Small Flat: Freezer vs Tumble Dryer

Threadcountess · 26/03/2024 20:01

Living in a small flat in a city. We either have space for a separate tumble dryer or an under counter freezer.

Otherwise we have a tiny cell freezer/ice box.

Only use a tumble dryer for bedding and towels but find it frustrating not being able to batch cook food.

Freezer. Life is so much easier.

LaviniasBigBloomers · 26/03/2024 20:03

Washer/dryer? They're not perfect but much better than they used to be. I only use mine for towels and bedding. Couldn't live without my freezer.

MichaelAndEagle · 26/03/2024 20:04

What sort of space do you have for airers etc?
I have a freezer, no dryer. In fact I've never had a dryer so don't really miss one.
There are two clothes airers as permanent fixtures in my bedroom though.

QueSyrahSyrah · 26/03/2024 20:04

A combined washer dryer? We have one and it's probably not as good as a separate dryer (and obviously can only be either washing or drying at any one time) but it does the job for bedding and towels.

Freezer and get a washer/dryer. Assuming your fridge is also an under-counter one? If not, I’d get a decent fridge-freezer and a tumble dryer.

NewFriendlyLadybird · 26/03/2024 20:19

Freezer plus washer/dryer.

LindaDawn · 26/03/2024 20:46

I would choose a freezer every time as I batch cook tons and I love my tumble dryer. Is there a lauderette nearby? Or a parent whose tumbledryer you could use on a regular basis which is what I do for my daughter.

FenellaBestwick · 26/03/2024 21:03

Everyone else'll say freezer but I'd rather have a tumble drier. I couldn't live without mine. It dries a whole wash in 50mins and I can put everything away & be done with it.

MoHunter · 26/03/2024 21:24

I'd go freezer, unless you have somewhere you could put a chest freezer?

EmpressaurusOfTheScathingTinsel · 26/03/2024 21:31

Freezer, no contest.

DiveBombingSeagull · 26/03/2024 21:34

Dryer. We ended up with bad mould from indoor drying.

Can you site a dryer somewhere else? For a while I had mine in my bedroom, it kept it lovely and cosy.

Timetotalkhaspassed · 26/03/2024 21:43

Dryer. If you get a condenser you could store it in the corner of a bedroom.

I'm with you. I use my tumble dryer all the time. I rarely use the freezer.

Washer dryer combined. They are fine for occasional use. A freezer is so much more useful.

mondaytosunday · 26/03/2024 22:36

I have a washer dryer as everyone suggests!

Copperoliverbear · 26/03/2024 23:04

Can you get a fridge with a freezer on the top, I love my dryer. X

ibelieveinmirrorballs · 27/03/2024 06:35

Get a washer/dryer but choose carefully - either a Miele or other decent brand... I had a flat pre-kids which only had space for a washer/dryer and sold my new cheapie (and utterly useless) Hotpoint one for a second hand Miele one which was AMAZING by comparison. Hotpoint one never got anything dry; Miele one was as good as separates.

Caspianberg · 27/03/2024 06:42

Freezer
Then get a washer dryer for bedding.

We have separate tumble dryer and it’s only used for bedding and towels in winter. Never dry clothes in it.

When we lived in tiny flat, our washer dryer was crap as old. We swapped our towels for large but thin hamman ones, meant we could wash on high spin and just hang straight back up in bathroom on hook to dry and they dried really quickly.

determinedtomakethiswork · 27/03/2024 06:47

How close are you to the shops and how convenient is it for you to pop in and buy food? If there's a good supermarket on your way home from work then I would go for the tumble dryer every time

Mindymomo · 27/03/2024 06:51

When I lived in a flat it was so hard getting clothes dry, working till 6pm so flat cold in the daytime, some bedding and towels actually took days to dry, so I would definitely go for a washer/dryer combined.

ShrinkingDaffodil · 27/03/2024 06:52

When I was in a small flat i used my cooker space for a fridge freezer & had a counter top hob & mini oven that fit in a cupboard when not in use. If that’s an option? I was single though so only cooking for 1!

theduchessofspork · 27/03/2024 06:53

I also have a tiny flat

Get a washer drier and a freezer - everyone is rude about washer driers on here - they aren’t optimal - but a good one is fine.

StamppotAndGravy · 27/03/2024 07:09

Freezer, then save up, take that bath out (if you've got one) and have a shower and both washing machines in a stack in the bathroom. Then you'll have room for a dishwasher too!

Ginmonkeyagain · 27/03/2024 07:23

Freezer every time. We don't have a drier but we do have a large private balcony so can dry clothes out there on an airer. If it is raining, we find a dehimdifier (Ebac ones are good as they have a clothes drying setting) is fine.

How small is your kitchen? We have a galley kitchen but managed to fit in a fridge freezer which is fine for two of us.

Rosesanddaisies1 · 27/03/2024 07:29

Definitely a freezer, will help you save money with batch cooking. I’ve never owned a dryer, they use so much electricity, I’ve never had issues drying anything.
