Malvern or Ledbury? Or any other recommendations for Cheltenham commute please.

Ideally, we'd like to be near Cheltenham (in a village), but it's just so expensive! Trying to widen the search, but we don't live in the area yet, so it's difficult to get a good feel for it on short visits. We'd like to try and keep the budget to about £750k for a detached with decent garden and off-road parking.

Eckington is a lovely village not far from Cheltenham, but the prices are not Cotswold level high

Prophetorwell · 19/03/2024 20:26

That's great to hear - we have had our eye on a couple in Eckington, so will put it firmly on the list of places to watch.

Malvern is much nicer than Ledbury IMO and has better amenities.

KaftasCastle · 19/03/2024 20:39

Malvern.

Easy to get to Cheltenham, you'll get a fabulous house for your budget, also there's a better community feel in Malvern than Ledbury.

NeedAMakeOver4 · 20/03/2024 08:59

Also yes agree you’ll get a fab house for your budget in Malvern. You could in Ledbury too but the houses just aren’t as nice, there are many more Victorian or character houses in Malvern for that price point (if that’s your thing). Also can get much nicer views in Malvern than Ledbury.

I think that I'd try to stay east of the Severn and the M5.

CMOTDibbler · 20/03/2024 10:16

Which side of Cheltenham? North or M5 side for work then Eckington or Bredon are nice if you want a full on village (both have just a corner shop, pub and Bredon has a fish and chip shop plus a doctors), or Pershore for a very small town where there are some facilities like pool, gym and coffee.
Malvern or Ledbury def aren't villages, and during flooding Malvern to Cheltenham can be a right pain

The big circular place, east of the M5 😉.

Our search did start from Pershore down toward Cheltenham, but not a lot's been coming up. We didn't love Pershore, but only had a quick walk around; think we'd definitely prefer one of the villages.

You def want to think about ease of getting on and off the motorway then, and making sure you are the right side of the river- Eckington bridge closes with tedious regularity in the winter, but the village is the right side for the motorway. Bredon, Bredons Hardwickvare good too. Upton is nice, and an easy access to the motorway due to the flood relief from the actual town, but does need careful thought about exact places.
Kemerton is worth a look if you like the Cotswold village feel, or Sedgeberrow

Prophetorwell · 20/03/2024 12:20

This is super-helpful information, CMOT - thank you!

Does anyone know Witcombe? Unfortunately, it doesn't have a pub but is nice and easy onto M5.

I know nothing about Witcombe but the internet tells me that Witcombe C.C., just across the road, was the originator of the Witcombe Festival (now relocated). I think the locals like to sip a pint or two of cider.Wink
The location is also not far from the Coopers Hill nutters cheese enthusiasts.

We should fit in nicely then as we’re partial to a nice cider.

I've lived in Dorset, so I’m used to cheese rolling nutters 😂.

Witcombe is really nice and that particular cottage you're looking at is lovely, I walk past it often.

Yes there's a cider festival and the cheese rolling once a year. There's also lovely walks, the reservoir and the woods. It's got a beefeater just down the road, the twelve bells (5 min walk) or there's the toby carvery a bit further on. It's very quiet and just a lovely place to be.

Really well connected, there's the a417 to Cirencester or m5 nearby. You can also use the shurdington road for Cheltenham, and painswick road will take you to Stroud.

senua · 03/04/2024 10:57

I did wonder, seeing the development-creep at Brockworth, if the area around you might be next but I think that you are within Cotswold AONB.
Might be an idea to check building regulations, Local Plan, etc though.

hazelnutlatte · 03/04/2024 11:20

Witcombe is nice enough but there isn't much there. It might be affected by the new A417 build (the lane from Witcombe to Birdlip gets clogged with traffic whenever there is a problem on the A417).
Lovely walking nearby (close to the Cotswold way) and Brockworth is close with a tesco etc. Once a year you'll get mobbed with all of the cheese rolling madness as it's an easy walk to Coopers Hill from the roman villa at Witcombe.
With your commute I'd say it would be much easier living in Witcombe than Malvern etc. Traffic in Cheltenham can be a nightmare so living closer would be better if you have to commute every day.
Do you specifically want a small village? If not, have you considered Churchdown? Or even the nicer parts of Gloucester? (Which isn't the hell hole that people in Cheltenham would have ypu believe).

I have been looking out for something in Churchdown but not much coming up. Can you recommend any other nice areas? I just keep being told to avoid Gloucester, so a bit scared!

The children and I would be happy with a house on its own in the middle of nowhere. DH would prefer a village (large or small) with a pub. Also don't mind a small town if it has the right feel. We viewed a house in Great Malvern and liked the area.

Have you looked at Upton St Leonards? Just outside the edge of Gloucester so pretty convenient for everything, but it has the feel of a rural village.
Gloucester City does have a bit of a bad reputation - and admittedly the city centre isnt great, but it's not all bad, you could consider somewhere like Longlevens for easy access to Cheltenham. Gloucester docks are really nice and well worth a visit, there are lots of nice restaurants and bars there and it has a very different feel to the city centre despite being right next to it.

Clettercletterthatsbetter · 04/04/2024 17:57

Definitely Malvern - we moved here just under 3 years ago and it was the best decision we’ve ever made.

If you want any intel on town, schools, etc then feel free to PM me.

MissyB1 · 04/04/2024 18:05

I like Witcombe, and it’s close to the Shurdington Rd to Cheltenham. Malvern is actually a bit of a trek if you need to commute every day. Don’t you fancy Cheltenham itself ? Or do you prefer village life? Bredon is very nice, as is Alderton.

You could also look at villages near Cirencester like Rendcomb, we spent the day in Cirencester today, it’s a nice drive back to Cheltenham on the old Cirencester Road A1435, which avoids the whole A147 roadworks nightmare.

We have seen a couple of houses come up there, but it doesn’t look like it’s easy to access the M5, even though you’re very close to it. DH wouldn’t be commuting to Cheltenham every day, but we would be heading up and down the M5 fairly regularly to visit DC.

Thankfully don’t need to worry about schools. There’s a bit of a drought in houses coming on the market in Malvern at the moment (in our price bracket anyway), so I think that’s what will determine where we go - wherever the right house appears.

The Lenches villages are lovely and there is a great sports club in Church Lench. The cricket ground has the best view of the Malvern hills in the county.
There are a lot of lovely villages just south of Droitwich with quick access to Junction 6 or 7 of the M5. And also really close to Worcester for shopping. The Worcester Waitrose has a sushi bar, a wine/ tapas bar and a good cafe and is close to Junction 7. There is also a big Tescos and Aldi that side.
Cheltenham is good for shopping but the biggest department store has closed down leaving a big hole in the town centre. John Lewis is good and lots of independent cafes.
Worcester is just a smaller version of Cheltenham.

I wouldn’t rule Cheltenham out, but I’d really like a decent garden and I just won’t get it on the budget.

I do like Bredon, but don’t know Alderton so will check that out. Something’s just come up nearby in Toddington, well under budget; do you know it? I like that it has a train station & pub.

I really like Cirencester and do look around that area, but not much in budget unfortunately.
