Moving to Doncaster - Good School Areas

LeapAndGo · 15/04/2024 12:16

Hi all,

We are planning to move to Doncaster from London and to rent a 3 bedroom house.

We have 3 children and one will be needing closeby secondary school and primary and nursery that are very good and diverse for black heritage.

A good school catchment area is what we want.
We both work from home so job is not a problem.

Our budget is £1000
Which areas would you recommend?

Please share school names and postcodes too

Thank you!

Doncaster is not somewhere known for its racial diversity. Incredibly friendly and helpful in a way London is just not, but it's just not especially diverse.

Why Doncaster if you all WFH and want good schools and ethnic diversity?

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 15/04/2024 12:34

I wouldn’t move to Doncaster. There are no good schools.

Move to nearby Sheffield instead.. Multi racial area. Lots of really good schools. Green and happy city and close to country.

AnnaMagnani · 15/04/2024 12:37

Also if you are used to the level of culture, diversity and entertainment available in London, you will have a big shock arriving in Donny.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 15/04/2024 12:37

Or York.

But not Doncaster😬

Ticktapticktap · 15/04/2024 12:38

I don't think there is any such area that meets your criteria in Doncaster. In your situation I'd just have a long commute

I can tell you’re a local using ‘Dony!’

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 15/04/2024 12:50

S8 or s6 in Sheffield would be great for you.

PuttingDownRoots · 15/04/2024 12:59

Hall Cross or Hayfield catchments.

Doncaster isn't very diverse. But on the plus side... few snobs.

LeapAndGo · 15/04/2024 13:04

The house prices in Doncaster seem very attractive that’s the reason why we are considering it but it seems like Sheffield will be more favourable for our needs.
Thank you for your detailed responses!

You want Sheffield.

Good schools are out in some of the villages. But you won't find diversity in Donny.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 15/04/2024 13:16

King Edward V11 secondary in Sheffield. Massive catchment, good school, multi racial.

AnnaMagnani · 15/04/2024 13:27

The house prices reflect the demand for the area. Which is low.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 15/04/2024 13:29

Just seen something on tv about Tory mp for Doncaster endorsing voting for Reform.

Ugh. Doncaster🤮Used to be a Labour stronghold.

Noimaginationforaun · 15/04/2024 13:41

There’s a reason Doncaster has attractive house prices. I second Sheffield, if you can afford it.

Itiswhatitis80 · 15/04/2024 13:50

I'm From doncaster,a lot of people have moved from Sheffield to my village,Sheffield also has a lot more crime,it’s just a grim as doncaster,totley/dore in Sheffield are nice areas,bawtry/finningly/bessicar/edenthorpe/barnby Dunn/kirk sandall are nice villages, the later have good rail links.

LeapAndGo · 15/04/2024 13:57

What is the S2 area of Sheffield like in terms of good schools and diversity?

Personally I’d avoid S2…..

LeapAndGo · 15/04/2024 14:03

Ok, why would you avoid it?
what areas would you recommend?

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 15/04/2024 14:03

Best schools in S10,S11 and S17.

These areas are all hideously expensive.

Then s6 and 8

LeapAndGo · 15/04/2024 14:04

Thanks for the options of great areas. I’ll research about them

siameselife · 15/04/2024 14:08

There are some nice areas in Doncaster (as well as lots of pretty grim ones) but it's diversity is centered around asylum seekers and the traveling community. There is very limited diversity in the nicer villages.

DrCoconut · 15/04/2024 15:57

I imagine you will get a helluva house for £1k a month in Donny. As others have said it is not a very diverse and "cultural" place which may be a shock if you're not used to it. York or Sheffield may be less of a change but they are quite expensive places to live (though not compared to London). Don't know about schools, there is a brand new IoT at the college if you have any potential STEM students.

PuttingDownRoots · 15/04/2024 16:31

As a practical note... Doncaster schools have both fixed catchment areas and feeder schools. Fortunately the council has good maps... the closest school might not be catchment school.

lunar1 · 15/04/2024 16:36

Definitely Sheffield!

generalexpert · 15/04/2024 16:42

I grew up in Donny and can say, don't move to Donny. If you really want to, Bessacarr and onwards to Bawtry (missing Rossington) would be the way to go.

There are some lovely areas in Yorkshire, Donny isn't one of them.
