Northern Moor Wythenshawe?

Hi all!

Last week we found a dream house within our budget in Northern Moor, Wythenshawe but we've only lived in Manchester for around 2 months and not really know much about the area. I would really appreciate hearing your thoughts on the area and maybe some suggestions for other parts of Greater Manchester to look please? We've been looking around Sale, Urmston, Stretford.

Budget - £300k
Min 2 bedrooms, ideally 3
DH works near Trafford Centre so preferably not too far from there, maybe under 20mins drive
Ideally in catchment of good/excellent primary and secondary schools

Looking forward to your ideas, thank you.

Trafford is renowned for good schools, however the school system is completely broken because of the Grammar School system. I would strongly advise you don’t choose Trafford based on schools. Choose it for other reasons but not this.

From what I have seen of Trafford's schools - both grammar and non-grammar - the schools are very, very far from broken. All seem to out-perform similar schools in the NW.

Northenden ?

I am sure you asked this exact question a couple of months ago, @Couldnotfindusername

It’s the system that is broken. I’m a Trafford resident and I can’t get my child into any of the amazing Trafford schools due to catchment, over subscription & grammar selection.

OP you will struggle for a decent £400k house in Didsbury but that northenden one is nice and the area is ok

How is the area irlam M44? We are going to view one house over there. No idea about the area though.

sonofrageandlove · 07/10/2024 19:47

I don’t know Irlam sorry

MiddleAgedDread · 07/10/2024 20:29

Irlam is a bit “no man’s land” IMO, it’s stuck in limbo between Manchester and Warrington and sandwiched between the M62 and the ship canal with few ways out.

Didsbury is one of the nicest and most expensive parts of Manchester. No areas to avoid, just look out for ‘estate agent’ Didsbury which is actually Burnage or Withington.
East and the village centre is more family orientated and West has a younger cooler vibe

if you give us a budget that would help greatly!

M20 is Withington
I lived there 25 years

The OP said she was looking at the M20 postcode and you said make sure its Didsbury and not Withington.

New build in Gatley in budget. Plenty of thirties semis also in range. Main line station. Great road links. Near the airport but without much noise, outstanding primary. More green space than you would need. Local shops and bars etc.

Yes, same postcode, two very different kinds of places? That was my whole point 😂

Dogzillah · 07/10/2024 22:06

Manchester is all a shite hole doesn't matter which part you're in. You just have posh twats in Didsbury with their sprokadoodles and totebags all over the show.

thank you!
There are quite an options for primary school, i read that cheadle and Cheadle hulme could be good place to live for young families. There are 3 chedle, cheadle hume and cheadle heath. Which ones are the “family” oriented ones, I am seeing good houses within the range but i am not sure which cheadle and which area is worth to look for.

MiddleAgedDread · 08/10/2024 07:55

They’re all family orientated, it’s the heart of suburbia! You really need a good few days in the area, do some driving around and have a proper look at areas and maybe also schools.

Hello Everyone,

I hope you're all well. If possible, I would be so grateful for any recommendations on postcode areas with excellent schools—specifically for primary but with good grammar school options in the future. We’re also looking for a place with nearby amenities and a warm, welcoming environment.
A few things are especially important to us:

  • Strong schools for both primary and secondary education.
  • A reliable, well-regarded GP.
  • Proximity to a park, a good bookstore or library (we aren’t much for pubs).
  • A close-knit, culturally diverse community.

Thank you very much in advance for any insights you may have. Your suggestions would mean a lot to us as we try to find the right place for our family.
Warm regards,

I would make sure that you go near the border of another borough because if they don't get into grammar (don't want them to be there if you have just tutored them to high heaven as once there they will forever feel stupid) then you have many more options.
I used to live in Stretford and loved it. Brilliantly diverse, easy to get to town, lovely community, great parks and really good primary schools.
Urmston is a bit more suburban (which I hate) and a lot less diverse. Also if you fail to get into grammar school in Urmston you're only choices are religious or single sex schools which my kids would have hated.
