSquare · 28/04/2024 18:17

We have coloured tiles in our bathrooms and I don't regret them at all. We have the Ca Pietra Lilypad ones that were very popular at the time and even though they're "dated" in terms of not being on trend anymore, I still love them. My only regret is that we're moving and they're marmite for buyers but if we were staying forever I wouldn't have gone off them at all.

Redfizz · 28/04/2024 19:17

Go for what you love. We recently redid out ensuite and took the plunge on some colourful tiles. Thet make me smile everyday!

Choose what you like, it's your bathroom not one for some imaginary buyer.

If your bathroom is small you may want to consider using the colour as an accent though. We have a small bathroom that we needed to completely tile (no extractor fan). We used white tiles but added pencil and dado border tiles in a deep cobalt blue. I love them and the white really makes the blue pop.

Unless you’re decorating a rental property or freshening your place up ready for a sale… it’s your house, so have it your way!!
