Ask for info on relative strength (will it crack if you drop a cast iron pan), response to heat (can you land a hot pan on it), stain resistance, what products can be used / shouldn’t be used for cleaning it. (My countertops are supposed to be cleaned with water only which is a bit of a joke in a kitchen)

tuliplav · 11/04/2024 15:36

what’s your sink?

I massively regret not going with ceramic!!!

My composite is an utter pig to clean and always looks dusty!!! Xx

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 11/04/2024 15:43

I have a composite sink which is part of the worktop, so a kind of Corian composite(came with the house, always staining). I replaced the stainless steel sink with a proper fire clay ceramic sink, it is easily the best of the three.

HeddaGarbled · 11/04/2024 15:46

Ceramic can’t be fitted into all worktops, so you need to make sure that they’re compatible first. If they are, I’d go ceramic because I think they look nicer. If you do go for composite, I’d advise against white, because they are the worst for looking dirty.

We went for ceramic - looks lovely but it was pricey to replace it when someone (DH) dropped a cast iron casserole dish on it. We now have a very unattractive rubber mat thing in the sink to stop this happening again - so maybe get ceramic but ditch all your heavy casserole dishes and saucepans?!

Snugmummy · 11/04/2024 18:14

Hate my white composite sink with a passion. My kitchen designer recommended it as it’s stronger than ceramic, but it’s an absolute pig to clean- I bleach it daily but it stains after literally anything is poured in it! Would def go ceramic next time!

Caspianberg · 11/04/2024 18:19

Ceramic. We have ceramic sink and ceramic worktop (dekon type). Both white so it blends seamlessly. They are really good, not a single mark of either in 2+ years.
i use sonnet ceramic powder cleaner to clean any marks left in sink.

We have a composite one in utility as it was cheaper. It’s hardly used in comparison and always has weird water marks on it

muddyford · 11/04/2024 18:19

Ceramic is better as composite stains incredibly easily. But I would have stainless steel every time.

GasPanic · 11/04/2024 18:34

IME composite stains with stuff like tea, but it is relatively easy to clean, or at least is if you don't leave it for weeks with the tea stains on it.

Ceramic probably cleans up better and is more resistant to staining, but can probably be more easily cracked and chipped.

I have had composite a year and not really managed to scratch it yet, but that is probably because I hardly use the bowls for much - mostly the dishwasher does the washing.

I do agree with this re the composite- it’s very hard wearing and I have zero scratches on mine with reasonably heavy wear as I don’t put my pans in the dishwasher, only hand wash. Still stains like a bugger tho!

Kitkat1523 · 11/04/2024 18:46

I have ceramic in the utility room and composite in kitchen

Toooldtoworry · 11/04/2024 18:47

Reading with interest as we are looking at ceramic or glass with stainless bowl.

nearlymrs · 11/04/2024 19:31

We have really hard water and the kitchen designer told us to avoid composite as the water marks and limescale would be awful.

startingagain202 · 11/04/2024 19:33

I have ceramic. Kitchen fitter moaned like buggery putting it in because it was so heavy.
I live in a hard water area and I've always preferred stainless steel - but white ceramic is so low maintenance IMO, you don't see the watermarks/splashes and it doesn't stain.
I'm a convert at the moment, but I have seen some very worn/horrid ceramic sinks, not sure if they have been mistreated or were poor quality so didn't last well?

composite with granite or plastic?!

Ooh, that I don’t know! It’s from howdens , looking at the website it doesn’t actually specify- just states composite. But if I remember the weight of it before it went in I would guess at more plastic than granite?
